India made just one change to their playing eleven – Dinesh Karthik
made way for Virat Kohli. Sri Lanka made no changes to the eleven that last
played the Indians.
On winning the toss, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, India’s skipper,
chose to bat. Their openers put on 50 off 9.3 overs (57 balls). Sri Lanka hadn’t
conceded any extras at that point. While Rahul Dravid’s contribution to the
partnership was 18, the contribution of Sachin Tendulkar – the player of the
match and the player of the series – was 32.
The second Powerplay of India’s innings was between the 11th
and the 15th over. Sixteen overs into the match, the first drinks break
was taken. India had conceded 84 without the loss of a wicket at that point. While
Dravid was batting on 32, Tendulkar was batting on 50. The latter’s
half-century – which included half-a-dozen boundaries – came off 47 balls.
Dravid, whose 56-ball innings included a couple of
boundaries and a six, eventually scored 39. A hundred and four balls into the
match, he was caught by Tillakaratne Dilshan. Sanath Jayasuriya broke the 95-run
partnership.

Tendulkar, whose 133-ball innings included 10 boundaries and
a six, eventually scored 138. Fifty-seven balls later, he was trapped leg
before wicket by Ajantha Mendis, who broke the 71-run partnership.
India scored 300 off 48.2 overs (303 balls). Sri Lanka had
conceded 18 extras at that point. Yuvraj’s half-century – which included five
boundaries and a six – came off 39 balls. He eventually scored 56 off 41 balls,
which included half-a-dozen boundaries and a six. He was unbeaten.
Yusuf Pathan, who faced a ball, failed to get off the mark. Four
balls after Tendulkar’s dismissal, he was caught by Chamara Kapugedera. Thilan
Thushara broke the one-run stand.
Suresh Raina, whose six-ball innings included a boundary,
scored eight. Eleven balls later, he was caught by Nuwan Kulasekara. Thushara
broke the 25-run stand. Kohli, who faced a couple of balls, scored as many. He
was unbeaten.
Sri Lanka eventually conceded 20 extras. India scored 319
for the loss of five wickets off 50 overs. Angelo Mathews, who bowled three
overs, conceded 15. He was wicketless, as was Kulasekara, who bowled eight
overs, conceding 38. Jayasuriya, who bowled nine overs, conceded 43. He picked
up a wicket.
Malinga and Mendis bowled 10 overs each, picking up a wicket
apiece. While the former conceded 81, the latter conceded 70. Thushara, who
bowled 10 overs, conceded 71. He picked up a couple of scalps.
Sri Lanka’s openers put on 50 off 6.2 overs (39 balls). India
had conceded an extra at that point. While Dilshan’s contribution to the
partnership was 29, Jayasuriya’s contribution to it was 21. The former, whose 29-ball
innings included nine boundaries, eventually conceded 42. Forty-seven balls into
the chase, Harbhajan Singh broke the 64-run partnership.
Jayawardene, who faced five balls, scored a run. Eleven
balls (Mahe)later, he was caught by Harbhajan, who broke the 12-run stand.
The second Powerplay of Sri Lanka’s innings was between the 11th
and the 15th over. Jayasuriya, whose 29-ball innings included seven
boundaries, eventually scored 36. Eight balls after Jayawardene’s dismissal, he
was caught by Ashish Nehra. Pathan broke the nine-run stand.

Sri Lanka scored 150 off 21 overs (137 balls). India had
conceded 10 extras at that point. The sixth-wicket pair put on 50 off 59 balls.
While Sangakkara’s contribution to the partnership was 14, Kandamby’s
contribution to it was 29. The number of extras India had conceded at that
point gave them no reason to be in seventh heaven.
Sangakkara, who faced 37 balls, eventually scored 33. Sixty
balls after Mathews’ dismissal, he was dismissed hit wicket by R P Singh, who
broke the 51-run partnership.
Thirty-one overs into the match, the second drinks break was
taken. India had conceded 197 for the loss of half-a-dozen wickets at that
point. While Kandamby was batting on 38, Kapugedera had scored half-a-dozen.
Sri Lanka scored 200 off 31.2 overs (194 balls). India had

Harbhajan off his own bowling. Mendis, who faced 10 balls, had no reason to be
in seventh heaven – a dozen balls later, he was stumped off the bowling of
Harbhajan, who broke the (Dho)nine-run stand.
India eventually conceded 15 extras. Sri Lanka, who were
dismissed for 273 off 46.4 overs, lost by 46 runs. Nehra, who bowled seven
wicketless overs, conceded 43.
Pathan, who bowled four overs, conceded 36. He picked up a
wicket. R P, who bowled five overs, conceded 34. He picked up a wicket. Yuvraj,
who bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceded 24. He picked up a wicket.
Sharma, who bowled seven overs, conceded 51. He picked up a
wicket. Raina, who bowled eight overs, conceded 26. He picked up a wicket.
Harbhajan, who bowled 9.4 overs, conceded 56. He picked up five scalps.
