India win series; SL D(hon)isappointed

While India made no changes to their playing eleven, Sri Lanka made just one change to the eleven that last played the Indians – Thilan Thushara made way for Dilhara Fernando.

On winning the toss, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, India’s skipper, chose to bat. Although his 12-ball (Sach)innings included a six, Tendulkar had no reason to be in seventh heaven – a dozen balls into the match, he was trapped leg before wicket by Fernando, who broke the nine-ball stand.

The second-wicket pair put on 15. Gautam Gambhir, whose nine-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 10. A dozen balls later, Fernando ran him out.

India scored 50 off 7.5 overs. Incidentally, that was a run-a-ball 50. Sri Lanka had conceded three extras at that point.

The third-wicket pair put on 50 off 43 balls. While Virender Sehwag’s contribution to the partnership was 27, the contribution of Yuvraj Singh, the player of the match, to it was 22. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was a run.

The second Powerplay of India’s innings was between the 12th and the 16th over. Fourteen overs into the match, the first drinks break was taken. India had scored 96 for the loss of a couple of wickets at that point. While Sehwag was batting on 33, Yuvraj was batting on 40.

Pathan’s half-century – which included three boundaries and as many sixes – came off 33 balls. He eventually scored 59 off 38 balls, which included four boundaries, in addition to the aforementioned number of sixes. He was unbeaten.

India scored 363 for the loss of five wickets off 50 overs. Jayasuriya bowled half-a-dozen wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 40. Farveez Maharoof, who bowled seven wicketless overs, conceding 68. Nuwan Kulasekara, who bowled 10 wicketless overs, conceded 68.

Fernando, who bowled eight overs, conceded 63. He picked up a wicket. Mendis, who bowled nine overs, conceded 64. He picked up a wicket. Muralitharan, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 60. He picked up a wicket.

Jayasuriya, who faced a ball, didn’t get off the mark. Praveen Kumar had a reason to be in seventh heaven – he broke the run-a-ball stand.

Sri Lanka scored 50 off eight overs (51 balls). India had conceded four extras at that point. Tillakaratne Dilshan, whose 26-ball innings included four boundaries and a six, scored 31. Forty-five balls after Jayasuriya’s dismissal, Zaheer Khan broke the 44-run stand.

The last-wicket pair put on 27. Fernando, whose 17-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and a six, scored 19. Thirty-eight balls after Kulasekara’s dismissal, Tendulkar and Yuvraj ran him out.

Sri Lanka, who were dismissed for 216 off 41.4 overs, lost by 147 runs. Tendulkar, who bowled an over, conceded 11. He was wicketless, as was Ishant Sharma, who bowled five overs, conceded 35.

Yuvraj, who bowled 3.4 overs, conceded 14. He picked up a wicket. Sehwag, who bowled seven overs, conceded 30. He picked up a wicket. Khan bowled eight overs, including a maiden. He conceded 44, picking up a wicket.

Kumar, who bowled seven overs, conceded 41. He picked up two wickets. Ojha, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 38. He picked up four scalps.

India led the five-match series 3-0. In fact, they won the series with two matches to spare.
