Delhi hosted
India’s last One-day International of 2009. They made a couple of changes to
their playing eleven – Sachin Tendulkar and Ishant (Shar)made way for Mahendra
Singh Dhoni (who returned after serving his two-match ban to lead the team) and
debutant Sudeep Tyagi.
Sri Lanka made a couple of Chan(aka)ges to the eleven that last played the Indians – Mahela Jayawardene and Lasith Malinga made way for debutant Muthumudalige Pushpakumara and Welegedara.
On winning the toss, Dhoni inserted the visitors. The start of their innings was delayed due to a wet ground. Upul Tharanga, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. A ball into the match, he was dismissed by Zaheer Khan.
The second Powerplay of Sri Lanka’s innings was between the 11th and the 15th over. Tillakaratne Dilshan, whose 39-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 20. Sixty-four balls after Tharanga’s D(hon)ismissal, he was caught behind. Khan broke the 39-run stand.
Thirteen overs into the match, the drinks break was taken. Sri Lanka had scored 45 for the loss of a couple of wickets at that point. While Sanath Jayasuriya was batting on 19, Kumar Sangakkara, their skipper, hadn’t opened their account.
Sri Lanka scored 50 off 14 overs (90 balls). The number of extras India had conceded at that point gave them no reason to be in seventh heaven.
Sangakkara, who faced nine balls, eventually scored just a run. Twenty-six balls later, he was caught by Suresh Raina. Tyagi broke the 19-run stand.
Jayasuriya, whose 51-ball innings included five boundaries, eventually scored 31. Nine balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Harbhajan Singh, who broke the two-run stand.
The fifth-wicket pair put on three. Thilan, who faced a couple of balls, scored as many. Eight balls later, (Samarawee)ran him out.
Thilina Kandamby, whose 21-ball innings included a boundary, scored 12. He was unbeaten, as was Pushpakumara, who faced 19 balls, and had no reason to be in seventh heaven.
A hundred and forty-one balls into the match, the pitch was deemed dangerous, and the match was called off. Ashish Nehra bowled five wicketless overs, conceding 24.
Harbhajan bowled four overs, conceding 12. He picked up a wicket, as did Tyagi, who bowled 6.3 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 15. Khan bowled five overs, including a maiden. He conceded 31, picking up two scalps.
India won the five-match series 3-1.
