SL D(hon)isappoint India; Both advance

While India made no changes to their playing eleven, Sri Lanka made a couple of changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Farveez Maharoof and Muttiah Muralitharan made way for Angelo Mathews, the player of the match, and Lasith Malinga.

On winning the toss, Kumar Sangakkara, Sri Lanka’s skipper, chose to bat. Their openers put on 50 off 6.5 overs (46 balls). India had conceded half-a-dozen extras at that point. While Tillakaratne Dilshan was batting on 23, Sanath Jayasuriya was batting on 22.

Dilshan, whose 27-ball innings included four boundaries, didn’t add to the aforementioned score. Fifty-two legal balls into the match, he was caught by Mahendra Singh Dhoni, India’s skipper. Ishant Sharma broke the 57-run stand.

The second Powerplay of Sri Lanka’s innings was between the 10th over and the 15th over. (Sana)Thirteen overs into the match, the first drinks break was taken. Sri Lanka had scored 86 for the loss of a wicket at that point. While Jayasuriya was batting on 43, Mahela Jayawardene was batting on a dozen.

Jayawardene, whose 24-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, eventually scored 17. Thirty-seven balls later, he was stumped by Dhoni. Yusuf Pathan broke the run-a-ball partnership.

Sri Lanka scored 100 off 16.3 overs (108 balls). India had conceded 10 extras at that point. Jayasuriya’s half-century – which included seven boundaries – came off 45 balls.

Sangakkara, who faced 14 balls, scored just five. Seventeen balls after Jayawardene’s dismissal, he was trapped leg before wicket by Harbhajan Singh, who broke the eight-run stand.

Sri Lanka scored 150 off 25.4 overs (164 balls). India had conceded a dozen extras at that point.

The fourth-wicket pair put on 50 off 52 balls. While Jayasuriya’s contribution to the partnership was 42, Mathews’ contribution to it was nine. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was a couple.

Twenty-eight overs into the match, the drinks break was taken. Sri Lanka was scored 167 for the loss of three wickets at that point. While Jayasuriya was batting on 96, Mathews was batting on 14.

Jayasuriya, whose 78-ball innings included 13 boundaries, eventually scored 98. Sixty-nine balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Ashish Nehra, who broke the 70-run partnership.

Mathews, whose 37-ball innings included a boundary, eventually scoreD(ho)nineteen. Ten balls later, he was stumped. Suresh Raina broke the four-run stand.

Sri Lanka scored 200 off 35.4 overs (224 balls). India had conceded 13 extras at that point.

The sixth-wicket pair put on 50 off 61 balls. While Thilina Kandamby’s contribution to the partnership was 23, Chamara Kapugedera’s contribution to it was 26. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was a couple.

Sri Lanka scored 250 off 44.2 overs (277 balls). India had conceded 14 extras at that point. The third Powerplay of Sri Lanka’s innings was between the 45th over and the 50th over.

The sixth-wicket pair put on 73. Kapugedera, whose 43-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, eventually scored 36. Ninety-two balls later, R P Singh ran him out.

Kandamby’s half-century – which included four boundaries – came off 56 balls. He eventually scored 91 off 73 balls, which included 11 boundaries.

Sri Lanka scored 300 off 49.2 overs (307 balls). India had conceded 15 extras at that point. That was, incidentally, the number of extras they eventually conceded. Nuwan Kulasekara, who faced four balls, scored three. He was unbeaten. Sri Lanka scored 307 for the loss of half-a-dozen wickets off 50 overs.

Yuvraj Singh, who bowled three overs, conceded 20. He was wicketless, as was R P, who bowled eight overs, conceding 58.

Raina, who bowled three overs, conceded 14. He picked up a wicket. Pathan, who bowled eight overs, conceded 45. He picked up a wicket. Nehra, who bowled nine overs, conceded 62. He picked up a wicket.

Sharma and Harbhajan bowled 10 overs each, picking up a wicket apiece. While the former conceded 67, the latter, whose spell included a maiden, conceded 37.

Dinesh Karthik, whose 23-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 16. Thirty-four balls into the chase, he was caught by Sangakkara. Thilan Thushara broke the 32-run stand.

India scored 50 off 9.5 overs (60 balls). Sri Lanka had conceded half-a-dozen extras at that point.

Tendulkar, whose 33-ball (Sach)innings included five boundaries, scored 27. Fifty-one balls later, he was caught by Ajantha Mendis. Kulasekara broke the 35-run stand.

Sixteen overs into the chase, the first drinks break was taken. India had scored 81 for the loss of a couple of wickets at that point. While Rahul Dravid was batting on 16, Yuvraj was batting on 10.

India scored 100 off 18.4 overs (116 balls). Sri Lanka had conceded a dozen extras at that point.

Yuvraj, whose 22-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 16. Thirty-three balls after Tendulkar’s dismissal, he was caught by Sangakkara. Malinga broke the 38-run stand.

Raina, who faced a ball, didn’t get off the mark. Four balls later, he was caught by Sangakkara. Mathews broke the three-run stand. Dravid, whose 56-ball innings included three boundaries and the only six of the innings, scored 47. Twenty-five balls later, Mathews broke the 18-run stand.

Dhoni, who faced 18 balls, scored just eight. Eight balls later, Mathews broke the three-run stand. Pathan, who faced five balls, scored a run. A couple of balls later, he was caught by Sangakkara. Mathews broke the one-run stand. Harbhajan, who faced 10 balls, scored four. Fifteen balls later, Mathews broke the five-run stand.

Twenty-nine overs into the chase, the second drinks break was taken. India had scored 135 for the loss of eight wickets at that point. R P was batting on a couple. He eventually scored 19 off 25 balls, including a couple of boundaries. He was unbeaten. Nehra, who faced four balls, scored a run. Eight balls later, Mathews broke the four-run stand.

India scored 150 off 33.1 overs (205 balls). Sri Lanka had conceded 14 extras at that point.

The third Powerplay of their innings was between the 38th and the 42nd over. Sharma, whose 27-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 13. Forty-two balls later, he was caught by the substitute, Upul Tharanga. Mendis broke the 29-run stand.

Sri Lanka eventually conceded 16 extras. India, who were dismissed for 168 off 37.2 overs, lost by 139 runs. Dilshan and Jayasuriya bowled two wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 17, the latter conceded five.

Mendis, who bowled 5.2 overs, conceded 22. He picked up a wicket. Thushara, who bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceded 34. He picked up a wicket.

Kulasekara and Malinga bowled eight overs each, picking up a wicket apiece. While the former conceded 35, the latter conceded 33. Mathews, who bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceded 20. He picked up half-a-dozen scalps.

Both India and Sri Lanka advanced.
