India win runfest; SL D(hon)isappointed

India made a couple of changes to their playing (Pat)eleven – Yuvraj Singh and Munaf made way for Virat Kohli and Zaheer Khan.

Sri Lanka made four changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Thilan Thushara, Chamara Kapugedera, Lasith Malinga and Ajantha Mendis made way for Upul Tharanga, Thilan Samaraweera, One-day International debutant Chanaka Welegedara and Dilhara Fernando.

On winning the toss, Kumar Sangakkara, Sri Lanka’s skipper, inserted the hosts, whose openers scored 50 off 8.3 overs (51 balls). Sri Lanka hadn’t conceded any extras at that point. While Virender Sehwag, the player of the match, was batting on 34, Sachin Tendulkar was batting on 20. Sehwag’s half-century – which included eight boundaries and a couple of sixes – came off 34 balls.

The second Powerplay of India's innings was between the 11th and the 15th over. India scored 100 off 14.3 overs (87 balls). Sri Lanka had conceded an extra at that point. While Sehwag was batting on 54, Tendulkar was batting on 48. The latter's half-century – which included nine boundaries – came off 48 balls.

Sixteen overs into the match, the first drinks break was taken. India had scored 125 without the loss of a wicket at that point. While Sehwag was batting on 71, Tendulkar was batting on 53.

India scored 150 off 19 overs (115 balls). Sri Lanka had conceded three extras at that point. While Sehwag was batting on 81, Tendulkar was batting on 69. Sehwag, whose 102-ball innings included 17 boundaries and half-a-dozen sixes, eventually scored 146. Ninety-six balls after Tendulkar’s dismissal, he was caught by Tillakaratne Dilshan. Welegedara broke the 156-run partnership.

Dhoni, whose 53-ball innings included seven boundaries and three sixes, eventually scored 72. Four balls after Sehwag’s dismissal, he was caught by Angelo Mathews. Fernando broke the two-run stand.

Gautam Gambhir, whose eight-ball innings included a boundary, scored 11. Fourteen balls later, he was caught by Sangakkara. Nuwan Kulasekara broke the run-a-ball stand. Suresh Raina, whose 20-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 16. Twenty-two balls later, he was caught by Sanath Jayasuriya. Kulasekara broke the 22-run stand.

India scored 350 off 42.5 overs (268 balls). Sri Lanka had conceded 25 extras at that point. Harbhajan Singh, whose 13-ball innings included a boundary, scored 11. Half-a-dozen balls later, he was caught by Kulasekara. Mathews broke the five-run stand.

Kohli, whose 19-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 27. Twenty-five balls later, Welegedara broke the 34-run stand.

India scored 400 off 49 overs (307 balls). Sri Lanka had conceded 27 extras at that point. That was, incidentally, the number of extras they eventually conceded. Ravindra Jadeja, whose 17-ball innings included a boundary and a couple of sixes, scored 30. He was unbeaten, as was Praveen Kumar, who faced seven balls, scoring five.

India eventually scored 414 for the loss of seven wickets off 50 overs. Dilshan, who bowled a couple of wicketless overs, conceded 26. Thilina Kandamby, who bowled five wicketless overs, conceded 49. Jayasuriya, who bowled seven wicketless overs, conceded 76.

Mathews, who bowled seven overs, conceded 60. He picked up a wicket. Fernando, who bowled nine overs, conceded 66. He picked up a couple of wickets, as did Kulasekara and Welegedara, who bowled 10 overs apiece. While the former conceded 65, the latter conceded 63.

Sri Lanka’s openers put on 50 off 7.2 overs (47 balls). India had conceded four extras at that point. While Tharanga's contribution to the partnership was 18, Dilshan's contribution to the partnership was 31.

Dilshan’s half-century – which included 10 boundaries – came off 38 balls.

The second Powerplay of Sri Lanka’s innings was between the 11th and the 15th over. They scored 100 off 12 overs (77 balls). India had conceded half-a-dozen extras at that point. While Tharanga's contribution to the partnership was 30, Dilshan's contribution to it was 64.

Jayasuriya, who faced four balls, scored five. Half-a-dozen balls later, he was stumped by Dhoni. Harbhajan broke the 12-run stand. Dilshan, whose 124-ball innings included 20 boundaries and three sixes, eventually scored 160. Ten balls later, Harbhajan broke the 11-run stand.

The fifth-wicket pair put on half-a-dozen. Jayawardene, who faced eight balls, scored three. Seven balls (Mahe)later, Kohli and Dhoni ran him out.

Sri Lanka scored 350 off 41.3 overs (262 balls). India had conceded 17 extras at that point. The sixth-wicket pair put on 50 off 43 balls. While Thilan Kandamby's contribution to the partnership was 20, Mathews' contribution was 27. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was three.

The sixth-wicket pair put on 56. Kandamby, whose 25-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, eventually scored 24. Forty-eight balls after Jayawardene's dismissal, Tendulkar and Khan ran him out.

The seventh-wicket pair put on three. Samaraweera, who faced a ball, didn’t get off the mark. Four balls later, Raina and Kumar ran him out.

Mathews, whose 33-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 38. Four balls later, he was caught by Tendulkar. Nehra broke the five-run stand. Kulasekara, who faced a couple of balls, scored as many. He was unbeaten, as was Welegedara, who faced a ball, scoring a run.

Sri Lanka, who scored 411 for the loss of eight wickets off 50 overs, won by three runs. Jadeja bowled eight overs, conceding 73. He was wicketless, as was Khan, who bowled 10 overs, conceding 88.

Raina bowled three overs, conceding 27. He picked up a wicket. Kumar bowled nine overs, conceding 67. He picked up a wicket. Nehra bowled 10 overs, conceding 81. He picked up a wicket. Harbhajan, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 58. He picked up a couple of scalps.

India led the five-match series 1-0.
