Sehwag leads; India beat SL

India made three changes to their playing eleven – Virat Kohli, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (who was serving a two-match ban for the team’s failure to maintain the over rate during the previous match) and Praveen Kumar (Shar)made way for Yuvraj Singh, Dinesh Karthik and Ishant.

Sri Lanka made a couple of changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Angelo Mathews and Suranga Lakmal made way for Nuwan Kulasekara and Lasith Malinga.

On winning the toss, Kumar Sangakkara, Sri Lanka's skipper, chose to bat. Their openers put on 50 off 3.4 overs (26 balls). India had conceded five extras at that point. While Upul Tharanga’s contribution to the partnership was 17, Tillakaratne Dilshan's contribution to it was 28.

Dilshan, whose 18-ball innings included 10 boundaries, eventually scored 41. Thirty-eight balls into the match, he was caught by Dinesh Karthik. Ashish Nehra broke the 65-run partnership.

The second Powerplay of Sri Lanka's innings was between the 11th and 15th over. Sri Lanka scored 100 off 11.5 overs (75 balls). India had conceded half-a-dozen extras at that point.

Fourteen overs into the match, the first drinks break was taken. Sri Lanka scored 112 for the loss of a wicket at that point. While Tharanga was batting on 42, Sangakkara was batting on 23.

The second-wicket pair put on 50 off 48 balls. While Tharanga’s contribution to the partnership was 25. Sangakkara's contribution to it was 24. Extras’ contribution to it was a run.

Tharanga’s half-century – which included five boundaries and a six – came off 51 balls.

Sri Lanka scored 150 off 19.4 overs (123 balls). The number of extras India had conceded at that point gave them no reason to be in seventh heaven.

The second-wicket pair put on 100 off 97 balls. While Tharanga’s contribution to the partnership was 52, Sangakkara's contribution to it was 46. Extras’ contribution to it was a couple.

Sangakkara, whose 41-ball innings included three boundaries and a six, conceded 46. Ninety-seven balls after Dilshan's dismissal, he was stumped by Karthik. Virender Sehwag, who was leading India instead of Dhoni, broke the 100-run partnership.

Tharanga, whose 81-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries and a six, eventually scored 73. Thirteen balls later, Ravindra Jadeja, the player of the match, broke the four-run stand.

Jayawardene, who faced a dozen balls, scored just a couple. Eight balls (Mahe)later, he was caught by Suresh Raina. Harbhajan Singh broke the four-run stand.

Sri Lanka’s run-a-ball 200 came off 32.2 overs. India had conceded eight extras at that point.

Thirty-four overs into the match, the second drinks break was taken. Sri Lanka scored 203 for the loss of a wicket at that point. While Thilina Kandamby was batting on 18, Chamara Kapugedera was batting on 15.

Kapugedera, who faced 28 balls, didn’t add to the aforementioned score. Fifty-one balls after Jayawardene's dismissal, Jadeja broke the 31-run stand. Kandamby, whose 29-ball innings included three boundaries, eventually scored 22. Eight balls later, Sharma broke the six-run stand.

The seventh-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Suraj Randiv, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. The next ball, he was caught by Karthik off the bowling of Sharma. Kulasekara, whose 14-ball innings included a boundary, scored 10. Thirteen balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Jadeja, who broke the eight-run stand.

Ajantha Mendis, who faced 14 balls, scored half-a-dozen. Twenty-nine balls later, Jadeja broke the 18-run stand.

The third Powerplay of Sri Lanka's innings was between the 44th and 48th over. Malinga, whose 24-ball innings included a boundary and a six, scored 13. Eight balls later, Nehra broke the three-run stand. Chanaka Welegedara, who faced four balls, scored a couple. He was unbeaten.

India eventually conceded nine extras. Sri Lanka were dismissed for 239 off 44.2 overs. Yuvraj Singh, who bowled an over, conceded five. He was wicketless, as was Zaheer Khan, who bowled seven overs, conceding 49.

Sehwag, who bowled four overs, conceded 26. He picked up a wicket, as Harbhajan, who bowled nine overs, conceded 29. He picked up a wicket.

Nehra, who bowled 6.2 overs, conceded 32. He picked up a couple of wickets, as was Sharma, who bowled seven overs, conceding 63. Jadeja, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 32. He picked up four scalps.

India’s openers put on 50 off 6.3 overs (40 balls). Sri Lanka had conceded an extra at that point. While Sehwag’s contribution to the partnership was 40, Sachin Tendulkar's contribution to it was 10.

Sehwag, whose 28-ball innings included nine boundaries, eventually scored 44. Seven overs into the chase, he was caught by Dilshan. Welegedara broke the 55-run partnership.

The second Powerplay of India's innings was between the 11th and 15th over. They scored 100 off 14.4 overs (90 balls). Sri Lanka had conceded three extras at that point.

The second-wicket pair put on 50 off 53 balls. While Tendulkar’s contribution to the partnership was 31, Gautam Gambhir's contribution to it was 18. Extras’ contribution to it was a couple.

Sixteen overs into the match, the first drinks break was taken. India scored 107 for the loss of a wicket at that point. While Tendulkar was batting on 42, Gambhir was batting on 18. The former's half-century – which included seven boundaries – came off 57 balls.

Gambhir, whose 52-ball innings included three boundaries, eventually scored 32. Eighty-seven balls after Sehwag’s dismissal, he was caught by Randiv, who broke the 72-run partnership.

India scored 150 off 27 overs (164 balls). Sri Lanka had conceded five extras at that point. Yuvraj, whose 40-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 23. Sixty-eight balls after Gambhir’s dismissal, he was caught by Sangakkara. Welegedara broke the 42-run partnership.

India scored 200 off 37.4 overs (229 balls). Sri Lanka had conceded half-a-dozen extras at that point.

The fourth-wicket pair put on 50 off 44 balls. While Tendulkar’s contribution to the partnership was 22, Karthik's contribution to it was 26. Extras’ contribution to it was four.

Tendulkar, whose 104-ball innings included 13 boundaries, scored 96. He was unbeaten, as was Karthik, who scored 32 off 31 balls, which included four boundaries and a six.

Sri Lanka eventually conceded 16 extras. India, who scored 243 for the loss of three wickets off 42.3 overs, won by seven wickets with 45 balls to spare. Kulasekara bowled eight wicketless overs, conceding 47.

Mendis bowled nine wicketless overs, conceding 67. Malinga bowled 9.3 wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 56.

Randiv and Welegedara bowled eight overs, including a maiden, apiece. The former conceded 33, picking up a wicket. The latter conceded 35, picking up a couple of scalps.

India led the five-match series 2-1.
