Dhoni-led India beat SA narrowly

Neither India nor South Africa made and changes to their playing eleven.

On winning the toss, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, India's skipper, chose to bat.

The first Powerplay of India’s innings – which was the mandatory Powerplay – was between the first and the 10th over. They scored 28 and lost a wicket – that of Murali Vijay, who scored 16. His 32-ball innings included three boundaries. Eight overs into the match, he was caught by Morne Morkel. Lonwabo Tsotsobe broke the 21-run stand.

The second Powerplay of India’s innings – which was the bowling Powerplay – was between the 11th and the 15th over. They scored 26, without losing a wicket.

India scored 50 off 14.4 overs (88 balls). South Africa had conceded a couple of extras at that point.

Seventeen overS(ach)into the match, the first drinks break was taken. India had conceded 60 for the loss of a wicket at that point. While Tendulkar was batting on 22, Virat Kohli was batting on 20.

The second-wicket pair put on 42. Kohli, whose 34-ball innings included a boundary, eventually scored 22. Fifty-nine balls later, David Miller ran him out.

Tendulkar, whose 44-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, eventually scored 24. Half-a-dozen boundaries later, Johan Botha ran him out.

India scored 100 off 27.2 overs (164 balls). South Africa had conceded four extras at that point.

The fourth-wicket pair put on 50 off 74 balls. While Yuvraj Singh's contribution to the partnership was 28, Dhoni’s contribution to it was 20. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was four.

Thirty-five overs into the match, the second drinks break was taken. India had scored 137 for the loss of three wickets at that point. While Yuvraj’s contribution to the partnership was 42, Dhoni’s contribution to it was 27.

India scored 150 off 36.3 overs (219 balls). South Africa had conceded half-a-dozen extras at that point.

Yuvraj's half-century – which included four boundaries – came off 67 balls. He faced 68 balls, eventually scoring 53 balls. A hundred and seven balls after Tendulkar’s dismissal, he was caught by Steyn. Tsotsobe broke the 83-run partnership.

The third Powerplay of India’s innings – which was the bowling Powerplay - was between the 42nd and the 46th over. They scored 46 and lost four wickets.

Suresh Raina, whose 14-ball innings included a boundary, scored 11. Twenty-seven balls after Yuvraj’s dismissal, he was trapped leg before wicket by Tsotsobe, who broke the 19-rin stand.

Dhoni, whose 61-ball innings included a boundary, scored 38. A dozen balls later, Tsotsobe broke the three-run stand. Harbhajan Singh had no reason to be in seventh heaven – he scored just three. Ten balls later, he was caught by Miller. Morkel broke the five-run stand.

Zaheer Khan, who faced three balls, didn’t get off the mark. Five balls later, he was caught by Tsotsobe. Steyn broke the two-run stand. Rohit Sharma, whose 14-ball innings included a boundary, scored nine. Five balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Morkel, who broke the run-a-ball stand.

Ashish Nehra, who faced three balls, scored a run. Five balls later, he was caught by Botha. Steyn broke the six-run stand. Munaf Patel, the player of the match, faced four balls, scoring half-a-dozen (which included a boundary). He was unbeaten.

The number of extras they conceded gave South Africa no reason to be in seventh heaven. India were dismissed for 190 off 47.2 overs. Jean-Paul Duminy, who bowled three overs, conceded 19. He was unbeaten, as was Wayne Parnell, who bowled seven overs, conceding 43.

Botha, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 35. He picked up a wicket. Morkel, who bowled eight overs, conceded 32. He picked up a couple of wickets, as did Steyn, who bowled 9.2 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 35. Tsotsobe bowled 10 overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 22, picking up four scalps.

They scored 50 off 9.4 overs (58 balls). India had conceded an extra at that point.

Hashim Amla, who faced nine balls, scored four. His runs came by way of a boundary. Eleven balls into the match, he was caught by Dhoni. Needless to say, Patel was in seventh heaven.

The second-wicket pair put on 50 off as many balls. While the contribution of Graeme Smith, South Africa’s skipper, to the partnership was 29, Colin Ingram's contribution to it was 20. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was a run.

Ingram, whose 30-ball innings included a boundary and a six, eventually scored 25. Sixty-two balls after Amla's dismissal, he was trapped leg before wicket by Harbhajan, who broke the 59-run partnership.

Smith’s half-century – which included five boundaries – came off 59 balls.

AB de Villiers, whose 13-ball innings included a boundary, scored eight. Eighteen balls after Ingram’s dismissal, he was caught by Dhoni. Nehra broke the 11-run stand.

South Africa scored 100 off 21.2 overs (128 balls). India had conceded an extra at that point.

Duminy, whose 19-ball innings included a boundary, scored 13. Fifty-six balls after de Villiers' dismissal, he was caught by Vijay. Sharma broke the 43-run stand.

The third Powerplay of South Africa’s innings – which was the batting Powerplay – was between the 32nd and the 36th over. They scored 29 and lost three wickets.

South Africa scored 150 off 32 overs (192 balls). India had conceded three extras at that point.

Smith, whose 98-ball innings included eight boundaries, eventually scored 77. Forty-six balls later, Patel broke the 32-run stand. Miller, whose 28-ball innings included three boundaries and a six, scored 27. Eight balls (Chaw)later, he was caught by the substitute, Piyush. Khan broke the run-a-ball stand.

Botha had no reason to be in seventh heaven – he scored just four. Ten balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Khan, who broke the three-run stand. The eighth-wicket pair put on 14. Steyn, who faced 14 balls, scored half-a-dozen. Twenty-three balls later, Yuvraj and Vijay ran him out.

The ninth-wicket pair put on 11. Morkel, whose 11-ball innings included a boundary, scored half-a-dozen. Twenty balls later, he was caught by the substitute, Yusuf Pathan, off the bowling of Patel.

Parnell, whose 27-ball innings included a boundary, scored a dozen. Four balls later, he was caught by Yuvraj. Patel broke the one-run stand. Tsotsobe, who faced a couple of balls, scored a run. He was unbeaten.

India eventually conceded half-a-dozen extras. South Africa, who were dismissed for 189 off 43 overs, lost by a run. Yuvraj bowled an over, conceding three. He was wicketless, as was Raina, who bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceded 27.

Sharma bowled two overs, conceding 12. He picked up a wicket. Nehra bowled seven overs, including a maiden. He conceded 44, picking up a wicket. Harbhajan bowled 10 overs, conceding 32. He picked up a wicket.

Khan bowled nine wickets, conceding 37. He picked up a couple of wickets. Patel bowled eight overs, conceding 29. He picked up four scalps.

India levelled the five-match series 1-1.
