Sri Lanka rout Dhoni-led India

India made just one change to their playing eleven – Virat Kohli made way for Yuvraj Singh. Sri Lanka made (Fernan)do Cha(mara)nges to their playing eleven – Thilan Samaraweera and Dilhara made way for Silva and Thisara Perera, the player of the match.

On winning the toss, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, India’s skipper, chose to bat. Virender Sehwag, whose run-a-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored a dozen. Thirty-two balls into the match, he was trapped leg before wicket by Nuwan Kulasekara, who broke the 20-run stand.

Dinesh Karthik, who faced 25 balls, scored nine. Eight balls later, he was caught by Kumar Sangakkara, Sri Lanka’s skipper. Kulasekara broke the six-run stand.

The second Powerplay of India’s innings was between the 11th and the 15th over. India scored 50 off 11.4 overs (73 balls). Sri Lanka had conceded five extras at that point.

Rohit Sharma, whose 21-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 11. Twenty-eight balls after Karthik’s dismissal, he was trapped leg before wicket by Angelo Mathews, who broke the 24-run stand.

Fifteen overs into the match, the first drinks break was taken. India had scored 56 for the loss of three wickets at that point. While Yuvraj Singh was batting on 13, Suresh Raina was batting on five.

Raina, whose 16-ball innings included a boundary, scored eight. Thirty balls after Sharma’s dismissal, he was caught by Sangakkara. Perera broke the 11-run stand. Ravindra Jadeja, who faced nine balls, didn’t get off the mark. Twenty balls later, he was caught by Silva. Perera broke the six-run stand. The seventh-wicket pair failed to get off the (Ku)mark. Praveen, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. The next ball, he was caught by Upul Tharanga off the bowling of Perera.

Ashish Nehra, who faced four balls, scored a couple. Five balls later, he was caught by Sangakkara. Lasith Malinga broke the three-run stand.

The third Powerplay of India’s innings was between the 29th and the 33rd over. Thirty overs into the match, the second drinks break was taken. India had scored 99 for the loss of eight wickets at that point. While Yuvraj was batting on 38, Ishant Sharma had scored just a run.

Yuvraj, whose 64-ball innings included five boundaries and the only six of the innings, didn’t add to the aforementioned score. Twenty-four balls after Nehra's dismissal, he was trapped leg before wicket by Malinga, who broke the 19-run stand.

India scored 100 off 30.4 overs (189 balls). Sri Lanka had conceded eight extras at that point. That was, incidentally, the number of extras they eventually conceded.

Ishant, who faced 24 balls, eventually scored just three. Twenty balls after Yuvraj’s dismissal, Perera broke the four-run stand. Pragyan Ojha, who faced 10 balls, scored just a couple. He was unbeaten.

India were bundled out for 103 off 33.4 overs. Mathews bowled eight overs, including three maidens. He conceded 20, picking up a wicket.

Kulasekara and Malinga bowled nine overs each picking up a couple of wickets apiece. While the former, whose spell included a couple of maidens, conceded 31, the latter, whose spell included a maiden, conceded 21. Perera bowled 7.4 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 28, picking up five scalps.

Sri Lanka’s openers put on 50 off seven overs (38 balls). The number of extras India had conceded at that point gave them no reason to be in seventh heaven. While Mahela Jayawardene’s contribution to the partnership was 20, Dilshan’s contribution to it was 23.

Eight overs into the chase, the dinner break was taken. Sri Lanka had scored 63 without the loss of a wicket at that point. While Jayawardene was batting on 21, Dilshan was batting on 31.

Dilshan, whose 23-ball innings included eight boundaries, eventually scored 35. Fifty-six balls into the match, he was caught by Nehra. Ishant broke the 79-run partnership.

The second-wicket pair failed to get off the mark. Jayawardene, whose 35-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries, eventually scored 33. A ball after Dilshan’s dismissal, he was caught by Jadeja off the bowling of Ishant.

The batting Powerplay of Sri Lanka’s innings was between the 11th and the 15th over. Sri Lanka scored 100 off 15 overs (95 balls). India had conceded 11 extras at that point. That was, incidentally, the number of extras they eventually conceded.

He was wicketless, as was Kumar, who bowled seven overs, including a maiden. He conceded 44. Ishant, who bowled 3.1 overs, conceded 15. He picked up a couple of scalps.
