Series Level; India are D(hon)isappointed

While India made no changes to their playing eleven, Sri Lanka made four Cha(mara)nges – Sanath Jayasuriya, Thilan Samaraweera, Nuwan Kulasekara and Dilhara Fernando made way for Kapugedera, a couple of One-day International debutants (Suraj Randiv and Suranga Lakmal) and Ajantha Mendis.

On winning the toss, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, India’s skipper, chose to bat. Virender Sehwag, who faced four balls, scored as many. His runs came by way of a boundary. Four balls into the match, he was caught by Kumar Sangakkara, Sri Lanka’s skipper. Chanaka Welegedara broke the four-run stand.

The second-wicket pair put on 15. Gautam Gambhir, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored a couple. Twenty-one balls later, Angelo Mathews ran him out.

The second Powerplay of India’s innings was between the 11th and the 15th over. They scored 50 off 11.5 overs (72 balls). Sri Lanka had conceded an extra at that point.

The third-wicket pair put on 50 off 60 balls. While Sachin Tendulkar’s contribution to the partnership was 23, Virat Kohli's contribution to it was 28. Extras didn’t contribute to the partnership.

Sixteen overs into the match, the first drinks break was taken. India had scored 80 for the loss of a couple of wickets at that point. While Tendulkar was batting on 43, Kohli was batting on 30.

Tendulkar, whose 52-ball innings included four boundaries, didn’t add to the aforementioned score. Seventy-six balls after Gambhir’s (Men)dismissal, he was stumped by Sangakkara. The spinner broke the 62-run partnership.

Kohli, whose 65-ball innings included seven boundaries, eventually scored 54. Fifty-eight balls after Tendulkar’s dismissal, he was caught by Tillakaratne Dilshan, the player of the match. Randiv broke the 51-run partnership.

India scored 150 off 29.5 overs (180 balls). Sri Lanka had conceded half-a-dozen extras at that point.

Thirty-three overs into the match, the second drinks break was taken. India had scored 164 for the loss of four wickets at that point. While Dhoni was batting on 44, Suresh Raina was batting on 11. The former's half-century – which included three boundaries – came off 70 balls.

The fifth-wicket pair put on 50 off 66 balls. While Dhoni’s contribution to the partnership was 32, Raina's contribution to it was 17. Extras didn’t contribute to the partnership.

India scored 200 off 40.1 overs (242 balls). The number of extras Sri Lanka had conceded at that point gave them no reason to be in seventh heaven.

The third Powerplay of India’s innings was between the 41st and the 45th over.

Raina’s half-century – which included a couple of boundaries and three sixes – came off 44 balls.

The fifth-wicket pair put on 100 off 103 balls. While Dhoni’s contribution to the partnership was 45, Raina's contribution to it was 55. Extras' contribution to the partnership was three.

India scored 250 off 45 overs (273 balls). Sri Lanka had conceded nine extras at that point.

Raina, whose 55-ball innings included four boundaries and three sixes, eventually scored 68. A hundred and nineteen balls after Kohli's dismissal, he was caught by Randiv. Mathews broke the 126-run partnership.

Dhoni’s ton – which included seven boundaries and a couple of sixes – came off 106 balls.

India’s run-a-ball 300 came off 49.2 overs. Sri Lanka had conceded 11 extras at that point. That was, incidentally, the number of extras at that point.

The man from Ranchi, whose 111-ball innings included eight boundaries in addition to the aforementioned number of sixes, eventually scored 107. (Dho)Nineteen balls after Raina’s dismissal, he was caught by Randiv. Mathews broke the 42-run stand.

Ravindra Jadeja, whose six-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored a dozen. He was unbeaten. Harbhajan Singh, who faced a ball, didn’t get off the mark. Three balls later, he was stumped by Sangakkara. Randiv broke the one-run stand.

India conceded 301 for the loss of seven wickets off 50 overs. Dilshan, who bowled three overs, conceded 16. He was wicketless, as was Lakmal, who bowled eight overs, conceding 57. Welegedara, who bowled nine overs, conceded 53. He picked up a wicket.

Mathews and Mendis bowled 10 overs each, picking up a wicket apiece. While the former, whose spell included a maiden, conceded 60, the latter conceded 57. Randiv, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 51. He picked up three scalps.

Sri Lanka’s openers scored 50 off 6.3 overs (40 balls). India had conceded a couple of extras at that point. While Upul Tharanga's contribution to the partnership was 26, Dilshan's contribution to it was 25. The latter’s half-century – which included nine boundaries and a six – came off 31 balls.

Sri Lanka scored 100 off 13.1 overs (80 balls). India had conceded a couple of extras at that point. While Upul Tharanga's contribution to the partnership was 36, Dilshan's contribution to it was 62.

Tharanga, whose 42-ball innings included five boundaries, eventually scored 37. Fourteen overs into the chase, he was caught by Sehwag. Harbhajan broke the 102-run partnership.

The second Powerplay of Sri Lanka’s innings was between the 16th and the 20th over.

Jayawardene, whose 47-ball innings included a boundary, eventually scored 39. Twenty balls later, he was caught behind. Khan broke the (Dho)nineteen-run stand.

Sri Lanka scored 250 off 41.4 overs (251 balls). India had conceded five extras at that point.

The third Powerplay of Sri Lanka’s innings was between the 45th and the 49th over. Thilina Kandamby, whose 32-ball innings included two boundaries, scored 27. Thirty-two balls later, he was caught by Kohli. Khan broke the run-a-ball stand. Mathews, whose 25-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 37. He was unbeaten.

Kapugedera, who faced a couple of balls, scored as many. A couple of balls later, Khan broke the three-run stand. The seventh-wicket pair put on 18. Randiv, who faced eight balls, scored five. Fifteen balls later, Harbhajan ran him out. Mendis, who faced four balls, scored a couple. He was unbeaten.

Sri Lanka scored 300 off 49 overs (297 balls). India had conceded nine extras at that point. That was, eventually, the number of extras they eventually conceded. Sri Lanka, who scored 302 for the loss of seven wickets off 49.1 overs, won by three wickets with five wickets to spare.

Raina bowled two wicketless overs, conceding 11. Kumar bowled eight wicketless overs, conceding 48. Jadeja bowled 9.1 wicketless overs, conceding 42.

Nehra and Harbhajan bowled 10 overs each, picking up a wicket apiece. While the former conceded 74, the latter conceded 58. Khan bowled 10 overs, conceding 63. He picked up three scalps.

The five-match series was levelled 1-1.
