Dhoni-led India lose dress rehearSaL

India made three changes to their playing eleven – Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh and Ashish Nehra made way for Dinesh Karthik, Ashok Dinda and Pragyan Ojha.

Sri Lanka made seven changes to the eleven that (Mahe)last played the Indians – Dinesh Chandimal, Jeevan Mendis, Thilan Samaraweera, Ajantha Mendis, Nuwan Kulasekara, Thisara Perera and Thilan Thushara made way for Kumar Sangakkara (who was leading the team), Jayawardene, Thilina Kandamby, Angelo Mathews, Farveez Maharoof (the player of the match), Rangana Herath and Chanaka Welegedara.

On winning the toss, Sangakkara inserted the Indians.

The second Powerplay of India’s innings was between the 11th and the 15th over. Their openers scored 50 off 10.3 overs (64 balls). Sri Lanka had conceded a couple of extras at that point. While Gambhir’s contribution to the partnership was 22, Karthik’s contribution to it was 28.

Gambhir, whose 23-ball innings included three boundaries, eventually scored 23. Sixty-eight legal balls into the match, he was caught by Suraj Randiv. Mathews broke the 58-run partnership.

Virat Kohli, whose 14-ball innings included a boundary, scored 10. Nineteen balls later, he was caught by Sangakkara. Maharoof broke the 17-run stand.

Eighty-seven balls into the match, the first drinks break was taken. India had scored 75 for the loss of a couple of wickets at that point. Karthik was batting on 40. He eventually faced 43 balls, failing to add to the aforementioned score. His innings included half-a-dozen boundaries. Five balls later, he was caught by Sangakkara. Herath broke the two-run stand.

India scored 100 off 20.5 overs (126 balls). Sri Lanka had conceded a couple of extras at that point.

Suresh Raina, whose 23-ball innings included a six, scored 18. Forty-three balls later, the spinner broke tHe(ra)thirty-three-run stand.

India scored 150 off 31 overs (187 balls). Sri Lanka had conceded three extras at that point.

Thirty-four overs into the match, the second drinks break was taken. India had scored 159 for the loss of four wickets at that point. While Rohit Sharma was batting on 39, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, India’s skipper, was batting on 26.

The fifth-wicket pair put on 50 off 70 balls. While Sharma’s contribution to the partnership was 23, Dhoni’s contribution to it was 26. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was a run.

Sharma’s half-century – which included four boundaries – came off 62 balls.

The fifth-wicket pair eventually put on 79. Dhoni, whose 53-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries, scored 41. Ninety-three balls after Raina's dismissal, Chamara (Kapugede)ran him out.

The sixth-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Ravindra Jadeja, who faced a ball, didn’t get off the mark. The next ball, he was trapped leg before wicket by Maharoof. The seventh-wicket pair didn’t get off the (Ku)mark. Praveen, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. The next ball, he was dismissed by Maharoof.

The eighth-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Zaheer Khan, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. The next ball, he was caught by Sangakkara off the bowling of Maharoof, who completed his hat-trick.

The third Powerplay of India’s innings was between the 40th and the 44th over.

Dinda, who faced a dozen balls, scored just a couple. Nine balls later, Maharoof broke the six-run stand.

India scored 200 off 41.3 overs (252 balls). Sri Lanka had conceded half-a-dozen extras at that point. That was, incidentally, the number of extras they eventually conceded.

The last-wicket pair put on 14. Sharma, whose 73-ball innings included seven boundaries, eventually scored 69. Nine balls later, Sangakkara and Jayawardene ran him out. Ojha, who faced three balls, didn’t get off the mark. He was unbeaten.

India were dismissed for 209 off 42.3 overs. Kandamby, who bowled three wicketless overs, conceded 14. Welegedara, who bowled 7.3 wicketless overs, conceded 42. Randiv bowled nine wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 40.

Mathews, who bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceded 37. He picked up a wicket. Herath, who bowled seven overs, conceded 31. He picked up a couple of wickets. Maharoof bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 42, picking up five scalps.

Tillakaratne Dilshan, whose 16-ball innings included four boundaries and a six, scored 24. Thirty-three balls into the chase, he was caught by Dhoni. Khan broke the 38-run stand.

Sri Lanka scored 50 off 8.1 overs (51 balls). The number of extras India had conceded at that point gave them no reason to be in seventh heaven.

The second Powerplay was between the 11th and the 15th over.

Upul Tharanga, whose 46-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries, scored 38. Fifty balls after Dilshan’s dismissal, he was caught by Jadeja. Khan broke the 42-run stand.

Sixteen overs into the chase, the first drinks break was taken. Sri Lanka had scored 90 for the loss of a couple of wickets at that point. While Sangakkara was batting on 20, Jayawardene was batting on a run.

The third-wicket pair put on 50 off 51 balls. While Sangakkara's contribution to the partnership was 35, Jayawardene’s contribution to it was 15. Extras didn’t contribute to the partnership.

Sangakkara’s half-century – which included seven boundaries – came off 54 balls.

Sri Lanka scored 150 off 25.4 overs (157 balls). India had conceded eight extras at that point.

The third-wicket pair put on 100 off 95 balls. While Sangakkara’s contribution to the partnership was 59, Jayawardene’s contribution to it was 40. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was a run.

Sangakkara, whose 82-ball innings included 10 boundaries, eventually scored 73. A hundred and nine balls after Tharanga’s dismissal, he was caught by Khan. Kumar broke the 104-run partnership.

Thirty-two overs into the match, the second drinks break was taken. Sri Lanka scored 184 for the loss of three wickets at that point. Jayawardene was batting on 41.

Sri Lanka scored 200 off 36 overs (219 balls). India had conceded a dozen extras at this point.

Jayawardene’s half-century – which included five boundaries and a six – came off 67 balls. He eventually scored 53. He was unbeaten, as was Kandamby, who faced 14 balls, scoring seven.

Sri Lanka eventually conceded 16 extras. India, who scored 211 for the loss of three wickets off 37.3 overs, won by seven wickets with 75 balls to spare.

Sharma, who bowled a wicketless over, conceded nine. Dinda bowled five wicketless overs, included a maiden. He conceded 39. Jadeja, who bowled 6.3 wicketless overs, conceded 29. Ojha, who bowled 10 wicketless overs, conceded 49.

Kumar bowled eight overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 30, picking up a wicket. Khan bowled seven overs, including a maiden. He conceded 42, picking up a couple of scalps.

Both India and Sri Lanka advanced.
