It’S(ach)interrupted; India don’t WIn

India made three changes to their playing eleven – Vikram Rathour, Sourav Ganguly and Dodda Ganesh made way for Navjot Singh Sidhu, Rahul Dravid and debutant Abey Kuruvilla.

The West Indies made four changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Sherwin Campbell, Richie Richardson, Roger Harper and Ottis Gibson made way for Stuart Williams, Carl Hooper, Jimmy Adams and debutant Franklyn Rose.

On winning the toss, Tendulkar, India’s skipper, chose to bat. India’S(ach)innings was reduced to a 49-overs-a-side match. Sidhu, who faced 16 balls, scored five. He was trapped leg before wicket by Curtly Ambrose, who broke the 40-run stand. Tendulkar, whose 43-ball innings included 10 boundaries, scored 44. He was caught by Courtney Browne. Ambrose broke the 25-run stand.

Mohammad Azharuddin, who faced 12 balls, scored three. Rose broke the six-run stand. Rahul Dravid, whose 44-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 17. He was caught by Hooper. Brian Lara, whose 45-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 25. He was unbeaten, as was Hooper, who faced 11 balls, scoring nine.

India conceded 18 extras. The West Indies, who scored 149 for the loss of two wickets off 27.5 overs, won by eight wickets with 31 balls to spare. Tendulkar, who bowled three wicketless overs, conceded 11. Joshi, who bowled four wicketless overs, conceded 19.

Outfield’s (Zimbab)wet; India aren’t T(endulka)riumphant

There was no toss. The match was abandoned without a ball being bowled owing to a (Zimbab)wet outfield the previous morning. 

The hosts won the two-match series 1-0. Or, to sum up the result in fewer words, India Hara re (which could be translated to, “India lost”).

Owing to rain, the match was delayed, and it was reduced to a 44-overs-a-side match. India made four changes to their playing eleven – Rahul Dravid, Saba Karim, Javagal Srinath and Salil Ankola made way for Vikram Rathour, Nayan Mongia, Sunil Joshi and debutant Dodda Ganesh. Zimbabwe made one change to the eleven that last played the Indians – Stuart Carlisle made way for Andy Waller.

Tendulkar, India’s skipper, scored 13. His 15-ball (Sach)innings included the only six of the match. He was caught by Grant Flower. Eddo Brandes broke the 23-run stand. The second-wicket pair put on 10. Sourav Ganguly, who faced 20 balls, scored a couple. Paul Strang ran him out.

The Punjab-born batsman, who never represented India again, scored (Ra)th(irty-f)our. His 53-ball innings included three boundaries. He was caught by Alastair Campbell, Zimbabwe’s skipper. Guy Whittall broke the 35-run stand. The fourth-wicket pair put on four.

South Africa made just one change to the eleven that last played the Indians – Pat Symcox made way for Rudi Bryson. Hansie Cronje, South Africa’s skipper, won the toss, choosing to bat.

Andrew Hudson, whose (Srina)thirty-three-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 19. He was caught by Karim. Javagal broke the 44-run stand. Gary Kirsten, whose 69-ball innings included five boundaries, scored 51. He was caught by Rahul Dravid, the player of the match. Robin Singh broke the 86-run stand.

The third-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Jacques Kallis, whose 70-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 49. He was trapped leg before wicket by Singh. Jonty Rhodes, whose 45-ball (Sach)innings included three boundaries, scored 41. Tendulkar, India’s skipper, broke the 91-run stand.

Sachin Tendulkar, India’s skipper, won the toss, choosing to bat. Their openers did not get off the mark. Sourav Ganguly, who faced four balls, didn’t open his account. Bacher – the nephew of former South African captain and administrator Dr Ali Bacher – ran him out.
