The Sri LankanS(oura)vanquish the Indians

India made just one change to their playing eleven – Venkatesh Prasad made way for Hemang Badani. Sri Lanka made a couple of changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Avishka Gunawardene and Kaushalya Weeraratne made way for Tillakaratne Dilshan and Eric Upashantha.

On winning the toss, Sourav Ganguly, India’s skipper, inserted the Sri Lankans, whose skipper, Jayasuriya, scored 11. His 24-ball innings included a six. (Sana)Thirty-four balls later, he was caught by Zaheer Khan. Ajit Agarkar broke the 22-run stand.

Romesh Kaluwitharana, who faced 20 balls, scored eight. Thirteen balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Agarkar, who broke the three-run stand. Marvan Atapattu, whose 111-ball innings included five boundaries, scored 102. He was unbeaten.

Jayawardene, whose 123-ball innings included15 boundaries, scored 128. Two hundred and fifteen balls (Mahe)later, he was caught by Khan. Agarkar broke the 226-run partnership. The fourth-wicket pair put on 39. Russel Arnold, whose 21-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 28. Thirty-three balls later, Sriram (Sridha)ran him out. 

The fifth-wicket pair put on four. Chaminda Vaas, who faced three balls, scored a run. Five balls later, Agarkar and Vijay Dahiya ran him out. India conceded 16 extras. Sri Lanka scored 294 for the loss of five wickets off 50 wickets.

Yuvraj Singh, who bowled a wicketless over, conceded 10. Sachin Tendulkar, who bowled three wicketless overs, conceded 21. Robin Singh, who bowled four wicketless overs, conceded 36. Ganguly, who bowled five wicketless overs, conceded 34.

Sriram, who bowled seven wicketless overs, conceded 35. Khan and Sunil Joshi bowled 10 wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 54, the latter, whose spell included a maiden, conceded 46. Agarkar, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 48. He picked up three scalps.

Ganguly, who faced three balls, scored a run. Four balls into the chase, he was caught by Kumar Sangakkara. Vaas broke the two-run stand. Sriram, whose 11-ball innings included a boundary, scored half-a-dozen. Twenty-four balls later, he was caught by Dilshan. Vaas broke the 22-run stand.

Singh, whose 48-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries, scored 31. Seventy-eight balls later, he was caught by the substitute, Upul Chandana. Muralitharan, the player of the M(utti)a(tc)h, broke the 75-run partnership.

Tendulkar, whose 54-ball innings included seven boundaries, scored 61. Twenty-two balls later, he was caught by Vaas. Muralitharan broke the 10-run stand. Yuvraj, who faced 17 balls, had no reason to be in seventh heaven – 23 balls later, he was caught by Dilshan. Muralitharan broke the 11-run stand.

Vinod Kambli, who faced 29 balls, scored 10. Fifteen balls later, he was caught by Muralitharan, who broke the nine-run stand. Joshi, who faced four balls, scored three. Nine balls later, he was caught by Kaluwitharana. Muralitharan broke the five-run stand. The ninth-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Dahiya, whose 58-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 40. Four balls later, he was caught by Arnold off the bowling of Muralitharan.

Agarkar, who faced 11 balls, scored five. He was unbeaten. He was unbeaten. Khan, whose eight-ball innings included a boundary, scored five. Eighteen balls later, Jayasuriya broke the 15-run stand.

Sri Lanka conceded 14 extras. India, who were dismissed for 226 off 48.5 overs, lost by 68 runs. Jayawardene bowled four wicketless overs, conceding 26. Upashantha bowled five wicketless overs, conceding 41.

Nuwan Zoysa and Arnold bowled eight wicketless overs, including a maiden, apiece. While the former conceded 37, the latter conceded 26. Jayasuriya, who bowled 7.5 overs, conceded 26. He picked up a wicket.

Vaas, who bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceded 36. He picked up two wickets. Muralitharan bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 30, picking up seven scalps.
