India are victoriouSo(ura)ver West Indies

India made a couple of changes to their playing eleven – Dinesh Mongia and Zaheer Khan made way for Harbhajan Singh and Ashish Nehra. The West Indies made three changes to the eleven that last played Indians – Marlon Samuels, Mahendra Nagamootoo and Cameron Cuffy made way for Ramnaresh Sarwan, Neil McGarrell and Colin Stuart.

On winning the toss, Sourav Ganguly, India’s skipper, inserted the West Indians. Chris Gayle, whose 43-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 23. Eighty-nine ballS(odh)into the match, he was caught by Reetinder Singh. Harbhajan broke the 47-run stand.

The second-wicket pair put on 71. Daren Ganga, whose 94-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 55. A hundred balls later, Sameer Dighe ran him out. Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who faced 27 balls, scored 17. Sixty balls later, he was caught by Ganguly. Debasis Mohanty broke the 44-run stand.

Wavell Hinds, whose 90-ball innings included five boundaries and a six, scored 66. Half-a-dozen balls later, he was caught by Harvinder Singh broke the eight-run stand. Carl Hooper, the West Indies’ skipper, faced 17 balls, scoring 24. Twenty-four balls later, he was caught by Rahul Dravid. Harvinder broke the 31-run stand.

Ridley Jacobs, whose 21-ball innings included a six, scored 27. He was unbeaten, as was Sarwan, who faced a dozen balls, scoring 11. India conceded five extras. The West Indies scored 229 for the loss of five wickets off 50 overs.

Sachin Tendulkar, the player of the match, bowled a couple of wicketless overs, conceding 11. Sodhi bowled four wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 18. Virender Sehwag bowled five wicketless overs, conceding 30. Nehra bowled nine wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 33.

Mohanty and Harbhajan bowled 10 overs, including a maiden, each, picking up a wicket apiece. While the former conceded 39, the latter conceded 33. Harvinder, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 65. He picked up a couple of scalps.

Ganguly, whose 87-ball innings included 10 boundaries and a six, scored 62. A hundred and fifty-six balls into the chase, he was caught by Ganga. Mervyn Dillon broke the 133-run partnership.

Tendulkar, whose 131-ball innings included 12 boundaries and a six, scored 122. He was unbeaten. Sehwag, who faced nine balls, scored four. His runs came by way of a boundary. Sixteen balls later, he was stumped by Jacobs. Hooper broke the five-run stand.

Hemang Badani, who faced 24 balls, scored just four. Thirty-six balls later, Hooper broke the 14-run stand. Dravid, who faced 18 balls, scored 15. Fifty-one balls later, Gayle broke the 55-run stand. Sodhi, whose 21-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 16. He was unbeaten.

The West Indies conceded seven extras. India, who scored 230 for the loss of four wickets off 48.1 overs, lost by six wickets with 11 balls to spare. Stuart, who bowled five wicketless overs, conceded 34. Reon King, who bowled 7.1 wicketless overs, conceded 49.

McGarrell bowled 10 wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 55. Gayle, who bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceded 30. He picked up a wicket, as did Dillon, who bowled 10 overs, including four maidens. He conceded 22. Hooper bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 39, picking up a couple of scalps.
