Dada-led India beat Australia, advance

While India made no changes to their playing eleven, Australia made a couple of changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Shane Warne and Damien Fleming made way for Ian Harvey and Jason Gillespie. Andrew Symonds was Australia’s twelfth man.

On winning the toss, Steve Waugh, Australia’s skipper, inserted the Indians. The match started five minutes late due to early rain.

Tendulkar, whose 37-ball (Sach)innings included three boundaries and as many sixes, scored 38. Seventy balls into the match, he was caught by Damien Martyn. Brett Lee broke the 66-run partnership. India’s 50 came off 9.1 overs in 47 minutes.

Sourav Ganguly, India's skipper, scored 24. His 42-ball innings included five boundaries. Fifteen balls later, he was caught by Adam Gilchrist. Gillespie broke the 10-run stand. Rahul Dravid, whose 18-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored nine. Twenty-seven balls later, he was caught by Shane Lee. Gillespie broke the 14-run stand. India’s 100 came off 19.5 overs in 89 minutes.

Vinod Kambli, whose 40-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 29. Thirty-seven balls later, he was caught by Gilchrist. Steve broke the 40-run partnership. India’s 150 came off 29.2 overs. Robin Singh, who faced 30 balls, scored 19. Sixty-eight balls later, Harvey broke the 64-run partnership. India’s 200 came off 37.4 overs.

Vijay Dahiya, whose 11-ball innings included a boundary, scored five. Twenty-two balls later, he was caught by Mark Waugh. Brett broke the 21-run stand. Ajit Agarkar, who faced nine balls, scored three. Fourteen balls later, he was caught by Glenn McGrath. (Sha)Needless to say, the older of the Lee brothers was in seventh heaven.

Yuvraj Singh, the player of the match, scored 84. His 80-ball innings included 12 boundaries. His 50 – which included eight boundaries – came off 47 balls in 64 minutes. Twenty-seven balls later, he was caught by Shane, who broke the 17-run stand. India’s 250 came off 48.1 overs.

The ninth-wicket pair put on 19. Anil Kumble, who faced 21 balls, scored a dozen. Seventeen balls later, Ricky Ponting ran him out. Zaheer Khan, who was celebrating his 22nd birthday, scored 13. His run-a-ball innings included a couple of boundaries. He was unbeaten, as was Venkatesh Prasad, who faced a ball, scoring a six.

Australia conceded 23 extras. India scored 265 for the loss of nine wickets off 50 overs. McGrath bowled nine wicketless overs, conceding 61. Steve bowled four overs, conceding 28. He picked up a wicket, as did Harvey, who bowled nine overs, including a maiden. He conceded 54.

Gillespie bowled eight overs, conceding 39. He picked up a couple of wickets. The Lees bowled 10 overs each, picking up a couple of scalps apiece. While Brett conceded 39, Shane conceded 31.

The Aussies were fined a couple of overs for a slow over rate. Mark, who faced 24 balls, had no reason to be in seventh heaven – 43 balls into the chase, he was caught by Kumble. Agarkar broke the run-a-ball stand. Australia's 50 came off 8.1 overs.

Gilchrist, whose 23-ball innings included four boundaries and a six, scored 33. Ten balls after Mark’s dismissal, he was caught by Ganguly. Khan broke the eight-run stand. Harvey, whose 24-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 25. Forty-three balls later, he was caught by Yuvraj. Prasad broke the 35-run stand.

While Australia's 100 came off 18.3 overs, their 150 came off 27.3 overs. Ponting, whose 59-ball innings included five boundaries and a six, scored 46. Seventy-seven balls later, he was caught by Singh. Tendulkar broke the 73-run partnership.

The fifth-wicket pair put on four. Michael Bevan, whose 52-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 42. Fifteen balls later, Yuvraj ran him out. Martyn, who faced eight balls, scored a run. Sixteen balls later, Singh broke the six-run stand.

The seventh-wicket pair put on 20. Shane Lee, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored four. Seventeen balls later, Ganguly ran him out. Steve, whose 34-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 23. Thirty-two balls later, Khan broke the 35-run stand. Australia's 200 came off 39.5 overs.

Brett, whose 28-ball innings included three boundaries and a couple of sixes, scored 31. Eight balls later, he was caught by Ganguly. Agarkar broke the two-run stand. Gillespie, whose 16-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 14. Nineteen balls later, he was caught by Singh. Prasad broke the run-a-ball stand.

McGrath, whose eight-ball innings included a boundary, scored half-a-dozen. He was unbeaten. India conceded 13 extras. Australia, who were dismissed for 245 off 46.4 overs, lost by 20 runs. Kumble, who bowled eight wicketless overs, conceded 42.

Singh bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceding 26. He picked up a wicket, as did Tendulkar, who bowled seven overs, conceding 31. Prasad bowled 7.4 overs, conceding 43. He picked up a couple of wickets. 

Agarkar bowled eight overs, including a maiden. He conceded 59, picking up a couple of wickets. Khan bowled 10 overs, conceding 40. He picked up a couple of scalps.

India advanced.
