Dada-led India aren’t the (Ki)winners

India made a couple of changes to their playing eleven – Sachin Tendulkar and Debasis Mohanty made way for Yuvraj Singh and Hemang Badani. 

New Zealand made half-a-dozen changes to the (Dani)eleven that last played the Indians – Craig Spearman, Roger Twose, Chris Cairns, Scott Styris, Shayne O’Connor and Geoff Allott made way for Mathew Sinclair, Lou Vincent, Dion Nash, Vettori, Kyle Mills and Daryl Tuffey.

On winning the toss, Stephen Fleming, New Zealand’s skipper, chose to bat. Their openers didn’t get off the mark. Sinclair, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. A ball into the match, he was trapped leg before wicket by Zaheer Khan. 

New Zealand’s 50 came off 10.2 overs in 51 minutes. Fleming, whose 46-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 25. Ninety-seven balls later, he was caught by Virender Sehwag. Harbhajan Singh broke the 70-run partnership.

New Zealand’s 100 came off 24.1 overs in 105 minutes. Craig McMillan, whose 31-ball innings included a boundary, scored 17. Fifty-five balls later, he was stumped by Sameer Dighe. Yuvraj broke the 36-run stand.

New Zealand’s 150 came off 34.3 overs in 138 minutes. Vincent, who faced 33 balls, scored 16. Sixty-six balls later, he was caught by Yuvraj. Harbhajan broke the 52-run partnership. The fifth-wicket pair put on five. Chris Harris who faced four balls, scored a run. A dozen balls later, Dighe and Harbhajan ran him out.

Adam Parore, who faced 22 balls, scored nine. Forty-seven balls later, he was caught by Dighe. Badani broke the 27-run stand. Nash, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored five. Eight balls later, Khan broke the run-a-ball stand.

New Zealand’s 200 came off 48.1 overs in 197 minutes. The eighth-wicket pair put on 10. Nathan Astle, the player of the match, scored 117. His 150-ball innings included nine boundaries and the only six of the innings. A dozen balls later, Harbhajan and Dighe ran him out. 

His half-century – which included half-a-dozen boundaries – came off 73 balls in 105 minutes, and his century– which included eight boundaries and the six – came off 130 balls in 168 minutes.

Vettori, who faced eight balls, scored five. He was unbeaten, as was Mills, who faced a ball, scoring a run. India conceded 15 extras. New Zealand, who scored 211 for the loss of eight wickets off 50 overs. 

Reetinder Singh Sodhi, who faced a wicketless over, had no reason to be in seventh heaven. Ashish Nehra, who bowled seven wicketless overs, conceded 35. Sehwag bowled eight wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 31.

Badani, who bowled five overs, conceded 25. He picked up a wicket, as did Yuvraj, who bowled 10 overs, conceding 43. Khan bowled nine overs, including a maiden. He conceded 41, picking up a couple of wickets. Harbhajan bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 25, picking up a couple of wickets.

Yuvraj, whose 15-ball innings included a boundary, scored half-a-dozen. Four overs into the chase, he was trapped leg before wicket by Mills, who broke the 13-stand stand. 

The second-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Sourav Ganguly, India's skipper, scored five. His 17-ball innings included a boundary. Fourteen balls later, he was caught by Harris off the bowling of Tuffey.

Rahul Dravid, whose 36-ball innings included a boundary, scored 15. Sixty-one balls later, he was caught by Sinclair. Nash broke the 28-run partnership.

India’s 50 came off 20.1 overs in 93 minutes. Badani had no reason to be in seventh heaven – he scored a couple. Twenty-three balls later, he was caught by Parore. Nash broke the nine-run stand. The fifth-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Sehwag, who faced three balls, didn’t open his account. Three balls later, he was caught by Harris off the bowling of Nash.

Sodhi, whose 25-ball innings included a six, scored 18. Fifty-eight balls later, Harris broke the 33-run stand. India’s 100 came off 35 overs in 149 minutes. Dighe, who faced 32 balls, scored nine. Forty-nine balls later, he was caught by Nash. Harris broke the 30-run stand.

V V S Laxman, whose 103-ball innings included five boundaries, scored 60. His half-century – which included four boundaries – came off 96 balls in 140 minutes. Five balls later, he was caught by Harris. Vettori broke the run-a-ball stand.

Harbhajan, who faced a couple of balls, didn’t open his account. Seven balls later, he was caught by Harris, who broke the two-run stand. Khan, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored a couple. Three balls later, he was caught by McMillan. Vettori broke the two-run stand. Nehra, who faced a couple of balls, scored as many. He was unbeaten.

New Zealand conceded eight extras. India, who were bundled out for 127 off 41.1 overs, lost by 84 runs. Astle bowled five overs, conceding 16. Mills bowled seven overs, including a maiden. He conceded 24. He picked up a wicket. Tuffey bowled seven overs, including a couple of maidens. He had a reason to be in seventh heaven – he picked up a wicket.

Vettori bowled 8.1 overs, conceding 39. He picked up two wickets. Nash bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceding 13. He picked up three scalps, as did Harris, who bowled eight overs, including a maiden. He conceded 23.
