Dada cap‘ton’s; The IndianSAre beaten

India made seven changes to their playing eleven – V V S Laxman, Hemang Badani, Reetinder Singh Sodhi, Sameer Dighe, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan and Ashish Nehra made way for Sachin Tendulkar, Ajit Agarkar, a couple of One-day International debutants (Shiv Sunder Das and Deep Dasgupta), Venkatesh Prasad, Anil Kumble and Javagal Srinath.

South Africa made five changes to the (N)eleven that last played the Indians – Andrew Hall, Boeta Dippenaar, Nicky Boje, Roger Telemachus and Allan Donald made way for Herschelle Gibbs, Neil McKenzie, Justin Kemp, Andre and Makhaya Ntini.

On winning the toss, Shaun Pollock, South Africa’s skipper, inserted the Indians. Their 50 – which included eight boundaries – came off 10.2 overs in 48 minutes. While Sourav Ganguly, India’s skipper, scored 29, Tendulkar scored 16. South Africa conceded seven extras.

India’s 100 – which included 13 boundaries – came off 20.4 overs in 93 minutes. While Ganguly scored 61, Tendulkar scored 32, and the hosts conceded eight extras.

Ganguly scored 127. His 126-ball innings included 14 boundaries and five sixes. His 50 – which included nine boundaries – came off 60 balls in 75 minutes. Two hundred and twelve balls into the match, he was caught by Mark Boucher. Kemp broke the 193-run partnership.

Rahul Dravid had no reason to be in seventh heaven – he scored just a run. Fifteen balls later, he was caught by McKenzie. Nel broke the five-run stand.

India’s 200 came off 229 overs in 165 minutes. Yuvraj Singh, whose 18-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 14. Forty balls later, he was caught by Gary Kirsten, the player of the match. Lance Klusener broke the 44-run stand.

Virender Sehwag faced five balls, scoring as many. A dozen balls later, he was caught by Gibbs. Pollock broke the 15-run stand. Tendulkar, whose 129-ball innings included nine boundaries, scored 101. Eight balls later, he was caught by Gibbs. Jacques Kallis broke the six-run stand.

Agarkar, whose 11-ball innings included a boundary, scored a dozen. He was unbeaten, as was Das, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scoring five.

South Africa conceded 14 extras. India scored 279 for the loss of five wickets off 50 overs. Ntini, who bowled seven wicketless overs, conceded 33. Kemp, who bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceded 40. He picked up a wicket.

Kallis, who bowled eight overs, conceded 45. He picked up a wicket. Klusener, who bowled nine overs, conceded 54. He picked up a wicket. Pollock, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 56. He picked up a wicket. Nel bowled 10 overs, included a maiden. He conceded 47, picking up a wicket.

Kirsten, whose 155-ball innings included 13 boundaries, scored 133. He was unbeaten. Gibbs, whose 45-ball innings included 10 boundaries, scored 48. A hundred and six balls into the chase, he was caught by Dasgupta. Srinath broke the 114-run partnership.

Kallis, whose 56-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 39. A hundred and fourteen balls later, Agarkar broke the 93-run partnership. Jonty Rhodes, whose 19-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 20. Thirty-two balls later, Srinath broke the 35-run stand.

Klusener, whose 12-ball innings included a couple of sixes, scored 17. Twenty-eight balls later, he was caught by Dravid. Prasad broke the run-a-ball stand. McKenzie, whose run-a-ball innings included a boundary, scored eight. He was unbeaten.

India conceded 15 extras. South Africa scored 280 for the loss of four wickets off 48.2 overs, winning by half-a-dozen wickets with 10 balls to spare.

Ganguly, who bowled two wicketless overs, conceded 12. Tendulkar, who bowled nine wicketless overs, conceded 51. Kumble, who bowled 10 wicketless overs, conceded 54.

Prasad, who bowled 7.2 overs, conceded 51. He picked up a wicket, as did Agarkar, who bowled 10 overs, conceding 45. Srinath, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 59. He picked up a couple of scalps.
