Ganguly-led India leave SL disappointed

India made just one change to their playing eleven – Amay Khurasiya made way for Sourav Ganguly (who was leading the team). Sri Lanka made no changes to the eleven that last played the Indians.

On winning the toss, Sanath Jayasuriya, Sri Lanka’s skipper, inserted the Indians, whose openers didn’t get off the mark. Virender Sehwag who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. A ball into the match, he was trapped leg before wicket by Chaminda Vaas.

Ganguly, who faced 16 balls, didn’t get off the (Ku)mark. Twenty-seven balls later, he was caught by Sangakkara. Needless to say, Vaas was in seventh heaven.

V V S Laxman, whose 29-ball innings included a boundary, scored 10. Twenty-seven balls later, he was caught by Jayasuriya. Dilhara Fernando broke the 24-run stand.

Hemang Badani, who faced 11 balls, scored a couple. Twenty-five balls (Mahe)later, he was caught by Jayawardene. Needless to say, Fernando was in seventh heaven.

While India’s 50 came off 14.5 overs in 80 minutes, their 100 came off 27 overs in 125 minutes.

Rahul Dravid, whose 88-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 47. A hundred and thirty-one balls later, he was stumped by Romesh Kaluwitharana. Jayasuriya broke the 102-run partnership.

Yuvraj Singh, the player of the match, scored 98. His innings included half-a-dozen boundaries and the only six of the innings. He was unbeaten.

India’s 150 came off 37 overs in 157 minutes. Reetinder Singh Sodhi, whose 37-ball innings included a boundary, scored 30. Sixty-two balls later, Muttiah Muralitharan broke the 57-run partnership.

India’s 200 came off 45.5 overs in 190 minutes. Sameer Dighe faced three balls, scoring as many. Four balls later, he was caught by Kaluwitharana. Fernando broke the three-run stand.

Harbhajan Singh, who faced three balls, scored four. His runs came by way of a boundary. Eight balls later, Muralitharan broke the 13-run stand. Zaheer Khan, who faced eight balls, scored three. He was unbeaten.

Sri Lanka conceded 30 extras. India scored 227 for the loss of eight wickets off 50 overs. Suresh Perera, who bowled three wicketless overs, conceded 20. Russel Arnold, who bowled four wicketless overs, conceded 20.

Kumar Dharmasena, who bowled eight wicketless overs, conceded 39. Jayasuriya, who bowled seven overs, conceded 28. He picked up a wicket. Vaas bowled nine overs, including a maiden. He conceded 35, picking up a couple of wickets.

Muralitharan bowled 10 overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 29, picking up a couple of wickets. Fernando bowled nine overs, including a maiden. He conceded 47, picking up three scalps.

Sri Lanka’s openers put on half-a-dozen. Kaluwitharana, who faced five balls, didn’t open his account. Ten balls into the chase, Harbhajan Singh ran him out.

Marvan Atapattu, who faced five balls, scored a run. Five balls later, he was caught by Dighe. Khan broke the one-run stand.

Jayasuriya, whose 19-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 10. Thirty balls later, he was caught by Dravid. Ashish Nehra broke the 17-run stand.

Sri Lanka’s 50 came off 15.2 overs in 79 minutes. Arnold, whose 45-ball innings included a boundary, scored 21. Eighty-three balls later, he was caught by Ganguly, who broke the 43-run stand.

Jayawardene, whose 78-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 34. Thirty-seven balls later, Ganguly broke the 26-run stand.

Sri Lanka’s 100 came off 30 overs in 142 minutes. Sangakkara, whose 30-ball innings included a boundary, scored 18. Twenty-eight balls later, Nehra broke the 16-run stand.

Sri Lanka’s 150 came off 41 overs in 189 minutes. Perera, whose 47-ball innings included a boundary and a six, scored 30. Fifty balls later, he was caught by Khan. Harbhajan broke the 42-run stand.

The eighth-wicket pair put on half-a-dozen. Dharmasena, whose 27-ball innings included a boundary, scored 22. Ten balls later, Dravid and Dighe ran him out.

Vaas, whose 11-ball innings included a six, scored 13. Sixteen balls later, he was caught by Harbhajan. Nehra broke the 21-run stand.

Muralitharan, who faced 14 balls, scored 11. Half-a-dozen balls later, he was caught by the substitute, Ajit Agarkar. Khan broke the three-run stand. The last man, who faced three balls, scored (Fernan)do. He was unbeaten.

India conceded 19 extras. Sri Lanka, who were dismissed for 181 off 45.5 overs, lost by 46 runs. Sehwag, who bowled three overs, conceded 19. He was wicketless, as was Sodhi, who bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceding 34.

Harbhajan, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 30. He picked up a wicket. Khan bowled eight overs, including a maiden. He conceded 24, picking up a couple of wickets.

Ganguly bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 31, picking up a couple of wickets. His ninth over – the 30th of the innings – was a seven-ball over, called by Sri Lankan umpire Gamini Silva. Nehra, who bowled 8.5 overs, conceded 35. He picked up three scalps.
