India made three
changes to their playing eleven – Yuvraj Singh, Vijay Dahiya and Javagal
Srinath made way for Virender Sehwag, Sameer Dighe and One-day International
debutant Ashish Nehra.
Zimbabwe made half-a-dozen changes to the eleven that (Nka)last played the Indians – Trevor Madondo, Gavin Rennie, Andy Flower, Douglas Marillier, Mluleki and Bryan Murphy made way for Dion Ebrahim, Stuart Carlisle, Dirk Viljoen, Andy Blignaut, Travis Friend and Tatenda Taibu.
On winning the toss, Sourav Ganguly, India’s skipper, inserted the hosts, whose openers didn’t get off the mark. Alastair Campbell, who faced a couple of balls, didn’t open his account. A couple of balls into the match, he was caught by Dighe off the bowling of Nehra.
Carlisle, who faced 22 balls, scored half-a-dozen. Twenty-nine balls later, he was caught by V V S Laxman. Zaheer Khan broke the 15-run stand. Grant Flower, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored a boundary. His runs came by way of a boundary. Five balls later, Khan broke the run-a-ball stand.
Guy Whittall, whose 17-ball innings included a boundary, had no reason to be in seventh heaven – 31 balls later, he was caught by Rahul Dravid. Ajit Agarkar broke the 15-run stand. Viljoen, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored a run. Nine balls later, he was caught by Ganguly. Nehra broke the four-run stand.

India’s 50 came off 12.1 overs in 52 minutes. While Tendulkar, the player of the match, was batting on 33 then, Badani was batting on 15.
