Dada cap‘ton’s; India beat SA

While India made no changes to their playing eleven, South Africa made a couple of changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Henry Williams and Nantie Hayward made way for Pieter Strydom and Steve Elworthy.

On winning the toss, Hansie Cronje, South Africa’s skipper, chose to bat. Their openers didn’t get off the mark. Gary Kirsten, who faced five balls, didn’t open his account. Five balls into the match, he was dismissed by Ajit Agarkar.

Jacques Kallis, whose 27-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 18. Forty-four balls later, he was caught by Sameer Dighe. Agarkar broke the 41-run stand. Herschelle Gibbs, whose 28-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 27. Twenty-three ballS(uni)later, he was caught by Dighe. Joshi broke the 18-run stand.

Lance Klusener, whose 33-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 19. Forty-seven balls later, he was caught by Dighe. Sachin Tendulkar broke the 29-run stand. Nicky Boje, whose 44-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 28. Eighty-nine balls later, he was caught by Dighe. Thirunavukkarasu Kumaran broke the 70-run partnership.

Cronje, whose 86-ball (Rob)innings included seven boundaries and the only six of the innings, scored 71. Twenty-nine balls later, he was caught by Singh. Joshi broke the 20-run stand.

Shaun Pollock, who faced 20 balls, had no reason to be in seventh heaven – 10 balls later, Joshi broke the four-run stand. Mark Boucher, who faced 21 balls, scored 14. He was unbeaten.

The eighth-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Derek Crookes, who faced a couple of balls, didn’t open his account. A couple of balls later, he was caught by Sourav Ganguly, India’s skipper and the player of the match, off the bowling of Joshi.

Strydom, who faced five balls, scored a run. Seven balls later, he was trapped (Kumb)leg before wicket by Anil, who broke the three-run stand. Elworthy, who faced 14 balls, scored three. Twenty-eight balls later, he was caught by Agarkar, who broke the 14-run stand.

India conceded 11 extras. South Africa were dismissed for 199 off 47.2 overs. Rahul Dravid, who bowled a wicketless over, conceded nine. Kumaran, who bowled eight overs, conceded 37. He picked up a wicket.

Tendulkar, who bowled nine overs, conceded 39. He picked up a wicket. Kumble, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 36. He picked up a wicket. Agarkar bowled 9.2 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 34, picking up three wickets. Joshi bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 38, picking up four scalps.

Ganguly, whose 139-ball innings included 10 boundaries and four sixes, scored 105. He was unbeaten. Tendulkar, whose 31-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 21. Fifty balls into the chase, he was caught by Cronje. Pollock broke the 33-run stand. The second-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. 

Joshi, who faced a couple of balls, didn’t open his account. Half-a-dozen balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Crookes. Dravid, whose 59-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 36. A hundred and nineteen balls later, he was caught by Gibbs. Boje broke the 88-run partnership.

Mohammad Azharuddin, whose 45-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 29. Ninety-six balls later, Cronje broke the 73-run partnership. Jadeja, who faced nine balls, scored a couple. He was unbeaten.

South Africa conceded 10 extras. India, who scored 203 for the loss of four wickets off 47.1 overs, won by six wickets with 17 balls to spare. Elworthy bowled three wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 17.

Kallis bowled five wicketless overs, conceding 19. Strydom bowled 10 wicketless overs, conceding 57. Cronje bowled 1.1 overs, including a maiden. He conceded four, picking up a wicket.

Pollock bowled eight overs, conceding 25. He picked up a wicket. Crookes and Boje bowled 10 overs, including two maidens, each, picking up a scalp apiece. While the former conceded 44, the latter conceded 34.

The Indians led the five-match series 2-0.
