The iSLanderS(oura)Vanquish the Indians again

While India made no changes to their playing eleven, Sri Lanka made a couple of changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Aravinda de Silva and Tillakaratne Dilshan made way for Avishka Gunawardene and Kumar Sangakkara.

Sourav Ganguly, India’s skipper, won the toss, choosing to bat. His 24-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 17. Thirty-nine balls into the match, he was caught by Gunawardene. Chaminda Vaas broke the 33-run stand.

India’s 50 came off 10.5 overs. The second-wicket pair put on (Sana)thirty-one. Rahul Dravid, whose 21-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 16. Forty-six balls after Ganguly’s dismissal, Jayasuriya, Sri Lanka’s skipper, ran him out.

The third-wicket pair put on 23. Vinod Kambli, whose 21-ball innings included a boundary, scored a dozen. Twenty-nine balls later, Jayasuriya and Romesh Kaluwitharana ran him out. India’s 100 came off 22.5 overs. Yuvraj Singh, who faced 15 balls, had no reason to be in seventh heaven – 23 balls later, Muttiah Muralitharan broke the 15-run stand.

While India’s 150 came off 35.1 overs, their 200 came off 45 overs. Singh, whose 61-ball innings included a boundary, scored 35. A hundred and thirty-three balls later, he was caught by Marvan Atapattu. Muralitharan broke the 100-run partnership.

The sixth-wicket pair put on three. Tendulkar, the player of the match, scored 101. His 140-ball (Sach)innings included three boundaries and the only six of the innings. While his 50 – which included a couple of boundaries – came off 71 balls, his 100 – which included all the boundaries and the six – came off 138 balls. Four balls later, Gunawardene ran him out.

Anil Kumble, whose 13-ball innings included a boundary, scored 11. Seventeen balls later, Vaas broke the run-a-ball stand. Although he was unbeaten, Ajit Agarkar, who faced seven balls, had no reason to be in seventh heaven.

The eighth-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Vijay Dahiya, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. The next ball, Vaas ran him out. Zaheer Khan, who faced a ball, scored a run. He was unbeaten.

Sri Lanka conceded 17 extras. India scored 224 for the loss of eight wickets off 50 overs. Russel Arnold, who bowled four wicketless overs, conceded 17. Kaushalya Weeraratne, who bowled eight wicketless overs, conceded 41. Jayasuriya, who bowled nine wicketless overs, conceded 36.

Nuwan Zoysa bowled 10 wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 48. Vaas, who bowled nine overs, conceded 40. He picked up a couple of wickets, as did Muralitharan, who bowled 10 overs, conceding 36.

Gunawardene, whose run-a-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored nine. Eleven balls later, he was caught by Dahiya. Venkatesh Prasad broke the 17-run stand. Atapattu, who faced three balls, didn’t get off the mark. Nine balls later, he was caught by Dahiya. Prasad broke the four-run stand.

Jayasuriya, whose 53-ball innings included seven boundaries, scored 48. Eighty-eight balls later, he was caught by Yuvraj. Agarkar broke the 73-run partnership. 

Sri Lanka’s 100 came off 19.1 overs. Jayawardene, whose 57-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 38. Twenty-six balls (Mahe)later, Kumble broke the nine-run stand. Sangakkara, whose 64-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 40. He was unbeaten.

While Sri Lanka’s 150 came off 30 overs, their 200 came off 39.2 overs. Arnold, whose 70-ball innings included seven boundaries, scored 59. His 50 – which included half-a-dozen. boundaries – came off 60 balls A hundred and eleven balls later, he was caught by Dahiya. Agarkar broke the 95-run partnership. 

Kaluwitharana, whose 12-ball innings included a boundary, scored nine. He was unbeaten. India conceded 22 extras. Sri Lanka, who scored 225 for the loss of five wickets off 43,5 overs, won by five wickets with 37 balls to spare.

Ganguly, who bowled a wicketless over, conceded 13. Singh, who bowled three wicketless overs, conceded 11. Tendulkar, who bowled five wicketless overs, conceded 22. Khan, who bowled 8.5 wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 36.

Kumble bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 50, picking up a wicket. Prasad and Agarkar bowled eight overs each, picking up a couple of scalps apiece. While the former, whose spell included a maiden, conceded 48, the latter conceded 39.
