England’S(oura)victory over India is sweet

While India made no changes to their playing eleven, England made one changes to their playing eleven – Ashley Giles made way for Ben Hollioake. On winning the toss, Sourav Ganguly, India’s skipper, inserted the visitors.

Marcus Trescothick, whose 20-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 13. Thirty-one balls into the match, he was caught by Dinesh Mongia. Ajit Agarkar broke the 24-run stand.

Nick Knight, whose 26-ball innings included a boundary, scored 14. (Srina)Thirty-one balls later, he was caught by Harbhajan Singh. Javagal broke the 21-run stand. Nasser, England’s skipper, scored 46. His 54-ball (Hussa)innings included four boundaries. Seventy-six balls later, he was caught by Agarkar. Ganguly broke the 69-run partnership.

The fourth-wicket pair put on 62. Michael Vaughan, whose 80-ball innings included five boundaries, scored 63. Seventy-nine balls later, Hemang Badani and Harbhajan ran him out. Collingwood, the P(au)layer of the match, scored 71. His 78-ball innings included three boundaries and a couple of sixes. He was unbeaten.

Andrew Flintoff, who faced nine balls, scored five. Fourteen balls later, Harbhajan broke the run-a-ball stand. Hollioake*, who faced five balls, didn’t get off the mark. Anil Kumble had a reason to be in seventh heaven – he broke the three-run stand.

The seventh-wicket pair put on 51. Jeremy Snape, whose 30-ball innings included a boundary, scored 22. Fifty-five balls later, Agarkar ran him out. James Foster faced three balls, scoring as many. He was unbeaten.

India conceded 13 extras. England scored 250 for the loss of seven wickets off 50 overs. Virender Sehwag, who faced a couple of overs, conceded 11. He was wicketless, as was Sachin Tendulkar, who faced half-a-dozen overs, conceding 35. Ganguly, who bowled five overs, conceded 29. He picked up a wicket.

Agarkar bowled eight overs, including a maiden. He conceded 46, picking up a wicket. Srinath, who bowled nine overs, conceded 41. He picked up a wicket. His first over was a five-ball over.

Kumble and Harbhajan bowled 10 overs each, picking up a scalp apiece. While the former conceded 47, the latter conceded 35.

Ganguly, whose 15-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 14. Twenty-three balls into the chase, he was caught by Knight. Matthew Hoggard broke the 20-run stand. The second-wicket pair put on 79. Tendulkar, whose 60-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries, scored 45. A hundred and six balls later, Hollioake ran him out.

The third-wicket pair put on 11. V V S Laxman, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored three. Sixteen balls later, Collingwood and Foster ran him out. Sehwag, who faced 10 balls, scored five. Twenty balls later, he was caught by Knight. Gough broke the 11-run stand.

The fifth-wicket pair put on nine. Mongia, whose 82-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 49. Sixteen balls later, Hoggard and Foster ran him out. Badani, whose 17-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 13. Twenty-one balls later, he was caught by Flintoff. Hollioake broke the 17-run stand.

Ajay, whose 40-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 30. Thirty-three balls later, he was (Ra)trapped leg before wicket by Flintoff, who broke the 32-run stand. Harbhajan scored half-a-dozen. His run-a-ball innings included a boundary. Half-a-dozen balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Snape, who broke the seven-run stand.

Kumble, whose 26-ball innings included a boundary, scored 20. Thirty-nine balls later, he was caught by Collingwood. Gough broke the 38-run stand. Agarkar, whose 26-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 29. A dozen balls later, he was caught by Foster. Gough broke the 10-run stand.

Although he was unbeaten, Srinath, who faced eight balls, had no reason to be in seventh heaven. England conceded 13 extras. India, who were dismissed for 234 off 48.4 overs, lost by 16 runs.

Collingwood, who bowled five wicketless overs, conceded 24. Hollioake, who bowled seven overs, conceded 34. He picked up a wicket. Snape, who bowled eight overs, conceded 39. He picked up a wicket.

Hoggard, who bowled nine overs, conceded 53. He picked up a wicket. The 45th over of the innings – his ninth – was a seven-ball over. Flintoff, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 35. He picked up a wicket. Gough, who bowled 9.4 overs, conceded 46. He picked up three scalps. 

England levelled the six-match series 1-1.
