The Indians (Soura)vanquish hosts Kenya

India (Moham)made five changes to their playing eleven – Azharuddin, Ajay Jadeja, Nayan Mongia, Thirunavukkarasu Kumaran and Amit Bhandari made way for Vinod Kambli, three One-day International debutants (Yuvraj Singh, Vijay Dahiya and Zaheer Khan) and Venkatesh Prasad.

Kenya made a couple of changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Alpesh Vadher and Josephat Ababu made way for Jimmy Kamande and Lameck Onyango. On winning the toss, Sourav Ganguly, India’s skipper, inserted the hosts.

Kennedy Otieno, who faced eight balls, scored half-a-dozen. A dozen balls into the match, he was caught by Ganguly. Ajit Agarkar broke the 16-run stand. Kamande, whose 40-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 18. Seventy-six balls later, he was caught by Rahul Dravid. Anil Kumble, the player of the match, broke the 38-run stand.

Steve Tikolo, who faced 11 balls, scored five. Twenty-one balls later, he was trapped (Kumb)leg before wicket by the leggie, who broke the 10-run stand. Ravindu Shah, whose 93-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries and a six, scored 60. A hundred and nineteen balls later, he was caught by Dahiya. Prasad broke the 81-run partnership.

Maurice Odumbe, Kenya’s skipper, scored 51. His 97-ball innings included a couple of boundaries. Twenty-three balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Prasad, who broke the 13-run stand. Thomas Odoyo, whose 34-ball innings included three boundaries and a six, scored 35. He was unbeaten.

Mohammad Sheikh, who faced three balls, didn’t open his account. Four balls later, Khan broke the one-run stand. The seventh-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Hitesh, who faced a couple of balls, (Mo)didn’t open his account. A couple of balls later, he was dismissed by Khan.

Tony Suji had no reason to be in seventh heaven – he scored just a couple. Fifteen balls later, he was caught by Dahiya. Agarkar broke the run-a-ball stand. His brother, whose 17-ball (Mart)innings included a boundary, scored 14. Twenty-six balls later, he was caught by Ganguly. Khan broke the 32-run stand.

Onyango, who faced a ball, didn’t get off the mark. He was unbeaten. India conceded 17 extras. Kenya scored 208 for the loss of nine wickets off 50 overs. Yuvraj bowled four overs, including a maiden. He conceded 16. He was wicketless, as was Sachin Tendulkar, who bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceded 25.

Prasad, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 47. He picked up a couple of wickets. Agarkar and Kumble bowled 10 overs, including a maiden, each, picking up a couple of wickets apiece. While the former conceded 40, the latter conceded 22. Khan, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 48. He picked up three scalps.

Tendulkar, whose 35-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 25. Twelve overs into the chase, he was trapped leg before wicket by Tony, who broke the 47-run stand. While India's 50 came off 13.5 overs, their 100 came off 26.1 overs.

Ganguly, whose 101-ball innings included seven boundaries and a couple of sixes, scored 66. Nineteen overs later, he was stumped by Otieno. Odumbe broke the 88-run partnership. While India's 150 came off 33.3 overs, their 200 came off 41.3 overs.

Dravid, whose 87-ball innings included seven boundaries, scored 68. He was unbeaten, as was Kambli, who scored 39. His 33-ball innings included seven boundaries. Kenya conceded 11 extras. India, who scored 209 for the loss of two wickets off 42.3 overs, won by eight wickets with 45 balls to spare.

Tikolo and Shah bowled a couple of wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 13, the latter conceded 10. Sheikh bowled four wicketless overs, conceding 27. Onyango bowled 4.3 wicketless overs, conceding 34.

Odoyo bowled half-a-dozen wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 18. Martin bowled 10 wicketless overs, including two maidens. He conceded 30. Odumbe bowled four overs, conceding 18. He picked up a wicket, as did Tony, who bowled 10 overs, conceding 56.

India advanced.
