The IndianSAren’t (Soura)victorious; Win series

India (Moham)made three Ch(opr)anges to their playing eleven – Azharuddin, Sunil Joshi and Ajit Agarkar made way for One-day International debutant Sridharan Sriram, Nikhil and Venkatesh Prasad.

South Africa made three changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Jacques Kallis, Nicky Boje and Shaun Pollock made way for Neil McKenzie, Derek Crookes and Henry Williams.


On winning the toss, Sourav Ganguly, India's skipper, inserted the visitors, whose openers put on nine. Gary Kirsten had no reason to be in seventh heaven – he scored just a run. Eleven ballS(ach)into the match, Tendulkar ran him out.


McKenzie, whose 18-(Sa)ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 13. Twenty-seven balls later, he was caught by Karim. Anil Kumble broke the 33-run stand. Crookes, whose seven-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 14. Eleven balls later, Kumble broke the 24-run stand.


Hansie Cronje, South Africa’s skipper, scored 38. His 31-ball innings included three boundaries and a couple of sixes. Thirty-nine balls later, he was caught by Rahul Dravid. Chopra broke the 60-run partnership.


The fifth-wicket pair put on 35. Herschelle Gibbs, whose 53-ball innings included 13 boundaries and a six, scored 74. Thirty-six balls later, Sriram ran him out. Dale, whose 44-ball (Benkenste)innings included a boundary, scored 24. Seventy-one balls later, Tendulkar broke the 44-run stand.


Mark Boucher, whose 92-ball innings included three boundaries and a six, scored 68. A hundred and four balls later, he was caught by Kumble. Prasad broke the 114-run partnership. Lance Klusener, the player of the match, scored 75. His 58-ball innings included eight boundaries and three sixes. He was unbeaten, as was Pieter Strydom, who didn’t face a ball.


India conceded 13 extras. South Africa scored 320 for the loss of seven wickets off 50 overs. Ganguly and Robin Singh bowled a wicketless over apiece. While the former conceded 17, the latter conceded half-a-dozen.


Srinath and Sriram bowled half-a-dozen wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 65, the latter conceded 36. Prasad bowled half-a-dozen overs, including a maiden. He conceded 46, picking up a wicket.


Chopra and Tendulkar bowled 10 overs each, picking up a wicket apiece. While the former conceded 57, the latter conceded 31. Kumble who bowled 10 overs, conceded 61. He picked up a couple of scalps.


Ganguly, whose 11-ball innings included a boundary, scored half-a-dozen. Seventeen balls into the chase, he was caught by Steve Elworthy. Williams broke the 13-run stand.


Tendulkar, whose 89-ball innings included seven boundaries and four sixes, scored 93. A hundred and forty-six balls later, he was caught by Elworthy. Crookes broke the 180-run partnership. His 50, which came off 37 balls, included five boundaries and three sixes.


The third-wicket pair D(rav)idn't get off the mark. The Wall, whose 70-ball innings included 11 boundaries, scored 79. The next ball, Strydom and Crookes ran him out. Sriram, whose 15-ball innings included a boundary, scored a dozen. Thirty-seven balls later, he was caught by Boucher. Elworthy broke the 21-run stand.


Jadeja, who faced 28 balls, scored 10. Thirteen balls later, Elworthy had a reason to be in seventh heaven. Srinath, whose 18-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 20. Thirty-five balls later, he was caught by Strydom. Klusener broke the 38-run stand.


Karim, whose 17-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 22. Twenty-seven balls later, he was caught by Klusener, who broke the 31-run stand. Singh, whose 35-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 29. Nine balls later, he was caught by Cronje. Klusener broke the 14-run stand.


The ninth-wicket pair put on half-a-dozen. Kumble, whose four-ball innings included a boundary, scored five. Half-a-dozen balls later, Gibbs ran him out. The last-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Chopra, who faced eight balls, scored three. A couple of balls later, Pollock, the substitute, and Boucher ran him out.


Prasad, who faced a couple of balls, didn’t open his account. He was unbeaten. South Africa conceded 31 extras. India, who were dismissed for 310 off 48.5 overs, lost by 10 runs. McKenzie bowled a wicketless ball. Cronje, who bowled 9.5 wicketless overs, conceded 62. Strydom bowled 10 wicketless overs, conceding 47.


Williams bowled 1.5 overs, conceding 11. He picked up a wicket, as did Crookes, who bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 69. 


Elworthy bowled eight overs, conceding 50. He picked up two wickets. His seventh over – the 38th over of India’s innings – was a five-ball over. Klusener bowled nine overs, conceding 59. He picked up three scalps.


India won the five-match series 3-2.
