The AussieS(oura)vanquish India, level series

India made a couple of changes to their playing eleven – Virender Sehwag and Ajit Agarkar made way for One-day International debutant Dinesh Mongia and Sunil Joshi. Australia made three changes to their playing eleven – Ricky Ponting, Ian Harvey and Shane Warne made way for Darren Lehmann, Andrew Symonds and Nathan Bracken.

On winning the toss, Sourav Ganguly, India’s skipper, inserted the visitors. He faced 15 balls, scoring four. (McGra)Thirty-nine balls into the match, Glenn broke the 29-run stand. Tendulkar, whose 29-ball (Sach)innings included half-a-dozen boundaries and a six, scored 32. Eight balls later, he was caught by Lehmann. Damien Fleming broke the run-a-ball stand.

India’s 50 came off 11.2 overs. The third-wicket pair put on 23. Rahul Dravid, whose 23-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 13. Forty balls later, Michael Bevan and Damien Martyn ran him out.

While India’s 100 came off 24.5 overs, their 150 came off 33.1 overs. The fourth-wicket pair put on 93. V V S Laxman, whose 86-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 51. His 50 came off 83 balls. A hundred and twenty-two balls later, Steve Waugh, Australia's skipper, ran him out.

The fifth-wicket pair put on four. Mongia, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored a couple. Eight balls later, Mark Waugh (the player of the match), Steve and Fleming ran him out. Vijay Dahiya had no reason to be in seventh heaven – he scored a couple. Thirteen balls later, he was caught by Bracken. Fleming broke the five-run stand.

India’s 200 came off 43.3 overs. Joshi, whose 23-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 19. Forty-eight balls later, he was caught by Mark. Bracken broke the 59-run partnership. Hemang, whose (Bada)ninety-eight-ball innings included 10 boundaries and a couple of sixes, scored 100. Fifteen balls later, he was caught by Lehmann. Bracken broke the 18-run stand.

The Tamil Nadu southpaw's 50 – which came off 58 balls – included half-a-dozen boundaries and a six. His 100 came off 97 balls.

Zaheer Khan, whose 10-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 15. Five balls later, McGrath broke the run-a-ball stand. Harbhajan Singh, who faced a ball, scored a run. He was unbeaten, as was Javagal Srinath, who faced a couple of balls, scoring three.

Australia conceded half-a-dozen extras. India scored 248 for the loss of nine wickets off 50 overs. Mark, who bowled three wicketless overs, conceded 22. Martyn, who bowled seven wicketless overs, conceded 41. Symonds, who bowled 10 wicketless overs, conceded 41.

Bracken, McGrath and Fleming bowling 10 overs, including a maiden, each, picking up a couple of scalps apiece. They conceded 54, 49 and 39, respectively.

While Australia’s 50 came off 10.5 overs, their 100 came off 18.1 overs. Mark, whose 138-ball innings included 15 boundaries and a six, scored 133. While his 50 – which included eight boundaries – came off as many balls, his 100 – which included 13 boundaries – came off 102 balls. He was unbeaten.

Matthew Hayden, whose 81-ball innings included five boundaries and a six, scored 57. His 50 – which came off 67 balls – including five boundaries and a six. A hundred and fifty-five balls later, he was caught by Ganguly. Khan broke the 143-run partnership.

Australia's 150 came off 26.5 overs. The second-wicket pair put on 20. Lehmann, who faced four balls, scored a run. Twenty balls later, the substitute, Yuvraj Singh, and Dahiya ran him out. Australia’s 200 came off 37 overs. Bevan, whose 52-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 33. He was unbeaten.

India conceded 25 extras. Australia, who scored 249 for the loss of a couple of wickets off 45.1 overs, won by eight wickets with 29 balls to spare. Ganguly bowled three wicketless overs, conceding 17. Srinath bowled seven wicketless overs, conceding 33.

Joshi bowled 9.1 wicketless overs, conceding 54. Tendulkar and Harbhajan bowled 10 wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 59, the latter conceded 46. Khan bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceded 26. He picked up a wicket.

The five-match series was levelled 1-1.
