Zimbabwe (Azh)are beaten by India

While India made no changes to their playing eleven, Zimbabwe made three changes to the eleven that (Nka)last played the Indians – Trevor Madondo, John Rennie and Mluleki made way for Grant Flower, Neil Johnson and Eddo Brandes.

On winning the toss, Mohammad Azharuddin, India's skipper, inserted Zimbabwe, whose openers put on 44. Alastair Campbell, their skipper, scored 25. His 32-ball innings included three boundaries. Sixty-three balls into the match, Ajit Agarkar ran him out.

Grant, whose 39-ball innings included a boundary, scored 17. Eight balls later, he was trapped (Kumb)leg before wicket by Anil, who broke the three-run stand. Johnson, who faced three balls, scored as many. Three balls later, Nikhil Chopra broke the two-run stand.

Murray Goodwin, who faced 23 balls, scored 14. Fifty balls later, he was caught by Robin Singh. Chopra broke the 23-run stand. Andy Flower, whose 35-ball innings included a boundary, scored 10. Nineteen balls later, he was caught by Kumble. Sunil Joshi broke the eight-run stand.

Craig Evans, who faced 20 balls, scored eight. Ten balls later, Joshi broke the three-run stand. Craig Wishart, who faced 41 balls, scored 25. Ninety-six balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by the (Kumb)leggie, who broke the 68-run partnership.

Heath Streak, whose 71-ball innings included three boundaries and a couple of sixes, scored 59. (Srina)Thirty-two balls later, he was caught by Sourav Ganguly. Javagal broke the 24-run stand. Although his innings included a six, Brandes wasn’t in seventh heaven – he scored 11. Sixteen balls later, Agarkar broke the 15-run stand.

The last-wicket pair put on half-a-dozen. Paul Strang, who faced 28 balls, scored a dozen. A couple of balls later, Nayan Mongia ran him out. Andy Whittall, whose two-ball innings included a boundary, scored five. He was unbeaten.

The Indians conceded seven extras. Zimbabwe were dismissed for 196 off 49.5 overs. Sachin Tendulkar, who bowled a wicketless over, conceded four. Agarkar, who bowled 9.5 overs, conceded 57. He picked up a wicket.

Srinath, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 37. He picked up a wicket. Joshi, who bowled nine overs, conceded 43. He picked up a couple of wickets. Kumble and Chopra bowled 10 overs each, picking up a couple of scalps apiece. While the former conceded 31, the latter conceded 21.

Ganguly, whose 49-ball innings included five boundaries, scored 28. Thirteen overs into the chase, he was stumped by Andy Flower. Strang broke the 62-run partnership. Tendulkar, the player of the match, scored 118. His 112-ball innings included 14 boundaries and a couple of sixes. He was unbeaten.

Mongia had no reason to be in seventh heaven – he scored just a run. Nine balls later, he was caught by Johnson. Strang broke the seven-run stand. Azharuddin, who faced 56 balls, scored 28. A hundred and twelve balls later, he was caught by Johnson. Strang broke the 92-run partnership.

Ajay Jadeja, whose 25-ball innings included a boundary, scored a dozen. He was unbeaten. Zimbabwe conceded 10 extras. India, who scored 197 for the loss of three wickets off 40.4 overs, won by seven wickets with 56 balls to spare.

Whittall, who bowled three wicketless overs, conceded 30. Evans, who bowled four wicketless overs, conceded 18. Streak, who bowled five wicketless overs, conceded 33.

Brandes (whose spell included a maiden) and Johnson bowled half-a-dozen wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 26, the latter conceded 25. Goodwin, who bowled 6.4 wicketless overs, conceded 32. Strang bowled 10 overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 32, picking up three scalps.
