The Jadeja-led Indians are cliniK(eny)al

India made just one change to their playing eleven – Azharuddin (Moham)made way for fellow Hyderabadi V V S Laxman. Kenya (Moham)made three changes to their eleven – Edward Odumbe, David Tikolo and Rajab Ali made way for Ravindu Shah, Tony Suji and Sheikh. On winning the toss, Ajay Jadeja, India’s skipper, inserted the visitors.

Kennedy Otieno, who faced half-a-dozen balls, didn’t get off the mark. Seventeen balls into the match, Ajit Agarkar had a reason to be in seventh heaven. Dipak Chudasama, whose 40-ball (Rob)innings included five boundaries, scored 32. Sixty-nine balls later, Singh broke the 64-run stand.

Tikolo, whose 92-ball innings included five boundaries and the only six of the innings, scored S(t)eventy-seven. A hundred and fifteen balls, he was caught by Laxman. Rahul Sanghvi broke the 82-run stand. Hitesh Modi, whose 19-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 17. Twenty-seven balls later, Sanghvi broke the 23-run stand.

Maurice Odumbe, whose 86-ball innings included a boundary, scored 47. Twenty balls later, he was caught by M S K Prasad. Agarkar broke the 11-run stand. Thomas Odoyo, who faced eight balls, scored a run. Twenty-one balls later, he was caught by Rahul Dravid. Hrishikesh Kanitkar broke the 13-run stand.

Shah, whose 31-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 21. A dozen balls later, he was caught by Kanitkar, who broke the run-a-ball stand. The eighth-wicket pair put on four. Tony scored eight. His run-a-ball innings included a boundary. Eight balls later, Sourav Ganguly and Jadeja ran him out.

Aasif Karim, Kenya’s skipper, faced a dozen balls, scoring half-a-dozen. Singh had a reason to be in seventh heaven – he broke the five-run stand. Martin Suji, who faced a couple of balls, scored a run. He was unbeaten, as was Sheikh, who faced a couple of balls, scoring as many.

India conceded 11 extras. Kenya scored 223 for the loss of nine wickets off 50 overs. Ganguly, who faced three balls, scored 15. He was wicketless, as was Debasis Mohanty, who faced nine overs, conceding 44.

Singh, who bowled eight overs, conceded 24. He picked up a couple of wickets. Sanghvi, Kanitkar and Agarkar (whose spell including a couple of maidens) bowled 10 overs each, picking up a couple of wickets apiece. They conceded 52, 46 and 36, respectively.

Ganguly, whose 18-ball innings included a boundary, scored nine. Forty-one balls into the chase, Martin broke the 21-run stand. Dravid, whose 62-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 49. A hundred and twenty-two balls later, Karim broke the 98-run partnership.

Jadeja, whose 52-ball innings included three boundaries and the only six of the innings, included 50. Eighty-seven balls later, he was caught by Tikolo. Sheikh broke the 78-run partnership. The fourth-wicket pair put on three. Kanitkar scored a run. Five balls later, Martin and Otieno ran him out.

Laxman, who faced five balls, scored a run. Nine balls later, he was caught by Sheikh, who broke the seven-run stand. Gagan Khoda, the player of the match, scored 89. His 129-ball innings included eight boundaries. Four balls later, he was caught by Tikolo, who broke the two-run stand. Interestingly, the Rajasthan batsman never represented India again.

Singh faced two balls, scoring as many. He was unbeaten, as was Prasad, who faced 13 balls, scoring 11. Kenya conceded a dozen extras. India, who scored 224 for the loss of six wickets off 47 overs, won by four wickets with three overs to spare.

Odumbe, who bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceded 38. He was wicketless, as was Odoyo, who bowled seven overs, conceding 34. Martin, who bowled seven overs, conceded 22. He picked up a wicket.

Tikolo and Karim bowled 10 overs each, picking up a wicket apiece. While the former conceded 46, the latter conceded 39. Sheikh, who bowled seven overs, conceded 41. He picked up a couple of scalps.
