SL (Azh)are beaten by India

While India made no changes to their playing eleven, Sri Lanka made just one change to the eleven that last played the Indians – Nuwan Zoysa made way for Pramodya Wickramasinghe. Arjuna Ranatunga, Sri Lanka’s captain, won the toss, inserting the Indians, whose openers put on just a run. Sourav Ganguly, who faced three balls, didn’t get off the mark. Marvan Atapattu had a reason to be in seventh heaven – he ran him out.

Nayan Mongia, who faced 22 balls, scored just a run. Forty-one balls later, he was caught by Atapattu. Wickramasinghe broke the 17-run stand. Tendulkar, whose 28-ball (Sach)innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 18. Nineteen balls later, he was caught by Atapattu. Wickramasinghe broke the 11-run stand.

Robin Singh, who faced eight balls, scored three. Eleven balls later, he was caught by Romesh Kaluwitharana. Needless to say, Kumar Dharmasena was in seventh heaven. Mohammad Azharuddin, India's skipper, faced 48 balls, scoring 26. Ninety-nine balls later, he was caught by Atapattu. Thilan Samaraweera broke the 52-run partnership.

Nikhil Chopra, whose 32-ball innings included a boundary, scored 15. Forty-nine balls later, he was caught by Roshan Mahanama. Dharmasena broke the 30-run stand. Ajit Agarkar, the player of the match, scored half-a-dozen. His nine-ball innings included a boundary. Twenty-one balls later, he was caught by Dharmasena, who broke the 16-run stand.

Javagal, who faced 20 balls, scored 15. (Srina)Thirty-four balls later, Chaminda Vaas broke the 29-run stand. The ninth-wicket pair put on just a run. Ajay Jadeja, whose 117-ball innings included a boundary and the only six of the innings, scored 64. Three balls later, Wickramasinghe ran him out.

Sunil Joshi, who faced five balls, scored three. He was unbeaten. The last-wicket pair put on 15. Anil Kumble, whose 11-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored a dozen. Fifteen balls later, Atapattu ran him out.

Sri Lanka conceded 16 extras. India were dismissed for 179 off 49.5 overs. Aravinda de Silva, who bowled a couple of overs, conceded 11. He was wicketless, as was Jayasuriya, who bowled 10 overs, conceding (Sana)thirty-four.

Vaas, whose spell included a maiden, and Samaraweera bowled 10 overs each, picking up a wicket apiece. While the former conceded 37, the latter conceded 35. Wickramasinghe bowled 8.5 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 27, picking up a couple of wickets. Dharmasena, who bowled nine overs, conceded 31. He picked up three scalps.

Sri Lanka’s openers didn’t get off the mark. Jayasuriya, who faced a couple of balls, didn’t open his account. A couple of balls into the chase, he was dismissed by Srinath. Avishka Gunawardene, who faced five balls, didn’t open his account. Nine balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Agarkar, who broke the two-run stand.

Atapattu, who faced 14 balls, scored 10. Thirty-two balls later, Agarkar broke the 19-run stand. The fourth-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Mahanama, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. The next ball, he was trapped leg before wicket by Agarkar.

Ranatunga, whose 14-ball innings included a boundary, scored nine. Thirty-three balls later, he was caught by Singh. Srinath broke the 26-run stand. Kaluwitharana, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. A couple of  dot balls later, Joshi ran him out.

De Silva, whose 67-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 29. Forty-six balls later, he was caught by Mongia. Joshi broke the 19-run stand. Samaraweera, whose 48-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 16. Forty-six balls later, he was caught by Srinath. Joshi broke the 13-run stand.

Dharmasena, who faced 60 balls, scored 13. He was unbeaten. Vaas, who faced 12 balls, scored four. Thirty-four balls later, Joshi broke the 10-run stand. Wickramasinghe, who faced 15 balls, scored three. Twenty-nine balls later, the (Kumb)leggie broke the nine-run stand.

India conceded 14 extras. Sri Lanka, who were bundled out for 98 off 39 overs, lost by 81 runs. Chopra bowled four wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded nine. Kumble bowled nine overs, including three maidens. He conceded 11, picking up a wicket.

Srinath bowled eight overs, including a maiden. He conceded 20, picking up two wickets. Agarkar bowled eight overs, including a maiden. He conceded 35, picking up three wickets. Joshi bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 17, picking up three scalps.
