India fare (Zimbab)well (Azharudd)in season-opener

India made four changes to their playing eleven – Navjot Singh Sidhu, Sanjay Raul, Sunil Joshi and Venkatesh Prasad made way for Rahul Dravid, Robin Singh, Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh.

Zimbabwe made three changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Grant Flower, Guy Whittall and Adam Huckle made way for One-day International debutant Trevor Madondo, Craig Wishart and Andy Whittall.

On winning the toss, Mohammad Azharuddin, India's skipper, inserted the hosts. Madondo*, who faced 26 balls, scored 10. Thirty-five ballS(ach)into the match, he was caught by Tendulkar, the player of the match. Ajit Agarkar broke the 20-run stand.

Murray Goodwin, who faced 10 balls, scored (Srina)three. Seventeen balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Javagal, who broke the 20-run stand. Alastair Campbell, Zimbabwe's skipper, scored 53. His 41-ball innings included nine boundaries. Fifty-four balls later, he was caught by Azharuddin. Robin broke the 59-run partnership.

The fourth-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Andy Flower, whose 33-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 30. Three dot balls later, he was caught by Robin off the bowling of Harbhajan Singh.

Wishart had no reason to be in seventh heaven – he scored just a run. Fourteen balls later, he was stumped by Nayan Mongia. Harbhajan broke the six-run stand. The sixth-wicket pair put on 52. Heath Streak, whose 50-ball innings included a boundary, scored 23. Dravid and Kumble ran him out.

Craig Evans, whose 59-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 34. Five balls later, he was caught by Agarkar. Harbhajan broke the one-run stand. Gary Brent, who faced three balls, didn’t open his account. Kumble had a reason to be in seventh heaven – he broke the two-run stand.

Andy Whittall, whose 45-ball innings included a boundary, scored 29. Sixty-seven balls later, he was caught by Agarkar, who broke the 43-run stand. The last-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Strang, whose 32-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 22. A couple of dot balls later, he was dismissed by Agarkar.

Pommie, who didn’t face a ball, (Mbang)was unbeaten. India conceded eight extras. Zimbabwe were dismissed for 213 off 50 overs. Each of the bowlers bowled 10 overs apiece. Robin (whose spell included a maiden), Srinath and Kumble conceded 36, 45 and 51, respectively, picking up a wicket apiece.

Agarkar and Harbhajan (whose spell included a maiden) conceded 42 and 36, respectively, picking up three scalps apiece.

Sourav Ganguly, whose 20-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 11. Thirty-eight balls into the chase, he was caught by Andy Flower. Streak broke the 29-run stand. Tendulkar, whose 130-ball innings included 13 boundaries and the only six of the match, scored 127. He was unbeaten.

Dravid, whose 98-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 64. Two hundred and three balls later, he was caught by Campbell. Brent broke the 180-run partnership. Ajay Jadeja, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored three. He was unbeaten.

Zimbabwe conceded 11 extras. India, who scored 216 for the loss of a couple of wickets off 42.2 overs, won by eight wickets with 46 balls to spare. Evans, who bowled four wicketless overs, conceded 21.

Mbangwa and Strang bowled seven wicketless overs, including a maiden, apiece. While the former conceded 43, the latter conceded 36. Andy Whittall, who bowled seven wicketless overs, conceded 31.

Streak bowled eight overs, conceding 30. He picked up a wicket, as did Brent, who bowled 9.2 overs, conceding 53.
