The Sri Lankans beat IndiA(zharuddi)narrowly

While the Indians made no changes to their playing eleven, the Sri Lankans (Mahana)made a couple of Chan(dana)ges to the eleven that (Mahe)last played the Indians – Roshan and Jayawardene made way for Avishka Gunawardene and Upul.

It was reduced to a 36-overs-a-side match. On winning the toss, Mohammad Azharuddin, India’s skipper, won the toss, inserting the hosts. Gunawardene, who faced a ball, didn’t get off the mark. Four balls into the match, he was caught by Azharuddin. Ajit Agarkar broke the one-run stand.

Marvan Atapattu, whose 18-ball (Rob)innings included a boundary, scored 12. Twenty-four balls later, he was caught by Singh. Agarkar broke the 29-run stand. Sanath Jayasuriya, whose 14-ball innings included three boundaries and a six, scored 23. Half-a-dozen balls later, he was caught by Hrishikesh Kanitkar. Venkatesh Prasad broke the eight-run stand.

Arjuna Ranatunga, Sri Lanka’s skipper, scored 11. His 22-ball innings included a couple of boundaries. Forty-eight balls later, he was caught by Ajay Jadeja. Harbhajan Singh broke the 39-run stand.

Although his 16-ball innings included a boundary, Romesh Kaluwitharana had no reason to be in seventh heaven – 24 balls later, he was stumped by Nayan Mongia. Harbhajan broke the 13-run stand. Chandana, whose 24-ball innings included a boundary and a couple of sixes, scored 26. Forty-six balls later, Agarkar broke the 42-run stand.

Kumar Dharmasena, who faced 21 balls, scored 11. Forty-two balls later, he was caught by Sachin Tendulkar. Anil Kumble broke the 28-run stand. Aravinda de Silva, the player of the match, scored 62. His 86-ball innings included five boundaries. Seven balls later, he was caught by Azharuddin. Prasad broke the four-run stand.

Pramodya Wickramasinghe, who scored five, was unbea‘ten’, as was Muttiah Muralitharan, who scored three. India conceded 11 extras. Sri Lanka, who scored 171 for the loss of eight wickets off 36 overs. Robin, who bowled seven wicketless overs, conceded 38.

Harbhajan and Prasad bowled seven overs each, picking up a couple of wickets apiece. While the former conceded 35, the latter conceded 34. Agarkar, who bowled seven overs, conceded 38. He picked up three scalps. The (Kumb)leggie, who bowled eight overs, conceded 22. He picked up a wicket.

Tendulkar, whose 16-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 17. Thirty-seven balls into the chase, he was caught by Dharmasena, who broke the 41-run stand. Sourav Ganguly, whose 27-ball innings included five boundaries, scored 26. Ten balls later, he was caught by de Silva. Needless to say, Suresh Perera was in seventh heaven.

Mongia, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored a couple. Ten balls later, he was caught by Ranatunga. Perera broke the nine-run partnership. The fourth-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Jadeja, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. The next ball, the offie (Muralitha)ran him out.

Azharuddin, whose 11-ball innings included a boundary, scored eight. Five balls later, he was caught by Ranatunga. Dharmasena broke the 0ne-run stand. Kanitkar, who faced 22 balls, scored nine. Thirty-seven balls later, he was caught by Ranatunga. De Silva broke the 17-run stand.

Agarkar, whose 47-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and a six, scored 30. Ninety-two balls later, Jayasuriya broke the 63-run partnership. Kumble, who faced 10 balls, scored four. Nineteen balls later, he was stumped by Kaluwitharana. Jayasuriya broke the 24-run stand.

Robin, whose 74-ball innings included a boundary and a six, scored 50. He had an all-run four. A couple of balls later, he was caught by Jayawardene, the substitute. Jayasuriya broke the one-run stand. Prasad, who faced a ball, scored a run. He was unbeaten.

The last-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Harbhajan, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. The next ball, he was stumped by Kaluwitharana off the bowling of Jayasuriya. Sri Lanka conceded 16 extras. India, who were dismissed for 163 off 35.4 overs, lost by eight runs.

Wickramasinghe, who bowled three overs, conceded 26. He was wicketless, as was Muralitharan, who bowled eight overs, conceding 29. De Silva, who bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceded 27. He picked up a wicket.

Perera, who bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceded 25. He picked up a couple of wickets, as did Dharmasena, who bowled seven overs, conceding 29. Jayasuriya, who bowled 5.4 overs, conceded 18. He picked up four scalps.
