The West
Indies made three changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Jimmy
Adams, Nehemiah Perry and Mervyn Dillon made way for Adrian Griffith and a
couple of One-day International debutants – Chris Gayle and Corey Collymore.
On winning
the toss, Sourav Ganguly, India’s skipper, inserted the West Indians. Griffith,
who faced a dozen balls, scored just a run. Twenty-two balls into the match,
Debasis Mohanty broke the eight-run stand.
Shivnarine
Chanderpaul, whose 37-ball innings included a boundary, scored 16.
Seventy-three balls later, he was stumped by Mannava. Nikhil Chopra broke the
35-run stand. Gayle, who faced eight balls, scored a run. Fifteen balls later,
Robin Singh broke the five-run stand.
Brian Lara,
the West Indies’ skipper, had no reason to be in seventh heaven – he scored
just a couple. Twenty-three balls later, he was caught by Kanitkar. Singh broke
the nine-run stand. Powell, whose 34-ball innings included five boundaries and (Ricar)do
sixes, scored 37. Fifty-two balls later, he was caught by Martin. Singh broke
the 64-run partnership.
Campbell,
whose 95-ball (Sherw)innings included half-a-dozen boundaries, scored 62. His
50 – which came off 81 balls – included half-a-dozen boundaries. Sixteen
ballS(uni)later, he was stumped by Mannava. Joshi broke the 14-run stand.
Hendy Bryan,
who faced 13 balls, scored just a run. Twenty-six balls later, he was trapped
leg before wicket by Joshi, who broke the six-run stand. Collymore, whose
31-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 13. He was unbeaten.
Ridley
Jacobs, whose 30-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 19. Twenty-six
balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Chopra, who broke the 14-run
stand. Reon King, who faced half-a-dozen balls, didn’t get off the mark. Eleven
balls later, he was caught by Martin. Mohanty broke the five-run stand.
Courtney
Walsh had no reason to be in seventh heaven – he scored just a run. Fourteen
balls later, he was caught by Martin. Venkatesh Prasad broke the three-run
stand. India conceded 10 extras. The West Indies were dismissed for 163 off
46.2 overs. Venkatesh, who bowled 8.2 overs, conceded 38. He picked up a
wicket.
Joshi, who
bowled eight overs, conceded 30. He picked up a couple of wickets. Mohanty and
Chopra bowled 10 overs each, picking up a couple of wickets apiece. While the
former, whose spell included a couple of maidens, conceded 31, the latter,
whose spell included three maidens, conceded 17. Singh bowled 10 overs,
including a maiden. He conceded 43, picking up three scalps.
Mannava,
whose 47-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 24. Seventy-five balls
into the chase, he was caught by Griffith. Collymore broke the 54-run
partnership. Sadagoppan Ramesh, whose 97-ball innings included eight
boundaries, scored 55. His 50, which came off 93 balls, included eight
boundaries. He was unbeaten.
Rahul
Dravid, whose 14-ball innings included a boundary, scored five. Twenty balls
later, he was caught by Jacobs. Walsh broke the five-run stand. Ganguly, the
player of the match, scored 54. His 69-ball innings included seven boundaries
and the only six of the innings. His 50, which came off 68 balls, included
half-a-dozen boundaries and the six. He was unbeaten.
The West
Indies conceded 27 extras. India, who scored 165 for the loss of two wickets
off 37.3 overs, won by eight wickets with 75 balls to spare. Powell, who faced
three wicketless overs, had no reason to be in seventh heaven. Gayle, who
bowled half-a-dozen wicketless overs, conceded 37.
King and
Bryan bowled eight wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 39, the
latter conceded 22. Walsh bowled seven overs, including two maidens. He
conceded 20, picking up a wicket. Collymore bowled eight overs, including a
maiden. He conceded 29, picking up a wicket.
India led
the three-match series 1-0.
