Jadeja cap‘ton’s; India beat SL

India made three changes to their playing eleven – Azharuddin, Vinod Kambli and Gyanendra Pandey (Moham)made way for a couple of One-day International debutants – Sadagoppan Ramesh and Amay Khurasiya – and Robin Singh.

Sri Lanka made a couple of changes to the (Russ)eleven that last played the Indians – Arnold and Hemantha Boteju made way for Marvan Atapattu and Eric Upashantha. Arjuna Ranatunga, the Sri Lankan skipper, won the toss, inserting the hosts.

Ramesh, whose 40-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 24. Sixty-five balls into the match, he was caught by Aravinda de Silva. Upashantha broke the 43-run stand. Rahul Dravid, whose 15-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 17. Thirty-six balls later, he was caught by Ranatunga. Upashantha broke the 22-run stand.

Sourav Ganguly, whose 91-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries and a six, scored 65. Ninety balls later, he was caught by Hashan Tillakaratne. Upul Chandana broke the 77-run stand. Ajay Jadeja, India’s stand-in skipper and the player of the match, scored 103. His 102-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries and three sixes. He was unbeaten.

Khurasiya, whose 57-ball innings included four boundaries and a couple of sixes, scored 57. Ninety-two balls later, he was caught by Chandana. Pramodya Wickramasinghe broke the 125-run partnership. Singh, who faced a ball, didn’t get off the mark. Three balls later, he was caught by Tillakaratne. Wickramasinghe broke the five-run stand.

Ajit Agarkar, who faced three balls, scored a run. Half-a-dozen balls later, he was caught by the substitute, Arnold. Chaminda Vaas broke the five-run stand. Nayan Mongia, whose four-ball innings included a boundary, scored half-a-dozen. He was unbeaten.

Sri Lanka conceded 13 extras. India conceded 286 for the loss of six wickets off 50 overs. Mahela Jayawardene and Ruwan Kalpage bowled half-a-dozen wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 46, the latter conceded 44.

Chandana, who bowled eight overs, conceded 46. He picked up a wicket, as did Vaas, who bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 53. Upashantha and Wickramasinghe bowled 10 overs, including a maiden, each, picking up a couple of scalps apiece. While the former conceded 52, the latter conceded 38.

Avishka Gunawardene, whose 22-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 10. Twenty-seven balls into the chase, he was caught by Ganguly. Javagal Srinath broke the 20-run stand. Atapattu, whose 12-ball innings included a boundary, scored half-a-dozen. Eight balls later, he was caught by Ganguly. Agarkar broke the one-run stand.

Jayawardene, whose 34-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 30. Sixty-six balls later, he was caught by Mongia. Singh broke the 56-run stand. Vaas, who faced four balls, didn’t get off the mark. Ten balls later, he was caught by the substitute (and local boy), Hrishikesh Kanitkar. Singh broke the six-run stand.

The fifth-wicket pair put on 62. De Silva, whose 78-ball innings included five boundaries, scored 55. A hundred and twenty balls later, Nikhil (Chop)ran him out. The sixth-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Ranatunga, whose 40-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 25. The next ball, Singh ran him out.

Chandana, whose 23-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 22. Forty-three balls later, he was caught by Jadeja. Agarkar broke the 39-run stand. Tillakaratne, whose 39-ball innings included a boundary, scored 28. He was unbeaten.

Kalpage, who faced 17 balls, scored 13. Twenty-eight balls later, he was caught by Mongia. Srinath broke the 30-run stand. Upashantha, whose 10-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and a six, scored 15. Eleven balls later, Agarkar broke the 16-run stand.

Wickramasinghe, who faced seven balls, scored a couple. Nine balls later, Kumble broke the five-run stand. India conceded 29 extras. The Sri Lankans, who were dismissed for 235 off 45.5 overs, lost by 51 runs.

Ganguly, who bowled four overs, conceded 19. He was wicketless, as was Chopra, who bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceding 53. Kumble, who bowled 7.5 overs, conceded 31. He picked up a wicket.

Singh and Srinath bowled 10 overs each, picking up a couple of wickets apiece. While the former conceded 45, the latter, whose spell included a maiden, conceded 44. Agarkar, who bowled eight overs, conceded 35. He picked up three scalps.
