India triumph under Jadeja’s lE(ngl)a(n)dership

India (Moham)made just one change to their playing eleven – Azharuddin made way for Vinod Kambli. England made a couple of changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Robert Croft and Alan Mullally made way for Vince Wells and Angus Fraser.

On winning the toss, Ajay Jadeja, India’s stand-in skipper, chose to bat. Sourav Ganguly, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored a couple. Twenty-six balls into the match, Darren Gough broke the 16-run stand.

The second-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Sadagoppan Ramesh, whose 23-ball innings included a boundary, scored a dozen. Half-a-dozen balls later, he was caught by Wells off the bowling of Fraser.

Kambli, whose 52-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 23. Eighty-six balls later, he was caught by Graeme Hick. Mark Ealham broke the 45-run stand. Javagal Srinath, whose 29-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 28. Sixty balls later, he was caught by Hick, who broke the 59-run partnership.

The fifth-wicket pair put on 29. Rahul Dravid, whose 92-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries, scored 63. Forty balls later, Neil Fairbrother ran him out. Jadeja, whose 67-ball innings included seven boundaries, scored 74. He was unbeaten.

Singh, whose 25-ball (Rob)innings included a boundary, scored 18. Sixty balls later, he was caught by Fairbrother. Gough broke the 58-run partnership. Nayan Mongia, whose 10-ball innings included a boundary, scored 11. He was unbeaten.

England conceded eight extras. India scored 239 for the loss of six wickets off 50 overs. Wells, who bowled a couple of wicketless overs, conceded 18. Ian had no reason to be (Aust)in seventh heaven – he conceded 49, and was wicketless. Andrew Flintoff, who bowled eight wicketless overs, conceded 43.

Hick, who bowled three overs, conceded 13. He picked up a wicket. Ealham and Fraser bowled 10 overs each, picking up a wicket apiece. While the former conceded 41, the latter, whose spell included three maidens, conceded 24. Gough bowled 10 overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 49, picking up a couple of scalps.

Alec Stewart, England’s skipper, faced 21 balls, scoring just a couple. Forty-nine balls into the chase, Srinath broke the 26-run stand. Although his five-ball innings included a six, Wells wasn’t in seventh heaven. Nine balls later, he was caught by Venkatesh Prasad, the player of the match, who broke the 15-run stand.

The third-wicket pair put on 14. Ealham, whose eight-ball innings included a boundary, wasn’t in seventh heaven. Fifteen balls later, Jadeja ran him out. Hick, who faced 14 balls, scored just a run. Twenty-seven balls later, he was stumped by Mongia. Kumble broke the 11-run stand.

Nick Knight, whose 93-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries and four sixes, scored 84. Seventy balls later, the (Kumb)leggie broke the 58-run partnership. The sixth-wicket pair wasn’t in seventh heaven. Flintoff, who faced nine balls, scored three. Fifteen balls later, Ganguly ran him out.

Fairbrother, whose 30-ball innings included a boundary, scored 16. Sixty-five balls later, Prasad broke the 53-run partnership. Austin, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored a couple. Ten balls later, Prasad broke the four-run stand.

Graham Thorpe, whose 88-ball innings included seven boundaries and a six, scored 79. Twenty-five ballS(uni)later, he was stumped by Mongia. Joshi broke the 31-run stand. Gough, whose 19-ball innings included a boundary and a six, scored 20. He was unbeaten.

The last-wicket pair put on 11. Fraser, who faced three balls, scored a run. Eight balls later, Srinath ran him out. India conceded eight extras. England, who were dismissed for 230 off 48.5 overs, lost by nine runs.

Jadeja, who bowled a wicketless over, conceded a couple. Ganguly, who bowled four wicketless overs, conceded 17. Singh, who bowled five wicketless overs, conceded 25. Joshi, who bowled nine overs, conceded 54. He picked up a wicket.

Srinath, who bowled 9.5 overs, conceded 64. He picked up a wicket. Kumble bowled 10 overs, including two maidens. He conceded 28, picking up two wickets. Prasad bowled 10 overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 35, picking up three scalps.
