SL lose to India agA(zharudd)in

India made just one change to their playing eleven – Rahul Dravid made way for Nikhil Chopra. Sri Lanka made four Chan(dana)ges to the eleven that last played the Indians – Upul, Pramodya Wickramasinghe, Niroshan Bandaratilleke and Muttiah Muralitharan made way for Avishka Gunawardene, Chaminda Vaas, One-day International debutant Thilan Samaraweera and Nuwan Zoysa.

On winning the toss, Mohammad Azharuddin, India’s skipper, inserted the Sri Lankans. Gunawardene, whose 55-ball innings included eight boundaries, scored 52. Fourteen balls into the match, Anil Kumble broke the 79-run stand. Sanath Jayasuriya, whose 41-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 27. Sixteen balls later, Chopra broke the six-run stand.

Aravinda de Silva, who faced four balls, didn’t get off the mark. Five balls later, he was caught by Sourav Ganguly. The (Kumb)leggie broke the one-run stand. Arjuna Ranatunga, Sri Lanka’s skipper, scored 43. His 66-ball innings included a boundary and the only six of the innings. A hundred and twenty-three balls later, he was caught by Ajit Agarkar, who broke the 89-run partnership.

Romesh Kaluwitharana, whose 19-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 22. Forty-four balls later, he was caught by Kumble. Agarkar broke the run-a-ball stand. Marvan Atapattu, whose 93-ball innings included a boundary, scored 64. Nine balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Javagal Srinath, who broke the run-a-ball stand.

Roshan Mahanama, who faced 11 balls, scored a dozen. He was unbeaten. Vaas has no reason to be in seventh heaven – he scored half-a-dozen. Eleven balls later, Srinath broke the 10-run stand. Kumar Dharmasena, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored three. He was unbeaten.

India conceded 16 extras. Sri Lanka scored 245 for the loss of seven wickets off 50 overs. Sachin Tendulkar, who bowled four overs, conceded 17. He was wicketless, as was Sunil Joshi, who bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceded 33.

Chopra bowled 10 overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 34, picking up a wicket. Srinath, Agarkar and Kumble (whose spell included two maidens) bowled 10 overs each, picking up a couple of scalps apiece. They conceded 59, 56 and 39, respectively.

Tendulkar, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored three. Seventeen balls into the chase, he was caught by Kaluwitharana. Vaas broke the 12-run stand. Ganguly, whose 15-ball innings included a boundary, scored five. Three balls later, he was caught by Kaluwitharana. Zoysa broke the one-run stand.

Nayan Mongia, whose 63-ball innings included five boundaries and a six, scored 51. A hundred and thirty-eight balls later, he was caught by Mahanama. Samaraweera broke the 104-run partnership. The fourth-wicket pair put on a couple. Srinath, who faced a couple of balls, scored a run. Five balls later, Atapattu ran him out.

Azharuddin, the player of the match, scored 94. His 131-ball innings included three boundaries and four sixes. Eighty-five balls later, Vaas broke the 79-run partnership. The sixth-wicket pair put on nine. Ajay Jadeja, whose 38-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 26. Fifteen balls later, Mahanama ran him out.

Robin Singh, who faced 26 balls, scored 12. He was unbeaten. The seventh-wicket pair put on eight. Chopra had no reason to be in seventh heaven – he scored four. Fifteen balls later, Jayasuriya and de Silva ran him out. Agarkar, whose 12-ball innings included a boundary and a couple of sixes, scored 26. He was unbeaten.

Sri Lanka conceded 26 extras. India, who scored 248 for the loss of seven wickets off 49.1 overs, won by three wickets with five balls to spare. De Silva, who bowled five wicketless overs, conceded 26.

Jayasuriya, who bowled 8.1 wicketless overs, conceded 39. Dharmasena, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 69. His sixth over – the 37th of the Indian innings – was a five-ball over, called by umpire David Orchard.

Zoysa, who bowled eight overs, conceded 45. He picked up a wicket, as did Samaraweera, who bowled 10 overs, conceding 41. Vaas, who bowled eight overs, conceded 19. He picked up a couple of scalps.
