India (Azh)are not the (Ki)winners

India made one change to their playing eleven – Sachin Tendulkar made way for Hrishikesh Kanitkar. New Zealand made no changes to the eleven that last played the Indians. Mohammad Azharuddin, India’s skipper, won the toss, inserting the hosts, whose openers put on five. Horne, who faced three balls, didn’t get off the mark. Eleven balls into the Mat(t)ch, Anil Kumble ran him out.

Craig McMillan, who faced 22 balls, scored half-a-dozen. Fifty balls later, he was caught by Nayan Mongia. Javagal broke the (Srina)thirty-four-run stand. The third-wicket pair put on 62. Bryan Young, whose 75-ball innings included seven boundaries, scored 57. Eighty-eight balls later, Sourav Ganguly ran him out.

Roger, whose 88-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 63. (Two)Seventy-eight balls later, he was caught by Kumble. Srinath broke the 69-run partnership. Dion Nash, New Zealand’s skipper, scored 18. His run-a-ball innings included a couple of boundaries. Forty-five balls later, he was caught by Kumble. Srinath broke the 85-run partnership.

Chris Cairns, the player of the match, scored 115. His 80-ball innings included seven boundaries and as many sixes. Nineteen balls later, he was caught by Ganguly. Kumble broke the 32-run stand. Chris Harris, whose 13-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 19. He was unbeaten.

The seventh-wicket pair put on half-a-dozen. Adam Parore, whose two-ball innings included a boundary, scored five. Three balls after Cairns’ dismissal, Nikhil (Chop)ran him out. The eighth-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Daniel Vettori, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. The next ball, he was dismissed by Chopra.

Gavin Larsen, who faced a couple of balls, scored as many. He was unbeaten. India conceded 15 extras. New Zealand scored 300 for the loss of eight wickets off 50 overs. Kanitkar and Ganguly bowled four wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 24, the latter conceded 20.

Robin Singh, who bowled five wicketless overs, conceded 30. Venkatesh Prasad, who bowled nine wicketless overs, conceded 61. Chopra, who bowled eight overs, conceded 36. He picked up a wicket, as did Kumble, who bowled 10 overs, conceding 78. Srinath bowled 10 overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 44, picking up three scalps.

Ganguly, whose 50-ball innings included 11 boundaries, scored 60. Eighty balls into the chase, he was caught by Horne. Simon Doull broke the 78-run partnership. Ajay Jadeja, whose 39-ball innings included three boundaries and a six, scored 25. Fourteen balls later, Larsen broke the 17-run stand.

Rahul Dravid, whose 58-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 29. Seventy-eight balls later, he was caught by Harris. Vettori broke the 51-run partnership. Singh, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored three. Seventeen balls later, he was caught by Nash. Larsen broke the 12-run stand.

Srinath, whose 11-ball innings included a boundary, scored nine. Eighteen balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Cairns, who broke the 20-run stand. The sixth-wicket pair put on nine. Although his run-a-ball innings included a boundary, Kanitkar wasn’t in seventh heaven – 14 balls later, Cairns ran him out.

Azharuddin, whose 83-ball innings included three boundaries and a six, scored 63. Fifteen balls later, he was caught by McMillan. Harris broke the run-a-ball stand. Mongia, whose 12-ball innings included a boundary, scored nine. Fifteen balls later, he was caught by Larsen. Harris broke the 11-run stand.

Chopra, who faced 17 balls, scored nine. He was unbeaten. Kumble, whose run-a-ball innings included a boundary, had no reason to be in seventh heaven – a dozen balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Harris, who broke the 11-run stand. Prasad, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored a couple. Ten balls later, he was stumped by Parore. Harris broke the six-run stand.

New Zealand conceded seven extras. India, who were dismissed for 230 off 45.3 overs, lost by 70 runs. Nash, who bowled eight wicketless overs, conceded 47. Vettori, who bowled five overs, conceded 30. He picked up a wicket.

Cairns, who bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceded 48. He picked up a wicket, as did Doull, who bowled seven overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 25. Larsen, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 34. He picked up two wickets. Harris, who bowled 9.3 overs, conceded 40. He picked up four scalps.

The five-match series was levelled 2-2.
