India made just one change to their playing eleven – Rahul Sanghvi made way for Harbhajan Singh. Sri Lanka M(ahel)ade three changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Hashan Tillakaratne, Chaminda Vaas and Sajeewa de Silva made way for Jayawardene, Pramodya Wickramasinghe and One-day International debutant Suresh Perera.

On winning the toss, Arjuna Ranatunga, Sri Lanka’s skipper, chose to bat. Jayasuriya, whose 21-ball innings included a boundary, scored a dozen. (Sana)Thirty balls into the match, Ajit Agarkar broke the 16-run stand.

Romesh Kaluwitharana, whose 34-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 29. Forty-three balls later, he was caught by Agarkar. Harbhajan broke the 34-run stand. Marvan Atapattu, whose 89-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries, scored 70. A hundred and sixty-nine balls later, Anil Kumble broke the 145-run partnership.

Aravinda de Silva, whose 119-ball innings included five boundaries and the only six of the innings, scored 97. Fifty-one balls later, he was caught by Mohammad Azharuddin, India’s skipper. Agarkar broke the 41-run stand.

The fifth-wicket pair put on a couple. Roshan Mahanama, who didn’t face a ball. A couple of balls later, Venkatesh Prasad and Kumble ran him out. The sixth-wicket pair didn’t open its account. Ranatunga, who faced 33 balls, scored 25. The next ball, he was caught by Azharuddin off the bowling of the (Kumb)leggie.

Jayawardene, who faced a couple of balls, scored a run. He was unbeaten, as was Kumar Dharmasena, who faced a couple of balls, scoring as many. India conceded seven extras. Sri Lanka scored 243 for the loss of six wickets off 50 overs.

Sachin Tendulkar, who bowled a couple of wicketless overs, conceded 17. Hrishikesh Kanitkar bowled four wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 19. Prasad, who bowled seven wicketless overs, conceded 32. Robin Singh, who bowled eight wicketless overs, conceded 30.

Agarkar, who bowled nine overs, conceded 38. He picked up a couple of wickets. Harbhajan, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 45. He picked up a wicket. Kumble, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 56. He picked up a couple of scalps.

Tendulkar, whose 50-ball innings included nine boundaries, scored 65. A hundred and four balls into the chase, he was caught by Atapattu. Muttiah Muralitharan broke the 115-run partnership.

Sourav Ganguly, the player of the match, scored 80. His 114-ball innings included seven boundaries and a six. A hundred and 119 balls later, he was caught by Jayawardene. Muralitharan broke the 96-run partnership.

Azharuddin, whose 81-ball innings included a boundary and a six, scored 55. He was unbeaten, as was Ajay Jadeja, who scored 22. His 18-ball innings included a boundary and a six.

Sri Lanka scored 24 extras. India, who scored 246 for the loss of a couple of wickets off 43.4 overs, won by eight wickets with 38 balls to spare. Wickramasinghe, who bowled five wicketless overs, conceded 36. Jayasuriya, who bowled nine wicketless overs, conceded 39.

Dharmasena bowled 9.4 wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 57. Perera, who bowled 10 wicketless overs, conceded 58. Muralitharan, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 48. He picked up both the wickets that fell.
