Jadeja leads; India beat SA

India made a couple of changes to their playing eleven – Jacob Martin and Vinod Kambli made way for One-day International debutant Vijay Bharadwaj and Ajay Jadeja (who was leading the team).

South Africa made four changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Gary Kirsten, Daryll Cullinan, Nicky Boje and Allan Donald made way for One-day International debutant Boeta Dippenaar, Dale Benkenstein, Derek Crookes and Steve Elworthy.

On winning the toss, Hansie Cronje, the South African skipper, chose to bat. Herschelle Gibbs, whose 24-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 18. Fifty-six balls into the match, he was caught by Rahul Dravid. Sunil Joshi, the player of the match, broke the 32-run stand.

The second-wicket pair didn’t get off the Mark. Boucher had no reason to be in seventh heaven – he didn’t open his account. A dozen balls later, Robin Singh ran him out. Dippenaar, whose 53-ball innings included a boundary, scored 17. Twenty-eight balls later, Joshi broke the seven-run stand.

Cronje, who faced 11 balls, scored a couple. Thirty-two balls later, he was caught by Sadagoppan Ramesh. Joshi broke the six-run stand. Benkenstein, whose 42-ball innings included a boundary, scored 18. Eighty-six balls later, he was caught by Nikhil Chopra, who broke the 38-run stand.

Jonty Rhodes, who faced four balls, scored a run. Nine balls later, he was caught by Chopra. Joshi broke the two-run stand. The seventh-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Shaun Pollock, who faced a couple of balls, didn’t open his account. A couple of dot balls later, he was caught by Dravid off the bowling of Joshi.

Jacques Kallis, whose 110-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 38. Forty-seven balls into the match, he was caught by Debasis Mohanty. Bharadwaj broke the 19-run stand. Although he was unbeaten, Lance Klusener, who faced 23 balls, had no reason to be in seventh heaven.

Crookes, whose 10-ball innings included a six, scored eight. Fourteen balls into the match, he was caught by Mannava Prasad. Chopra broke the 13-run stand. The last-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Elworthy, who faced a couple of balls, didn’t get off the mark. A couple of balls later, he was caught by Jadeja off the bowling of Chopra.

India conceded eight extras. South Africa were bundled out for 117 off 48 overs. Dravid, who bowled a wicketless overs, conceded 10. Ramesh, who bowled a couple of wicketless overs, conceded seven. Mohanty bowled six wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 21. Venkatesh Prasad bowled nine wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 23.

Bharadwaj bowled 10 overs, including three maidens. He conceded 16, picking up a wicket. Chopra, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 26. He picked up three wickets. Joshi bowled 10 overs, including half-a-dozen overs. He conceded half-a-dozen, picking up five wickets.

Ramesh, whose 33-ball innings included seven boundaries, scored 36. Sixty-two balls into the chase, he was caught by Pollock. Crookes broke the 72-run partnership. Sourav Ganguly, whose 51-ball innings included half-a dozen boundaries, scored 38. Forty balls later, he was caught by Pollock. Crookes broke the 32-run stand.

Bharadwaj, whose 34-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 18. He was unbeaten, as was Dravid, who scored nine. His 19-ball innings included a couple of boundaries. South Africa conceded 19. The Indians, who scored 120 for the loss of a couple of wickets off 22.4 overs, won by eight wickets with 164 balls to spare.

Kallis, who bowled a wicketless over, conceded a dozen. Klusener and Pollock bowled three wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 19, the latter conceded 17. Elworthy bowled seven wicketless overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 14. Crookes, who bowled 8.4 overs, conceded 47. He picked up both the wickets that fell.
