(A)Jay India; Bangladesh are eliminated

India made seven changes to their playing eleven – Gagan Khoda, Sourav Ganguly, Hrishikesh Kanitkar, M S K Prasad, Ajit Agarkar, Rahul Sanghvi and Debasis Mohanty made way for Navjot Singh Sidhu, Sachin Tendulkar, Saba Karim, Anil Kumble, Venkatesh Prasad, Paras Mhambrey and Harbhajan Singh.

Bangladesh made three of changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – the Hossains (Sanwar and Mehrab) and Morshed Ali Khan made way for Akram Khan (who was leading the side, and chose to bat on winning the toss), Enamul Haque and Anisur Rahman.

Mohammad Rafique, whose 13-ball innings included a boundary, scored half-a-dozen. Twenty-seven balls into the match, he was caught by Karim. Prasad broke the 17-run stand. Athar Ali Khan, who faced 22 balls, didn’t get off the mark. Nine balls later, Mhambrey – who never represented India again – broke the one-run stand.

Minhajul Abedin, who faced eight balls, didn’t open his account. Fourteen balls later, he was caught by V V S Laxman. Prasad broke the three-run stand. Akram, who faced 32 balls, scored eight. Fifty-five balls, he was caught by Robin Singh, who broke the 32-run stand.

Aminul Islam, whose 38-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 18. Six balls later, he was caught by Ajay Jadeja, India’s skipper. Kumble, the player of the match, broke the two-run stand.

Although his 14-ball innings included a boundary, Khaled Mahmud had no reason to be in seventh heaven. Thirty-one balls later, he was caught by Karim. Prasad broke the 15-run stand. Naimur Rahman, whose 23-ball innings included a boundary, scored half-a-dozen. Five balls later, he was caught by Laxman. The (Kumb)leggie broke the one-run stand.

Khaled Mashud, whose 44-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 15. He was unbeaten. Haque, who faced nine balls, didn’t get off the mark. Fifteen dot balls later, he was caught by Karim off the (Jum)bowling of Kumble.

Hasibul, whose 20-ball (Hossa)innings included a couple of boundaries and the only six of the match, scored 21. Fifty-six balls later, Tendulkar broke the 44-run stand. The last-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Anisur, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. The next ball, he was caught by Rahul Dravid off the bowling of Tendulkar.

India conceded 34 extras. Bangladesh were bundled out for 115 off 36.3 overs. Harbhajan, who bowled four wicketless overs, conceded 18. Mhambrey and Robin bowled half-a-dozen overs, including a maiden, each, picking up a wicket apiece. While the former conceded 22, the latter conceded 16.

Tendulkar, who bowled nine balls, conceded eight. He picked up a couple of wickets. Prasad bowled nine overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 26, picking up three wickets. Kumble bowled 10 overs, including four maidens. He conceded 17, picking up three scalps.

Tendulkar, whose 29-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries, scored 33. Fifty-nine balls into the chase, he was caught by Islam. Athar broke the 72-run stand. Dravid, who faced 21 balls, scored just a run. Thirty-nine balls later, Rafique broke the 12-run stand.

Navjot Singh Sidhu, whose 52-ball innings included seven boundaries, scored 41. Nine balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Mahmud, who broke the six-run stand. Jadeja, whose 47-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 16. He was unbeaten.

Although his runs came by way of a boundary, Laxman, who scored four, had no reason to be in seventh heaven – 13 balls later, he was caught by Mashud. Mahmud broke the eight-run stand.

Karim, who faced 15 balls, scored eight. His runs came by way of boundaries. Five overs later, he was caught by Naimur. Rafique broke the nine-run stand. Robin, who broke the half-a-dozen balls, scored a run. He was unbeaten.

Bangladesh conceded a dozen extras. India, who scored 116 for the loss of five wickets off 29.2 overs, won by five wickets with 124 balls to spare. Anisur, who bowled three overs, conceded 26. He was wicketless, as was Hasibul, who bowled five overs, conceding 30.

Athar, who bowled four overs, conceded 24. He picked up a wicket. Mahmud bowled 7.2 overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded a dozen, picking up a couple of wickets. Rafique bowled 10 overs, including five maidens. He conceded 21, picking up a couple of scalps.
