Sri Lanka beat (Sach)inconsistent India

While India made no changes to their playing eleven, the Sri Lankans (Mahana)made five Chan(dana)ges to the eleven that last played the Indians – Aravinda de Silva, Arjuna Ranatunga, Roshan, Eric Upashantha and Pramodya Wickramasinghe made way for Avishka Gunawardene, Indika de Saram, Upul, Suresh Perera and Nuwan Zoysa.

On winning the toss, Sachin Tendulkar, India’s skipper, chose to bat. Their openers put on 49. Sourav Ganguly, whose 22-ball innings included a boundary, scored nine. Fifty-five balls into the match, Chaminda Vaas ran him out.

Rahul Dravid, whose 26-ball innings included a boundary, scored 22. Forty-one balls later, he was caught by Romesh Kaluwitharana. Vaas broke the 34-run stand. The third-wicket pair put on 10. Tendulkar, whose 58-ball innings included a boundary, scored 37. Twenty-one balls later, Muttiah (Muralitha)ran him out.

Amay Khurasiya, whose 48-ball innings included a boundary, scored 29. A hundred balls later, he was caught by de Saram. Chandana broke the 62-run partnership. Robin Singh, who faced 10 balls, scored four. Twenty balls later, he was caught by Vaas. Muralitharan broke the 14-run stand.

The sixth-wicket pair put on just a run. Mannava Prasad didn’t face a ball. A couple of balls later, Marvan Atapattu and Muralitharan ran him out. Ajay Jadeja, whose 85-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and the only six of the match, scored 49. Four balls (Mahe)later, he was caught by Jayawardene. Chandana broke the three-run stand.

Nikhil Chopra, who faced 26 balls, scored a dozen. He was unbeaten. The eighth-wicket pair put on nine. Anil Kumble, who faced 15 balls, scored three. Thirty-two balls later, Chandana and Kaluwitharana ran him out. Javagal Srinath, who faced 17 balls, scored a dozen. He was unbeaten.

Sri Lanka conceded 28 extras. India scored 205 for the loss of eight wickets off 50 overs (which included a five-ball over). Perera, who bowled five wicketless overs, conceded 32. Zoysa, who bowled eight wicketless overs, conceded 25. Sanath Jayasuriya, the Sri Lankan skipper, bowled nine wicketless overs, conceding 29.

Vaas, who bowled eight overs, conceded 46. He picked up a wicket, as did Muralitharan, who bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 31. Chandana, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 35. He picked up a couple of scalps.

Jayasuriya, whose 62-ball innings included eight boundaries, scored 61. A hundred and fifteen balls into the Ch(opr)ase, he was stumped by Mannava. The offie broke the 83-run partnership. Atapattu, whose 126-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries, scored 71. He was unbeaten.

Gunawardene, whose 16-ball innings included four boundaries, had no reason to be in seventh heaven – 26 balls later, he was caught by Mannava. Chopra broke the 17-run stand. Jayawadene, whose 34-ball innings included a boundary, scored 27. Fifty-five balls later, Singh broke the 48-run stand.

De Saram, whose 46-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 24. He was unbeaten. He was unbeaten. India conceded 16 extras. Sri Lanka, who scored 206 for the loss of three wickets off 46.4 overs, won by seven wickets with 20 balls to spare. Ganguly , who bowled 6.4 wicketless overs, conceded 31.

Kumble, who bowled eight wicketless overs, conceded 50. Venkatesh Prasad and Srinath bowled 10 wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 35, the latter conceded 28. Singh, who bowled three overs, conceded 28. He picked up a wicket. Chopra bowled nine overs, including two maidens. He conceded 37, picking up two scalps.
