Azhar’s back; Kenya beat India

India made five changes to their playing eleven – Ajay Jadeja, V V S Laxman, Saba Karim, Paras Mhambrey and Harbhajan Singh (Moha)made way for Azharuddin (who was leading the team), Nayan Mongia, Nilesh Kulkarni and a couple of One-day International debutants, Jatin Paranjpe and Nikhil Chopra.

Kenya (Chudasa)made a couple of changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Dipak and Tony Suji made way for Alpesh Vadher and Joseph Angara. On winning the toss, Aasif Karim, the Kenyan skipper, chose to bat.

Kennedy Otieno, whose 21-ball innings included a boundary, scored eight. Forty balls into the match, he was caught by Anil Kumble. Venkatesh Prasad broke the 26-run stand. Ravindu Shah, whose 68-ball innings included 11 boundaries and a six, scored 70. Seventy-six balls later, he was caught by the (Kumb)leggie, who broke the 67-run partnership.

The third-wicket pair puT(ikol)on 16. Steve, whose 46-ball (Sach)innings included a boundary, scored 21. Forty-one balls later, Robin Singh and Tendulkar ran him out. Hitesh Modi, whose 54-ball innings included three boundaries and a six, scored 51. A hundred and five balls later, he was caught by Rahul Dravid. Chopra broke the 100-run partnership.

Maurice Odumbe, the player of the match, scored 83. His 91-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and five sixes. Twenty-three balls later, he was caught by Navjot Singh Sidhu. Kumble broke the 40-run stand.

Vadher, whose 15-ball innings included a boundary, scored 13. He was unbeaten, as was Thomas Odoyo, who scored 11. He had a reason to be in seventh heaven – his innings included a boundary.

India conceded eight extras. Kenya scored 265 for the loss of five wickets off 50 overs. Tendulkar, who bowled five wicketless overs, conceded 34. Singh bowled five wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 18. Dravid, who bowled half-a-dozen wicketless overs, conceded 29. Kulkarni, who bowled 10 wicketless overs, conceded 60.

Prasad bowled half-a-dozen overs, including a maiden. He conceded 28, picking up a wicket. Chopra bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 65, picking up a wicket. Kumble bowled eight overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 27, picking up a couple of wickets.

Tendulkar, whose 25-ball (Mart)innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 18. Fifty balls into the chase, he was caught by Karim. Suji broke the 34-run stand. Although his innings included a couple of boundaries, Azharuddin, who scored nine, wasn’t in seventh heaven. Seventeen balls later, Angara broke the 13-run stand.

The third-wicket pair put on 15. Sidhu, whose 40-ball innings included a boundary, scored 27. Twenty-two balls later, Tony, the substitute, ran him out. Singh, who faced 25 balls, scored 11. Fifty balls later, he was caught by Shah. Tikolo broke the 35-run stand.

Dravid, whose 53-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 33. Sixteen balls later, he was caught by Vadher. Tikolo broke the nine-run stand. Paranjpe, the son of ex-Mumbai cricketer Vasu, scored 27. His 46-ball innings included a boundary. Seventy-one balls later, he was caught by Tikolo, who broke the 44-run stand.

The seventh-wicket pair put on five. Chopra, who faced five balls, scored three. Ten balls later, Martin and Odumbe ran him out. The eighth-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Mongia, whose 39-ball innings included a boundary, scored 21. A couple of balls later, he was caught by Tikolo off Odumbe’s bowling.

Kumble, whose run-a-ball innings included the only six of the innings, scored 20. Thirty-five balls later, Odumbe broke the 34-run stand. Prasad, whose 20-ball innings included a boundary, scored 19. Ten balls later, Odumbe had a reason to be in seventh heaven. Kulkarni, who faced five balls, scored a run. He was unbeaten.

Kenya conceded seven extras. India, who were dismissed for 196 off 47.1 overs, lost by 69 runs. Odoyo, who bowled four wicketless overs, conceded 24. Sheikh, who bowled half-a-dozen wicketless overs, conceded 24. Karim bowled eight wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 33.

Angara bowled half-a-dozen overs, including a maiden. He conceded 19, picking up a wicket. Martin, who bowled nine overs, conceded 50. He picked up a wicket. Odumbe bowled 4.1 overs, conceding 14. He picked up three scalps, as did Tikolo, who bowled 10 overs, conceding 29.

With both the teams advancing, it was the dress rehearsal for the final.
