India (Azh)are victorious; The hostSLose

While India made no changes to their playing eleven, Sri Lanka (Mahana)made a couple of changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Avishka Gunawardene and Suresh Perera made way for Roshan and Niroshan Bandaratilleke.

On winning the toss, Mohammad Azharuddin, India’s skipper, chose to bat. Tendulkar, the player of the match, scored 128. His 131-ball (Sach)innings included eight boundaries and a couple of sixes. Forty-four overs into the match, he was stumped by Romesh Kaluwitharana. Sanath Jayasuriya broke the 252-run partnership. 

It broke the record for the highest first-wicket partnership in One-day Internationals. They bettered it in 2001. The Little Master passed the 7,000-run mark in the shorter format, and equalled West Indian Desmond Haynes’ record for the most centuries in ODIs (17).

The second-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. On the eve of his 26th birthday, Sourav Ganguly scored 109. His 136-ball innings included half-a-boundaries and a couple of sixes. The next ball, he was caught by Muttiah Muralitharan off his own bowling.

Azharuddin, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored five. Eleven balls later, Upul Chandana broke the 10-run stand. The fourth-wicket pair put on 35. Singh, whose eight-ball (Rob)innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 15. Sixteen balls later, Jayasuriya ran him out.

The fifth-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Ajay Jadeja, whose 15-ball innings included a couple of sixes, scored 15. The next ball, he was bowled by Jayasuriya. The sixth-wicket pair put on 10. Ajit Agarkar, who faced three balls, scored five. Kaluwitharana had a reason to be in seventh heaven – he ran him out.

Hrishikesh Kanitkar, who faced four balls, scored five. He was unbeaten. Sri Lanka conceded 15 extras. India scored 307 for the loss of six wickets off 50 overs. Bandaratilleke, who bowled five wicketless overs, conceded 36. Aravinda de Silva, the player of the series, bowled half-a-dozen wicketless overs, conceded 32.

Pramodya Wickramasinghe, who bowled seven wicketless overs, conceded 43. Kumar Dharmasena, who bowled 10 wicketless overs, conceded 67. Chandana, who bowled five overs, conceded 33. He picked up a wicket, as did Muralitharan, who bowled eight overs, conceding 51. Jayasuriya, who bowled nine overs, conceded 42. He picked up two wickets.

Jayasuriya, whose 25-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and a six, scored 32. Fifty balls into the chase, he was caught by Ganguly. Agarkar broke the 59-run partnership. Kaluwitharana, whose 36-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 24. Sixteen balls later, Agarkar broke the 14-run stand.

Marvan Atapattu, whose 51-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 39. Eighty-eight balls later, he was caught by Venkatesh Prasad. Harbhajan Singh broke the 87-run partnership.

Arjuna Ranatunga, Sri Lanka’s skipper, scored 23. His 22-ball innings included a boundary and a six. Thirty-balls later, he was caught by Nayan Mongia. Agarkar broke the 37-run stand. De Silva, whose 94-ball innings included 10 boundaries, scored 105. Seventy-one balls later, he was caught by Harbhajan. Agarkar broke the 75-run partnership.

Chandana, who faced nine balls, scored four. Twelve balls later, Anil Kumble broke the eight-run stand. Dharmasena, who faced five balls, scored a couple. Prasad had a reason to be in seventh heaven – he trapped him leg before wicket, breaking the run-a-ball stand.

The eighth-wicket pair put on eight. Mahanama, whose 49-ball innings included a boundary, scored 44. Eight balls later, Jadeja ran him out. The ninth-wicket pair put on three. Bandaratilleke, who faced two balls, didn’t get off the mark. Five balls later, Mongia ran him out.

The last-wicket pair put on three. Wickramasinghe, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored five. Four balls later, Kanitkar ran him out. Muralitharan, who faced three balls, scored a run. He was unbeaten.

India conceded 22 extras. Sri Lanka, who were dismissed for 301 off 49.3 overs, lost by six runs. Tendulkar, who bowled a wicketless over, conceded 13. Kanitkar, who bowled four wicketless overs, conceded 24. Robin, who bowled five wicketless overs, conceded 25. Kumble, who bowled 9.3 overs, conceded 57. He picked up a wicket.

Harbhajan and Prasad bowled 10 overs each, picking up a wicket apiece. While the former conceded 57, the latter conceded 56. Agarkar, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 53. He picked up four scalps. 

India won the 1998 Singer-Akai Nidahas Trophy.
