WI (Sour)avenge loss to India

It was a 25-overs-a-side match. India made just one change to their playing eleven – Sachin Tendulkar made way for V V S Laxman. The West Indies made a change to the eleven that last played the Indians – Ryan Hinds made way for Pedro Collins.

On winning the toss, Sourav Ganguly, India’s skipper, chose to bat. Virender Sehwag, who faced a ball, didn’t get off the mark. Three balls into the match, he was caught by Brian Lara. Mervyn broke the (Dill)one-run stand.

Dinesh Mongia, whose 12-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 13. Thirty-three balls later, he was caught by Cameron Cuffy, who broke the 44-run stand.

The third-wicket pair put on eight. Fourteen balls later, Carl Hooper, the West Indies’ skipper, ran him out. Yuvraj Sigh, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored a run. Half-a-dozen balls later, he was caught by Ridley Jacobs. Collins broke the three-run stand.

Ganguly, whose 44-ball innings included five boundaries and a six, scored 39. Twenty balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Corey Collymore, who broke the 10-run stand.

Mohammad Kaif, whose 17-ball innings included a boundary, scored a dozen. Twenty-two balls later, he was caught by Chris Gayle, the player of the match. Collymore broke the 20-run stand.

The seventh-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Ajit Agarkar, who faced a couple of balls, didn’t open his account. A couple of balls later, he was caught by Jacobs off the bowling of Collymore.

Rahul Dravid, whose 36-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and a six, scored 26. Thirty-two balls later, Hooper broke the 24-run stand.

Zaheer Khan, who faced 16 balls, had no reason to be in seventh heaven – seven balls later, Hooper broke the eight-run stand. 

Harbhajan Singh, whose nine-ball innings included a boundary, scored half-a-dozen. Eleven balls later, he was caught by Jacobs. Collins broke the five-run stand. Tinu Yohannan, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored a couple. He was unbeaten.

The West Indies scored 13 extras. India were dismissed for 123 off 25 overs. The five bowlers used bowled five overs each. Cuffy and Dillon picked up a wicket apiece. While the former conceded 40, the latter conceded 24.

Collins and Hooper picked up a couple of wickets apiece. While the former conceded 21, the latter conceded 19. Collymore, whose spell included a maiden. He conceded 14, picking up three scalps.

Wavell Hinds, whose 45-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and a six, scored 30. A hundred and eight balls into the chase, Yohannan broke the 117-run partnership. 

The second-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Gayle, whose 67-ball innings included nine boundaries and three sixes, scored 84. The next ball, he was caught by Ganguly off the bowling of Khan.

Ramnaresh Sarwan, who faced five balls, scored a run. Half-a-dozen balls later, Yohannan broke the one-run stand. Lara, who faced 17 balls, scored four. He was unbeaten, as was Hooper, who faced a couple of balls, scoring a run.

India conceded four extras. The hosts, who scored 124 for the loss of three wickets off 22.1 overs, won by seven WIckets with 17 balls to spare. Sehwag bowled 3.1 wicketless overs, conceding 24.

Agarkar bowled four wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 14. Harbhajan bowled five wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 22. Khan, who bowled five overs, conceded 14. He picked up a wicket. Yohannan, who bowled five overs, conceded 50. He picked up a couple of scalps.

The five-match series was levelled 1-1.
