While India made no changes to their playing eleven, South Africa made four changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Gary Kirsten, Neil McKenzie, Justin Kemp and Nantie Hayward made way for Graeme Smith, Boeta Dippenaar, (Peters)One-day International debutant Robin and Allan Donald.

On winning the toss, Sourav Ganguly, India’s skipper, chose to bat. He scored 13. His run-a-ball innings included three boundaries. Thirty-four balls later, he was caught by Dippenaar. Makhaya Ntini broke the 42-run stand.

V V S Laxman, whose 33-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 22. Sixty-three balls later, he was caught by Mark Boucher. Donald broke the 60-run partnership. Virender Sehwag, the player of the match, scored 59. His 58-ball innings included 10 boundaries. Ten balls later, he was caught by Lance Klusener. Jacques Kallis broke the six-run stand.

The fourth-wicket pair put on 27. Tendulkar, whose 29-ball (Sach)innings included a boundary, scored 16. Forty-five balls later, Boucher and Jonty Rhodes ran him out. Rahul Dravid, whose 67-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 49. Ninety-three balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Klusener, who broke the 72-run partnership.

Yuvraj Singh, whose 72-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries, scored 62. Forty-four balls later, he was caught by Herschelle Gibbs. Shaun Pollock, the South African skipper, broke the 47-run stand.

The seventh-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Mohammad Kaif, whose 21-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 19. The next ball, he was caught by Rhodes off the bowling of Pollock.

Zaheer Khan, who faced three balls, didn’t get off the mark. Four balls later, he was caught by Smith. Pollock broke the one-run stand. Harbhajan Singh, who faced four balls, scored as many. Five balls later, Donald broke the run-a-ball stand. Anil Kumble, who faced a couple of balls, scored as many. He was unbeaten, as was Ashish Nehra, who faced a ball, scoring as many.

South Africa conceded 14 extras. India scored 261 for the loss of nine wickets off 50 overs. Peterson, who bowled 10 wicketless overs, conceded 47. Nitini, who bowled five overs, conceded 37. He picked up a wicket.

Kallis bowled eight overs, including a maiden. He conceded 50, picking up a wicket. Klusener, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 40. He picked up a wicket. Donald who bowled eight overs, conceded 41. He picked up a couple of wickets. Pollock, who bowled nine overs, conceded 43. He picked up three scalps.

Smith, who faced five balls, scored four. His runs came by way of a boundary. Eighteen balls later, he was caught by Yuvraj. Khan broke the 14-run stand. The second-wicket pair had put on 178 when Gibbs, who scored 116, retired hurt. His 119-ball innings included 16 boundaries.

Gibbs' second-wicket partnership with Kallis was a new partnership record for South Africa against India. It broke the 120-run partnership between Gary Kirsten and Daryll Cullinan in Hamilton in 1994/95.

The second-wicket pair put on just a couple of runs after Gibbs retired. Rhodes, who faced three balls, scored a run. Two hundred and twelve balls later, he was caught by Yuvraj off the bowling of Harbhajan.

The third-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Dippenaar, who faced three balls, didn’t open his account. Three balls later, he was caught by Kumble off the bowling of Harbhajan. Boucher, who faced 16 balls, scored 10. Twenty-eight balls later, he was caught by Yuvraj. Sehwag broke the 19-run stand.

Kallis, whose 133-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries and the only six of the match, scored 97. Thirty-five balls later, he was caught by Dravid. Sehwag broke the 34-run stand.

Klusener, who faced 21 balls, scored 14. Four balls later, he was caught by Kaif. Sehwag broke the run-a-ball stand. Pollock, who didn’t face a ball, was unbeaten.

India conceded nine extras. South Africa, who scored 251 for the loss of half-a-dozen wickets off 50 overs, lost by 10 runs. Ganguly bowled 1.3 wicketless overs, conceding 15. Yuvraj bowled three wicketless overs, conceding 17. Tendulkar bowled four wicketless overs, conceding 32.

Nehra bowled 7.3 wicketless overs, conceding 41. Kumble bowled 10 wicketless overs, conceding 53. Khan bowled nine overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 27, picking up a wicket. Harbhajan bowled 10 overs, conceding 37. He picked up a couple of wickets. Sehwag bowled five overs, conceding 25. He picked up three scalps.

The Indians advanced.
