Ganguly-led India beat the iSLanders

India made just one change to their playing eleven – Harbhajan Singh made way for Ashish Nehra. Sri Lanka made four Chan(dana)ges to the eleven that last played the Indians – Avishka Gunawardene, Kumar Dharmasena, Suresh Perera and Muttiah Muralitharan made way for Naveed Nawaz, Upul, Nuwan Zoysa and Charitha Buddhika.

On winning the toss, Sanath Jayasuriya, Sri Lanka’s skipper, chose to bat. Romesh Kaluwitharana, whose 19-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 15. Forty-three balls into the match, he was caught by Rahul Dravid. Ajit Agarkar, the player of the match, broke the 42-run stand.

Jayasuriya, whose 38-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries and the only six of the innings, scored 36. Twenty-seven balls later, he was caught by Dravid. Agarkar broke the 23-run stand.

The third-wicket pair did not get off the mark. Although his 14-ball innings included a boundary, Marvan Atapattu had no reason to be in seventh heaven – three balls later, he was dismissed by Zaheer Khan. 

Russel Arnold, whose 10-ball innings included a boundary, scored half-a-dozen. Twenty balls later, he was caught by Dravid. Agarkar broke the 13-run stand. Nawaz, whose 26-ball innings included a boundary, scored 11. Fifty balls later, he was caught by Virender Sehwag. Sourav Ganguly, India’s skipper, broke the 19-run stand.

Chandana, whose 42-ball innings included a boundary, scored 18. Eighty-eight balls later, he was caught by Mohammad Kaif. Nehra broke the 43-run stand. Jayawardene, whose 105-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 62. Forty-six balls (Mahe)later, he was caught by Khan, who broke the 42-run stand.

Chaminda Vaas, whose 37-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 26. He was unbeaten. Zoysa, who faced four balls, scored as many. His runs came by way of a boundary. Four balls later, he was caught by Kaif. Khan broke the run-a-ball stand. Buddhika who faced half-a-dozen boundaries, scored four. He was unbeaten.

India conceded 13 extras. Sri Lanka conceded 202 for the loss of eight wickets off 50 overs. Sehwag, who bowled an over, conceded a couple. He was wicketless, as was Anil Kumble, who bowled 10 overs, conceding 43.

Nehra, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 29. He picked up a wicket. Ganguly bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 28, picking up a wicket. Agarkar bowled nine overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 44, picking up three wickets. Khan bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 48, picking up three scalps.

Although his 10-ball innings included a boundary, Ganguly had no reason to be in seventh heaven – 18 balls into the chase, he was trapped leg before wicket by Vaas, who broke the 17-run stand.

Sehwag, whose 20-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored a dozen. Twenty-three balls later, he was caught by Jayasuriya. Vaas broke the nine-run stand. Dinesh Mongia, whose 55-ball innings included three boundaries and a six, scored 33. Eighty-one balls later, he was caught by Vaas. Dilhara Fernando broke the 71-run partnership.

Dravid, who faced 26 balls, scored eight. Forty-three balls later, Chandana broke the 16-run stand. Tendulkar, whose 70-ball (Sach)innings included three boundaries and a six, scored 49. Thirty balls later, he was caught by Kaluwitharana. Zoysa broke the 22-run stand.

Yuvraj Singh, whose 44-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 31. Sixty-three balls later, he was caught by the substitute, Chamara Silva. Fernando broke the 60-run partnership.

Kaif, whose 44-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 38. He was unbeaten. Agarkar, whose innings included a boundary, had a reason to be in seventh heaven – he was unbea‘ten’.

Sri Lanka conceded 18 extras. India, who scored 203 for the loss of six wickets off 45.2 overs, won by four wickets with 28 balls to spare.

Arnold, who bowled a couple of wicketless balls, conceded a couple. Jayasuriya, who bowled a couple of wicketless overs, conceded five. Buddhika, who bowled three wicketless overs, conceded 11.

Zoysa, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 46. He picked up a wicket. Chandana bowled 10 overs including a maiden. He conceded 46, picking up a wicket. Fernando bowled 10 overs, conceding 53, He picked up a couple of wickets. Vaas bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 53, picking up a couple of scalps.
