Ganguly-led India crush South Africa

India made one change to their playing eleven – Aavishkar Salvi made way for One-day International debutant Amit Mishra.

South Africa made four changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Jacques Kallis, Jonty Rhodes, Lance Klusener and Allan Donald made way for One-day International debutant Jacques Rudolph, Neil McKenzie, Alan Dawson and Charl Willoughby.

On winning the toss, Sourav Ganguly, India’s skipper, chose to bat. Gautam Gambhir, whose 30-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 18. Eight overs into the match, he was caught by Mark Boucher. Makhaya Ntini broke the 45-run stand.

Virender Sehwag, whose 44-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries, scored 37. Forty-nine balls later, he was caught by Rudolph. Dawson broke the 44-run stand.

Ganguly, whose 80-ball innings included seven boundaries and a couple of sixes, scored 75. 
A hundred and ten balls later, he was caught by McKenzie. Dawson broke the 86-run partnership.

Mohammad Kaif, the player of the the match, scored 95. His 103-ball innings included seven boundaries and three sixes. He was unbeaten.

The fourth-wicket pair put on 22. Yuvraj Singh, whose 12-ball innings included a boundary, scored a dozen. Twenty-three balls later, Herschelle Gibbs and Dawson ran him out. Dinesh Mongia, whose 38-ball innings included half-a-dozen balls, scored 55. He was unbeaten.

South Africa conceded 16 extras. India scored 307 for the loss of four wickets off 50 overs. Graeme, South Africa’s skipper, bowled (Smi)three wicketless overs, conceded 20. His second-wicket – the 36th over of the Indian innings – was called a seven-ball over by New Zealand’s umpire Billy Bowden. 

Robin Peterson, who bowled eight wicketless overs, conceded 56. Shaun Pollock, who bowled nine wicketless overs, conceded 54. Willoughby, who bowled 10 wicketless overs, conceded 77.

Ntini, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 51. He picked up a wicket. His spell included a seven-ball over. Dawson, who bowled 10 overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 46, picking up a couple of scalps.

Smith, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored a run. A dozen balls later, Ajit Agarkar broke the five-run stand. Rudolph scored four. His 10-ball innings included a boundary. Twenty-two balls later, he was caught by Sehwag. Agarkar broke the eight-run stand.

Gibbs, whose 42-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 26. Forty-eight balls later, he was caught by Harbhajan Singh, who broke the 32-run stand. Boeta Dippenaar, whose 26-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 22. Half-a-dozen balls later, he was caught by Yuvraj. Ganguly broke the two-run stand.

McKenzie, who faced 33 balls, scored a dozen. Forty-eight balls later, he was caught by Parthiv Patel. Mishra broke the 29-ball stand. Pollock, who faced five balls, scored a couple. Eight balls later, he was caught by Mongia. Harbhajan broke the three-run stand.

Peterson, whose 15-ball innings included a boundary, scored a dozen. Thirty-two balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Ganguly, who broke the 40-run stand. Boucher, whose 59-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 48. Twenty-two balls later, he was caught by Kaif. Sehwag broke the 19-run stand.

Although he was unbeaten, Dawson, whose five-ball innings included a boundary, had no reason to be in seventh heaven. The man who batted at number 10 scored five. His (Nti)nine-ball innings included a boundary. Nine balls later, Sehwag broke the six-run stand.

The last-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Willoughby, who faced a couple of balls, didn’t open his account. A couple of dot balls later, he was stumped by Patel off the bowling of Sehwag.

India conceded 15 extras. South Africa, who were dismissed for 154 off 34.5 overs, lost by 153 runs. Khan bowled 4.5 wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded eight. Mishra, who bowled five overs, conceded 29. He picked up a wicket.

Agarkar, who bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceded 27. He picked up a couple of wickets. Harbhajan, who bowled seven overs, conceded 22. He picked up a couple of wickets. Ganguly, who bowled 8.1 overs, conceded 30. He picked up a couple of wickets. Sehwag, who bowled 3.5 overs, conceded 28. He picked up three scalps.
