Ganguly-led India aren’t the WInners

India made three changes to their playing eleven – Dinesh Mongia, Sachin Tendulkar and Zaheer Khan made way for V V S Laxman, One-day International debutant Jai Prakash Yadav and Ashish Nehra.

The West Indies made four changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Brian Lara, Ryan Hinds, Corey Collymore and Cameron Cuffy made way for Marlon Samuels, Mahendra Nagamootoo, Pedro Collins and Vasbert Drakes.

Sourav Ganguly, India's skipper, chose to bat on winning the toss. Virender Sehwag, whose 26-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 28. Fifty-one balls later, he was caught by Drakes, who broke the 43-run stand.

Ganguly, whose 33-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 16. Nineteen balls later, Collins broke the six-run stand. While India’s 50 came off 12.1 overs, their 100 came off 20.1 overs. Laxman, whose 67-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 47. A hundred and twenty balls later, Nagamootoo broke the 98-run partnership.

While India’s 150 came off 32.2 overs, their 200 came off 37.4 overs. Ajit Agarkar, whose 102-ball innings included 11 boundaries and a couple of sixes, scored 95. His 50 – which included half-a-dozen boundaries and a six – came off 61 balls. Sixty-one balls later, he was caught by Chris Gayle. Collins broke the 75-run partnership.

Rahul Dravid, whose 42-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 46. He was unbeaten. Yuvraj Singh, who faced eight balls, scored four. Fifteen balls later, he was caught by Gayle. Carl Hooper, the West Indies' skipper, broke the 13-run stand. Yadav, who faced five balls, didn’t get off the mark. Half-a-dozen balls later, Mervyn broke the (Dill)one-run stand.

India’s 250 came off 47.1 overs. Mohammad Kaif, whose 18-ball innings included five boundaries, scored 31. He was unbeaten. The West Indies conceded 16 extras. India scored 283 for the loss of half-a-dozen wickets off 50 overs.

Gayle, who bowled a couple of wicketless overs, conceded 16. Nagamootoo, who bowled eight overs, conceded 45. He picked up a wicket. Dillon, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 64. He picked up a wicket.

Drakes bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 62, picking up a wicket. Hooper bowled 10 overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 46, picking up a wicket. Collins bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 40, picking up a couple of scalps.

Although his 15-ball innings included a boundary, Gayle had no reason to be in seventh heaven – 31 balls later, he was caught by Yadav. Agarkar broke the 28-run stand.

While the West Indies’ 50 came off nine overs, their 100 came off 18.5 overs. Samuels, whose 60-ball innings included eight boundaries, scored 51. His 50 came off 58 balls. Ninety-four balls later, Anil Kumble broke the 86-run partnership.

While the West Indies’ 150 came off 28.3 overs, their 200 came off 38.2 overs. Wavell Hinds, whose 107-ball innings included a dozen boundaries and a couple of sixes, scored 93. His 50 – which included 11 boundaries – came off 53 balls. A hundred and seven balls later, he was caught by Dravid. Nehra broke the 87-run partnership.

Ramnaresh Sarwan, the player of the match, scored 83. His 89-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries and three sixes. His 50 – which included three boundaries and a six – came off 64 balls. He was unbeaten.

Hooper, who faced five balls, scored four. Half-a-dozen balls later, he was caught by Yadav. Sehwag broke the five-run stand. The West Indies’ 250 came off 45.5 overs. Shivnarine Chanderpaul, whose 23-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 18. Fifty-one balls later, he was caught by Ganguly. Nehra broke the 71-run partnership.

The sixth-wicket pair put on a couple. Ridley Jacobs, who faced five balls, didn’t open his account. Eight balls later, Agarkar ran him out. Nagamootoo, who faced a ball, scored a run. He was unbeaten.

India conceded 23 extras. The West Indies, who scored 285 for the loss of half-a-dozen wickets off 50 overs, won by four wickets. Yuvraj, who bowled two wicketless overs, conceded 11. Yadav, who bowled four wicketless overs, conceded 22. Harbhajan, who bowled nine wicketless overs, conceded 68.

The (Kumb)leggie bowled seven overs, conceding 48. He picked up a wicket. Agarkar bowled nine overs, including a maiden. He conceded 42, picking up a wicket. Sehwag bowled 10 overs, conceding 37. He picked up a wicket. Nehra bowled nine overs, including a maiden. He conceded 50, picking up a couple of scalps.

The West Indies led the seven-match series 1-0.
