Dada-led India WIn, level series

India made a couple of changes to their playing eleven – Ajit Agarkar and Jai Prakash Yadav made way for Sanjay Bangar and Murali Kartik (who represented Railways in the Ranji Trophy, as did Yadav).

The West Indies made (Ricar)do changes to the eleven that the last played the Indians – Powell and Cameron Cuffy made way for Carl Hooper (who was leading the team) and Pedro Collins.

On winning the toss, Sourav Ganguly, India's skipper, inserted the visitors. Wavell Hinds, whose 24-ball innings included three boundaries and a six, scored 26. Nine overs into the match, he was caught by Rahul Dravid. Javagal Srinath broke the 80-run partnership.

The second-wicket pair put on 10. Marlon Samuels, who faced 14 balls, scored just five. Twenty-seven balls later, Mohammad Kaif and Harbhajan Singh ran him out.

Chris Gayle, the player of the match, scored 140. His 127-ball innings included a dozen boundaries and five sixes. A hundred and fifty-three balls later, he was caught by Kartik. Virender Sehwag broke the 148-run partnership.

Ramnaresh Sarwan, whose 104-ball innings included eight boundaries, scored 99. He was unbeaten. Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who faced five balls, scored three. Eighteen balls later, he was caught by the substitute, Dinesh Mongia. Harbhajan Singh broke the 20-run stand. Hooper, whose 27-ball innings included five boundaries, scored 36. He was unbeaten.

India conceded 15 extras. The West Indies scored 324 for the loss of four wickets off 50 overs. Bangar and Ganguly bowled a wicketless over apiece. While the former conceded 13, the latter conceded nine. Ashish Nehra, who bowled five wicketless overs, conceded 53. Yuvraj Singh, who bowled half-a-dozen wicketless overs, conceded 48.

Kartik, who bowled 10 wicketless overs, conceded 46. Sehwag, who bowled eight overs, conceded 49. He picked up a wicket. Srinath bowled nine overs, including a maiden. He conceded 71, picking up a wicket. Harbhajan bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 30, picking up a wicket.

Sehwag, who faced three balls, scored four. His runs came by way of a boundary. Four balls into the chase, he was caught by Hooper. Mervyn Dillon broke the five-run stand. Ganguly, whose 16-ball innings included three boundaries and a six, scored 28. Twenty-nine balls later, he was caught by Ridley Jacobs. Collins broke the 40-run stand.

The third-wicket pair put on 103. V V S Laxman, whose 74-ball innings included eight boundaries, scored 66. A hundred and eighteen balls later, Powell, the substitute, and Hooper ran him out. Dravid, whose 124-ball innings included eight boundaries, scored 109. He was unbeaten.

Yuvraj, whose run-a-ball innings included a boundary and a six, scored 30. Fifty-three balls, he was caught by Hooper. Dillon broke the 61-run partnership. Kaif, who faced 10 balls, scored eight. Twenty-one balls later, he was caught by Powell. Vasbert Drakes broke the 22-run stand.

Bangar, whose 41-ball innings included five boundaries and a couple of sixes, scored 57. He was unbeaten. The West Indies conceded 23. India, who scored 325 for the loss of five wickets off 47.4 overs, won by five wickets with 14 runs to spare.

Gayle bowled a wicketless over, conceding 15. Mahendra Nagamootoo and Hooper bowled nine wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 62, the latter conceded 61.

Collins bowled nine overs, conceding 60. He picked up a wicket. Drakes, who bowled 9.4 overs, conceded 60. He picked up a wicket. Dillon, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 65. He picked up two scalps. His third over was a five-ball over.

India levelled the seven-match series 2-2.
