Sehwag leads; India beat Bangladesh

India made four changes to their playing eleven – Sourav Ganguly, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer Khan made way for Sanjay Bangar, One-day International debutant Abhijit Kale, Aavishkar Salvi and Sarandeep Singh.

Bangladesh made three changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Tushar Imran, Sanwar Hossain and Manjural Islam made way for Habibul Bashar, Javed Omar and Tareq Aziz. On winning the toss, Mahmud, who (Kha)led the team, chose to bat.

Although his 12-ball innings included a boundary, Mohammad Ashraful had no reason to be in seventh heaven – four overs into the match, Ajit Agarkar broke the 15-run stand. Mehrab, whose 35-ball (Hossa)innings included half-a-dozen boundaries, scored 30. Forty-nine balls later, he was caught by Agarkar. Bangar broke the 34-run stand.

Omar, who faced five balls, scored a run. Eleven balls later, he was caught by Sarandeep, who broke the four-run stand. Alok Kapali, who faced 25 balls, scored nine. Forty-four balls later, he was caught by Dinesh Mongia. Sarandeep broke the 25-run stand.

Bashar, whose 94-ball innings included five boundaries, scored 50. Eighty-three balls later, he was caught by Mohammad Kaif. Agarkar broke the 46-run stand. Khaled Mashud, who faced 14 balls, scored a dozen. Nineteen balls later, he was caught by Parthiv Patel. Amit Mishra broke the 15-run stand.

Akram Khan, whose 61-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 35. Twenty-seven balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Virender Sehwag, India’s stand-in skipper, who broke the 24-run stand. Mohammad Rafique, who faced 10 balls, scored four. Nineteen balls later, Salvi broke the run-a-ball stand.

The ninth-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Mahmud, whose 29-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 23. The next ball, he was caught by Sehwag off the bowling of Agarkar. The last-wicket pair put on 25. Baisya, whose 13-ball innings included a boundary, scored 15. Twenty-one balls later, the leggie, Patel and Bangar (Mish)ran him out.

Aziz, who faced eight balls, scored three. He was unbeaten. India conceded 18 extras. Bangladesh were dismissed for 207 off 49.4 overs. Sehwag, who bowled a couple of overs, conceded 11. He picked up a wicket.

Bangar, who bowled 8.4 overs, conceded 31. He picked up a wicket. Mishra bowled nine overs, including a maiden. He conceded 38, picking up a wicket. Salvi, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 51. He picked up a wicket. 

Sarandeep, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 34. He picked up a couple of wickets. Agarkar bowled 10 overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 36, picking up three scalps.

Sehwag, whose 44-ball innings included eight boundaries, scored 43. Seventy-one balls into the chase, he was caught by Aziz. Rafique broke the 69-run partnership.

Patel, whose 51-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 27. Seventy-six balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Kapali, who broke the 48-run stand.

The third-wicket pair put on 47. Kaif, whose 28-ball innings included a boundary and a six, scored 20. Fifty-two balls later, Kapali and Hossain ran him out. Bangar, who faced 11 balls, had no reason to be in seventh heaven – 21 balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Rafique, who broke the 14-run stand.

The fifth-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Gautam Gambhir, the player of the match, scored 71. His 89-ball innings included nine boundaries. Three balls later, he was caught by Mashud off the bowling of Kapali.

Kale, who never represented India again, scored 10. His 22-ball innings included a boundary. Thirty-two balls later, he was caught by Mahmud. Ashraful broke the 26-run stand. Mongia, whose 12-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 16. He was unbeaten, as was Agarkar, who faced a couple of balls, scoring four. His runs came by way of a boundary.

Bangladesh conceded 10 extras. India, who scored 208 for the loss of half-a-dozen wickets off 42.5 overs, won by four wickets with 43 balls to spare. Hossain, who faced a couple of wicketless overs, conceded 10.

Aziz, who bowled four wicketless overs, conceded 31. Mahmud, who bowled seven wicketless overs, conceded 22. Baisya, who bowled eight wicketless overs, conceded 42.

Ashraful, who bowled 3.5 overs, conceded 19. He picked up a wicket. Kapali bowled eight wickets, including a maiden. He conceded 41, picking up a couple of wickets. Rafique, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 42. He picked up a couple of scalps.
