The Ganguly-led IndiaNZ concede series

India made three changes to their playing (Pat)eleven – V V S Laxman, Sanjay Bangar and Harbhajan Singh made way for Dinesh Mongia, One-day International debutant Parthiv and Ashish Nehra.

New Zealand made a couple of changes to their playing eleven – Lou Vincent and Paul Hitchcock made way for Scott Styris and Paul Adams.

While Rakesh Patel was India’s twelfth man, Chris Harris was New Zealand’s twelfth man. On winning the toss, Stephen Fleming, New Zealand’s skipper, inserted the visitors.

Their openers batted for 45 minutes. Virender Sehwag, whose 39-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 23. Sixty-eight balls into the match, he was caught by Nathan Astle. Adams, the player of the match, broke the 38-run stand.

India’s 50 came off 83 balls in 56 minutes. They scored 52 off 14.3 overs in the first hour. Their second-wicket pair batted off 19 minutes. Rahul Dravid, whose 52-ball innings included a boundary, scored 18. Twenty-eight balls later, Adams broke the 17-run stand.

The third-wicket pair batted for nine minutes. Mohammad Kaif, who faced four balls, didn’t get off the mark. Ten balls later, he was caught by Craig McMillan. Adams broke the two-run stand.

The fourth-wicket pair batted for eight minutes. Mongia, whose 20-ball innings included a boundary, scored a dozen. Ten balls later, he was caught by Daniel Vettori. Adams broke the run-a-ball stand.

The fifth-wicket pair batted for half-a-dozen minutes. Sourav Ganguly, India’s skipper, faced 13 balls, scoring a couple. Ten balls later, he was caught by Kyle Mills. Daryl Tuffey broke the two-run stand.

The sixth-wicket pair batted for 35 minutes. Parthiv, whose 31-ball innings included a boundary, scored 13. Nine overs later, Mills broke the 25-run stand.

India scored 34 off 13.3 overs in the second hour. Their 100 came off 195 balls in 135 minutes. The seventh-wicket pair, who batted for eight minutes, put on half-a-dozen. Ajit Agarkar, who faced three balls, did not open his account. Eleven balls later, Mathew Sinclair and Brendon McCullum ran him out.

The eighth-wicket pair batted for a dozen minutes. Zaheer Khan, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored a run. Sixteen balls later, he was caught by McCullum. Needless to say, Tuffey was in seventh heaven.

The ninth-wicket pair batted for 21 minutes. Yuvraj Singh, whose 61-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 25. Thirty-two balls later, he was caught by Tuffey. Styris broke the 11-run stand. Javagal Srinath, whose 29-ball innings included a boundary, was unbea‘ten’.

The last-wicket pair batted for 14 minutes. They scored 33 off 13.4 overs in the third hour. Nehra, who faced 10 balls, didn’t get off the mark. Twenty-three balls later, he was caught by McCullum. Adams broke the four-run stand.

New Zealand conceded 18 extras. India scored 122 off 43,4 overs. Vettori, who bowled a couple of overs, conceded as many. He was wicketless, as was Jacob, who bowled 10 overs, including (Or)amaiden. He conceded 28.

Styris bowled three overs, including a maiden. He conceded five, picking up a wicket. Mills bowled 10 overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 28, picking up a wicket.

Tuffey, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 36, He picked up a couple of wickets. Adams bowled 8.4 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 22, picking up five scalps.

New Zealand’s openers batted for 21 minutes. Astle, whose run-a-ball innings included a boundary, scored 15. Twenty-seven balls into the chase, he was caught by Dravid. Srinath broke the 28-run stand.

While their 50 came off 63 balls in 47 minutes, their 100 came off 120 balls in 91 minutes. They scored 68 off 13 overs in the first hour. The second-wicket pair, who batted for 70 minutes, put on 50 off 66 balls in 48 minutes. 

Fleming, whose 59-ball innings included five boundaries and the only six of the match, scored 47. Ninety-two balls later, he was caught by Sehwag. Srinath broke the 73-run partnership.

Sinclair, whose 63-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 32. He was unbeaten. The third-wicket pair batted for half-a-dozen minutes. McMillan, who faced a couple of balls, didn’t get off the mark. A couple of balls later, Srinath broke the two-run stand. 

The fourth-wicket pair batted for 20 minutes, putting on 20. The 27-ball stand was unbroken. Styris, whose 17-ball innings included a boundary, scored eight. He was unbeaten. New Zealand’s 55 off 12.4 overs in the second hour.

India conceded 21 extras. New Zealand, who conceded 123 for the loss of three wickets off 25.4 overs, won by seven wickets with 146 balls to spare.

Khan bowled two wicketless overs, conceding 21. Agarkar bowled four wicketless overs, conceding 26. Nehra bowled 10 wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 37. Srinath bowled 9.4 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 35, picking up three scalps. 

New Zealand led the seven-match series 4-0.
