Dravid leads India to WIn

India made three changes to their playing eleven – Sourav Ganguly, Harbhajan Singh and Lakshmipathy Balaji made way for Dinesh Mongia, Reetinder Singh Sodhi and Ajit Agarkar. The West Indies made no changes to the eleven that last played the Indians. 

On winning the toss, Rahul Dravid, India’s stand-in skipper, inserted the West Indies. Wavell Hinds, who faced 28 balls, scored just a run. Fifty-seven balls into the match, he was caught by Mongia. Ajit Agarkar, the player of the match, broke the 34-run stand.

Chris, whose 38-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 27. Twenty-nine balls later, he was trapped (Gay)leg before wicket by Murali Kartik, who broke the eight-run stand. Marlon Samuels, who faced 28 balls, scored three. Thirteen balls later, Kartik broke the five-run stand.

Ramnaresh Sarwan, who faced 38 balls, scored 14. Fifty-three balls later, Kartik broke the 27-run stand. Powell, whose run-a-ball innings included (Ricar)do boundaries and a six, scored 29. Fifty-seven balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Virender Sehwag, who broke the 61-run partnership.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul, whose 64-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 58. His 50 – which included three boundaries – came off 54 balls in 84 minutes. Forty-two balls later, he was caught by Dravid. Agarkar broke the 48-run stand.

Carl Hooper, whose 29-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and a six, scored 38. Seventeen balls later, he was caught by Sanjay Bangar, who broke the 10-run stand. The eighth-wicket stand didn’t get off the mark. Vasbert Drakes, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. The next ball, he was dismissed by Bangar.

Pedro had no reason to be (Coll)inseventh heaven – he scored just a couple. Nine balls later, he was caught by Bangar. Agarkar broke the four-run stand. The tenth-wicket pair put on four. Ridley Jacobs, who faced 16 balls, scored nine. Seven balls later, Sehwag and Dravid ran him out.

Corey Collymore, who faced three balls, scored a couple. He was unbeaten. India conceded 18 extras. The West Indies were dismissed for 201 off 46.3 overs. Mongia, who bowled three overs, conceded 24. He was wicketless, as was Javagal Seinath, who bowled 8.3 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 28.

Sehwag, who bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceded 41. He picked up a wicket. Bangar bowled 10 overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 39, picking up two scalps. Agarkar bowled nine overs, including a maiden. He conceded 24, picking up three wickets. Kartik bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 36, picking up three wickets.

Mongia, whose 17-ball innings included a boundary, scored five. Thirty-one balls later, he was caught by Jacobs. Drakes who broke the 19-run stand. Samuels, whose 21-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 18. Fourteen balls later, he was caught by Samuels. Needless to say, Drakes was in seventh heaven.

Sehwag, whose 19-ball innings included a maiden, scored seven. Thirty-two balls later, he was caught by Gayle. Collins broke the 22-run stand. 

Yuvraj Singh, whose 64-ball innings included seven boundaries, scored 54. His 50 – which included half-a-dozen boundaries – came off 60 balls in 75 minutes. A hundred and nineteen balls later, he was caught by Powell. Collymore broke the 99-run partnership.

The fifth-wicket pair D(rav)idn’t get off the mark. The Wall, whose 82-ball innings included five boundaries, scored 58. His 50 came off 66 balls in 87 minutes. Five balls later, he was caught by Powell off the bowling of Drakes.

Sodhi, who never represented India again, faced three balls, scoring a run. Five balls later, he was caught by Jacobs. Collymore broke the one-run stand. Mohammad Kaif, whose 29-ball innings included a boundary, scored 15. Fifty-two balls later, he was caught by Powell. Collins broke the 39-run stand.

Bangar, whose 38-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 32. He was unbeaten, as was Agarkar, who faced nine balls, scoring half-a-dozen. The West Indies conceded half-a-dozen extras. India, who scored 202 for the loss of seven wickets off 46.2 overs, won by three wickets off 22 balls to spare.

Gayle and Hooper bowled four wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 28, the latter conceded 19. Samuels, who bowled nine wicketless overs, conceded 37.

Collymore, who bowled 9.2 overs, conceded 42. He picked up a couple of wickets, as did Collins, who bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 38. Drakes, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 38. He picked up three scalps.

The seven-match series was levelled 3-3.
