Dada-led India WIn series

India made a couple of changes to their playing eleven – V V S Laxman and Tinu Yohannan made way for Sachin Tendulkar and Ashish Nehra. The West Indies made no changes to the eleven that last played the Indians.

On winning the toss, Sourav Ganguly, India’s skipper, chose to bat. Virender Sehwag, whose run-a-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries, scored 32. Nine boundaries into the match, he was caught by Chris Gayle. Mervyn Dillon broke the 43-run stand.

Dinesh Mongia, whose 37-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and a six, scored 28. Sixty-nine balls later, he was caught by Gayle. Corey Collymore broke the 62-run partnership.

Ganguly, the player of the series, scored 56. His 80-ball innings included five boundaries. Forty-eight balls later, he was caught by Ramnaresh Sarwan. Dillon broke the 36-run stand. 

With Ridley Jacobs going off the field for some treatment in the 28th over, Wavell Hinds kept wicket for a while. The former returned in the 33rd over.

While on the subject of makeshift wicketkeepers, Rahul Dravid, whose 34-ball innings included a boundary, scored 20. Fifty-six balls later, he was caught by Sarwan. Carl Hooper, the West Indies’ skipper, broke the 46-run stand.

Yuvraj Singh, whose 16-ball innings included a boundary, scored 10. Twenty-seven balls later, Gayle broke the 25-run stand.

Tendulkar, the player of the series, scored 65. His 70-ball innings included three boundaries and a six. Twenty-four balls later, Dillon broke the 27-run stand.

Mohammad Kaif, whose 19-ball innings included a boundary, scored 17. Ten balls later, he was caught by Hooper. Dillon broke the nine-run stand.

The eighth-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Ajit Agarkar, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored three. A couple of balls later, he was caught by Hooper off the bowling of Dillon.

Harbhajan Singh, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored five. He was unbeaten. Zaheer Khan, who faced a couple of balls, scored four, His runs came by way of a boundary. Three balls later, he was caught by Pedro Collins. Dillon broke the six-run stand.

Nehra, who faced a couple of balls, didn’t get off the mark. Although Gayle broke the six-run stand, he had no reason to be in seventh heaven.

The West Indies conceded 20 extras. India were dismissed for 260 off 50 overs. Cuffy, who bowled nine overs, C(amer)onceded 45. He was wicketless, as was Collins, who bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 46.

Collymore and Hooper bowled eight overs each, picking up a wicket apiece. While the former conceded 42, the latter conceded 41.

Gayle, who bowled five overs, conceded 26. He picked up three wickets. Dillon bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 52, picking up five scalps.

The West Indies weren’t just fined an over for a slow over rate, but their target was revised too – they had to scored 248 off 44 overs to win.

Hinds, who faced eight balls, scored a couple. Fifteen balls into the chase, he was caught by Sehwag. Needless to say, Nehra was in seventh heaven. Gayle, who faced 10 balls, scored three. Half-a-dozen balls later, Khan broke the five-run stand.

Sarwan, whose 44-ball innings included a boundary and a six, scored 32. Ninety-five balls later, Harbhajan broke the 61-run partnership. Hooper, who faced a couple of balls, scored a run. Five balls later, he was caught by Sehwag. Agarkar broke the three-run stand. 

Brian Lara, whose 69-ball innings included a boundary, scored 36. Nineteen balls later, he was caught by Mongia. Tendulkar broke the 12-run stand.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul, whose 40-ball innings included four boundaries and a six, scored 51. Fifty-five balls later, he was caught by Ganguly. Harbhajan broke the 71-run partnership.

The seventh-wicket pair put on three. Dillon, who faced a ball, didn’t get off the mark. Three balls later, Yuvraj ran him out.

Jacobs, whose 31-ball innings included three boundaries and a six, scored 36. Thirteen balls later, he was caught by Harbhajan. Agarkar broke the 22-run stand.

The ninth-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Although his nine-ball innings included a boundary, Collins had no reason to be in seventh heaven – the next ball, he was dismissed by Agarkar.

Collymore, who faced a couple of balls, didn’t get off the mark. He was unbeaten. Although his four-ball innings included a six, Cuffy had no reason to be in seventh heaven – half-a-dozen balls later, he was caught by Agarkar. Nehra broke the seven-run stand.

India conceded 14 extras. The West Indies, who were dismissed for 191 off 36.2 overs, lost by 56 runs (under the Duckworth-Lewis method). Sehwag, who bowled four wicketless overs, conceded 21.

Tendulkar, who bowled three wicketless overs, conceded 20. He picked up a wicket, as did Khan, who bowled seven overs, including a maiden. He conceded 23.

Nehra, who bowled 5.2 overs, conceded 25. He picked up a couple of wickets, as did Harbhajan, who bowled nine overs, conceding 55. Agarkar, who bowled eight overs, conceded 33, He picked up three scalps.

The Indians won the five-match series 2-1.
